As the story goes, Rice told Sheeran to write his own music, and Sheeran set out the next day to do just that. It wasn’t long before Sheeran was recording CDs and selling them, and he soon put together his first official EP, The Orange Room. With that accomplishment and his abiding ambition driving him, at only 14 years of age, Sheeran headed to London for the summer. Thinking he could find gigs in the big city, Sheeran left home with his guitar and a backpack full of clothes, and his musical career took flight. Once in London, Sheeran got busy recording and playing the local singer/songwriter circuit and quickly released two albums: a self-titled record in 2006 and Want Some? in 2007. He also began opening for more established acts, such as Nizlopi, the Noisettes and Jay Sean, and released another EP, You Need Me, in 2009, a year that found Sheeran playing more than 300 live shows. It wasn’t until 2010 that Sheeran made the leap to the next level in his career, and it came via online media, a route Sheeran had learned to use with great effectiveness. When a video he posted online got the attention of Example, a rapper, Sheeran was asked to go on the road with him as his opening act. One of my most fav songs from Ed Sheeran. Unbelievable. This song proves he can sing or write just about anything with so much soul & emotions.
Absolutely agree about the singing. It's a real surprise to hear the pain and bluesy growl in his voice. But, he didn't write this song.

Usłyszałam te piosenkę i bardzo mnie poruszyła, zajrzałam więc do opisu i okazało się że jest to piosenka trochę o mnie jako dziecko widziałam jak ojciec bil moja matkę, rozwidli się, po latach przyszedł deszcz ale oczyszczający.Ojciec pod koniec nie miał nikogo podjęłam decyzję że nie pójdzie do domu opieki tylko do nas,mama się zgodziła, opiekowałam się mim z mamą i moimi dziećmi,zmarł w naszym mieszkaniu w otoczeniu rodziny.Deszcz który zsyla Bóg nie zawsze osi być niszczący.

It was written by Foy Vance. An Irish man who travelled and lived in the southern states because his father was a travelling pastor. His time there definitely had a lasting effect. Foy Vance is a major talent. ❤

Ed Sheeran did indeed an excellent cover of the original song by Foy Vance.
I have listened two versions of this song and both have their own colour and are very enjoyable.
Somewhere I read a spot-on comment that I am coping below:
Ed's version has the soul of a young man, troubled in love and life.
Foy's version (which is the original one) has the pain of a man who has lost that very love and now is coping with the life.
In short:
Ed = Pop, upbeat, softer, lighter feeling.
Foy = Soul, bluesy, gritty, heavier.
It's cathartic. I can't stop listening. You just FEEL it.

Sons of anarchy was the very first TV series I've ever seen. I hardly even remember the plot - I was 15 at the time. Now, 5 years later, being pretty much different person, I can only recall the emotions that this beautiful song has had brought in me.
