If the player starts the DLC soon after it becomes available at lvl 15 these random encounters can be quite dangerous too as it seems like the mob levels are fairly static and are a mix of levels from 16 up into the 30's. Sure they're a great source of robot armor, which is technically considered better than combat armor, but the flood of random DLC encounters really makes it even more difficult to get some of the harder to get vanilla encounters, including some of the tier 4 traders.

Another missed opportunity is adding Eyebots a robot companion. A new side quest could send our Sole Survivor to hunt down not just various Eyebot parts, but also new Personality Subroutines that you can program not just your new Eyebots, but also to all your future robots. These programs could be hidden in high security terminals that the player needs to crack and piece together the app from various code fragments, (like a puzzle, if you will,) or found within the chassis of some high level Scrapbots roaming the Commonwealth (ease fix but poor game design,) or at new discoverable locations guarded by other scrapbots, raiders, and maybe Gunners. @Boskov01 Před 2 měsíci +41

I like your recommendations. However, I'd change the story of the DLC or at least add to it while also altering the Rogue Robots radiant quest just a little.
After you defeat the Mechanist (hopefully by recruiting Isabel to your side, making her your companion), she discovers that the Rust Devils have captured some of her Robobrains and reprogrammed them, using them to subvert her own junkbots. The initial villainy caused by the robobrains is still her fault but that the Rust Devils' leader, (let's call him Rusty Diablo as a placeholder) have turned her robots on her. You can either resolve the quest yourself (after either killing Isabel or telling her to let you handle it) or bring her along as a companion (her eyebot friend, Sparks, would be an essential marked follower so he can't die unless Isabel turns hostile to you, and can be a traveling radio speaker with a laser weapon so one and a half companions for the price of one). You then travel to a site where the Rust Devils are attacking (a new settlement on the west side of the map perhaps?) and help repel the RDs. You find a damaged Robobrain and bring it back to the mechanist's lair (or to Isabel) who is able to get the RD's headquarters from it. You then travel to a new location in the Commonwealth to confront the RDs and defeat Rusty Diablo (again, working title). Afterwards the number of junkbot and RD encounters in the commonwealth drops down to normal levels so that the vanilla encounters return to prominence, you get Isabel as a companion, two new settlement areas (Mechanist's Lair and a Western Settlement), and perhaps even some new mechanist themed settlement objects, not to mention all the automaton parts and such.
Isabel could also be dressed in her Mechanist costume and would speak as the Mechanist while wearing it, only her dialogue would be more heroic and friendly, as well as apologetic for her robots' actions.

Usually I end up triggering this DLC when I'm doing the Silver Shroud questline and going after Northy. He always spawns in the ruins near to the campsite. I like Automatron for how it can be integrated into BoS and Minutemen, my 2 main faction choices.
With the Minutemen I can use the Robot Bench to rebuild Sarge for the Castle plus Sentry Bot provisioners for my settlement supply lines.
For the BoS, given the proximity to the Boston Airport, I like to think the Brotherhood use the Mechanist Lair and robot construction and repair facility. Have a small garrison force there and augment it and their main forces with different bots for patrols, garrisons and the like. Since they only have so many soldiers in the Commonwealth it seems logical they would seek to supplement their forces by any means available

Just want to say I really love your Ada design. It looks like the natural evolution to her original model.
Anyway my two main gripes have always been that Ada is such a nothing character, and the random encounters being overtaken. For the former, just make her a proper companion already. If she had an affinity system it would make her stand out more from the other robots you can make, who are all factory default settings intentionally.
And while you mention Nuka-World is worse at overtaking random encounters, there's two important points. One is that Nuka-World is just a *much* bigger DLC, so it taking over some of the base game makes sense. Not to mention there's good reasoning in lore for them to be there, compared to the Robobrainless patrols of Junk Bots killing people and the Rust Devils attacking people with no tech for them to steal. But the second point is that you don't actually spend much time in the Commonwealth for the DLC. Sure there's some while you're claiming settlements for Raiders, but aside from that you spend most of the time clearing out the parks of Nuka-World. You kind of need to flood the random encounters for your time in the Commonwealth, so it feels like you're still doing the DLC even when you're not in the main worldspace of the DLC. Automaton doesn't need to do that because the entire thing is in the Commonwealth, and most of it is fairly close to each other anyway. Fix these two issues and I'd have next to no issues with the dlc honestly

