As a Japanese, I'll say this: Bento on Shinkansen is what I consider an essential part of the experience. Unfortunately if you're sensitive to smells in confined space like I am, it sucks. I end up wearing a mask regardless of covid or allergy season because I unfortunately get nauseous smelling other people's bento 😢

My greatest loves in the culinary world are Mediterranean food, french and German food, Japanese food, Thai food, Indian food, Chinese food, and Korean food, I also love Colombian food and Mexican food they make similar Spanish food in some categories but they also have there unique dishes aswell, I also like Brazilian snacks. 😍 sometimes I feel foods a great way for people to forget whatever problems political people come up with and just chill with each other appreciating the flavors love and time it took to make those dishes . Some you can share with each other and just have a good time. Next type of foods on my list I wanna try are Mongolian dishes.

While MRE there is no string you just open the bag fill water to a line. The water reacts with the heating element and just put your food in that same bag. Basicly same concept.

I love the Shinkansen so much, its comfortable, relatively cheap, fast and also incredibly on time. I was in Japan just a few days ago for 16 days so i had the rail pass for a week and it was a dream being able to take the train just like that. If it werent for the hardcore work culture, i would definitely love to live in Japan

Actually, there's more fresh/healthy foods starting to end up in gast stations now. Sure, you'll still have your chips, candies, and things like mini donuts. There are also spots in some gas stations that will have sandwiches, cups of fruit (just fruit and not like a jello fruit cup), and then just whole fruits too. And sandwiches like 6" subs, or a chicken salad sandwich. I'm from Texas, so I'm not sure about your area, but I'm seeing food options like that more and more in decent sized gas stations that will have a small shop to walk into. Perfect for road trips, still cheap, and it beats a bag of grease. I like going for a small sub, and a cup of fruit like grapes because they're easy to eat if you continue your trip, and then maybe one bag of sour Skittles for fun
In Romania before covid hit there was a joint called sushi terra I believe, they offered bento boxes and they were my absolute favourite. It even included a bowl of tom yum soup. I miss that joint a lot.
Oh! China has these boxes too. The one I came across is from a hotpot chain called Hai Di Lao. Instead of string, you're instructed to place water into a cavity with a sachet that causes an exothermic reaction. It's really fun to use.

We used to have self heating coffee and soups at grocery stores in the US. I bought the coffee a lot. I can't remember if they got rid of them because a few exploded or if a few geniuses burned themselves with it.
I mean just for you to know they are not that good(bento box never tried the heating one but I suppose it taste the same) I went 2 times in japan and they were not good if you ever go just buy at conbini or supermarket a bento and eat in the train, it looks good but everything is flat taste or even taste less

They do use a lot of plastic but it serves a few purposes that reduce water and other waste in other areas and they don’t throw it in the ocean like everyone else, either. They actually use this kind of kit for MREs so Soldiers can cook food in the field without having to start a fire and risk exposing their position.

It's a bullet train so much more luxe and when I took one from Kyoto to Tokyo it is several hours so you gotta eat sometime...