I largely agree with you here, (and you're not alone, several mods exist for some of those exact fixes, such as only triggering the start quest once you listen to the distress signal and reducing the random encounters and load screens.)
On the other hand, I'm rather okay with it as it is, because not every DLC needs to be a grand sweeping adventure. Then again, I'd reorganize the Ivey fight to have you fight her, Ahab and her 'Sirens', which are a bunch of those Assualtron Succubi. Really make it a deadly finale.

For the mission you're close enough that the fight does kick off but it doesn't seem like the Rust Devil and Mechanist encounters begin until you talk to Ada afterwards. Ada will approach the player after the fight is over but it appears you can reset her to wait for the player to approach in the campsite by "downing" her before conversation begins and then leaving the area (since she'll be hostile and still considered essential after you attack her).

The takeover of random encounters is horrible. It really destroys a lot of the fun of the game's exploration when you just keep finding these annoying robot fights every minute or two. In some denser areas I was getting new robots from a new encounter before even finishing off the first encounter.
My other nitpick, minor as it is, is that many of the new eye models for the Mr Handy don't light up. This annoyed the heck out of me since I like the way the highest-tier eyes looked but they don't light up and so they look dead compared to the stock eyes.

I don't have a problem with this dlc, since it gives me an option to build the best companion in entire Fallout 4. It gives me an option to have sentry bot, or assaultron as followers. However I agree that the main factions in Fallout 4 could benefit more if you completed this dlc storyline.

I need Automatron installed for a couple of mods I use but I pretty much always avoid triggering its start because of how it ruins the random encounter tables... I don't know what the actual rate of change is, but it feels like upwards of 80-90% of all random encounters become Automatron encounters once the DLC is triggered.

Jezebel could have just joined the party as an extra to simplify things, still all the benefit of having her for the dialog and interaction of the facility w/o all the hoopla and at the end you can gain her/it as a companion. Companions in Bethesda games have always been sorely lacking in dialog and the way its implemented, Literally once you use it up there is no more unless its for moving a quest/mission along. Affinity dialog is fine but sitting down at a location "getting a bite to eat or drink at local pub" could have had more story telling... See Inigo mod for Skyrim... I only take on a companion if they are interesting to me, so if we have some down time at a settlement, that is an opportune time to sit back and chat. In Starfield, Sarah will comment on going to a specific place and it has always bothered me that once you get there, there is no interaction... story... not even a comment on being there, so why not go to an eatery and sit down to a story from your fav. Oh, and actually make a Romance believable instead of feeling like a kids crush... Piper gets jealous while Kate might like a 3som. Please, Let me know how you might fix dialog, would any one like more, less of just leave it alone.

Personally, I just wish they added more options for the robot customization. Because all I want, is the ability to scale the size of the robots without the console usage, and the ability to make securitrons. Then I could finally bring Muggy to to Fallout 4.

  • @smooth37
    @smooth37 Před 2 měsíci

If the robots could be settlements for me at the cost of resources, would have been perfect. The AI would fortify the settlement and allow you to edit to your liking. The Mechanist could monitor the robots so she's protecting life instead of taking it. The Institute becomes aware of her skills and attempt to recruit her. Your Intelligence level and which perks you have from that tree would be needed to keep her with you instead of becoming an enemy again. You should be able to gain plans from the Institute so she can update the robot AI and build better settlements.

Wonder if there's any mod that change any of this. I really did like the idea you propositions for Jezebel, as I always found her snarkyness to be... well, kinda nice.
And the point about Ada's story falling flat... I think that's something I noticed before, albeit unconsciously. Mind, she's a robot, so there probably isn't meant to be much depth to her emotions, but... she can feel angry. There is the implication she DOES have a good bit of depth... but its just never really explored.
As for the other points... yeah. A bit more PROPER overall substance would've been nice.

All of what you say is valid but Automatron is trapped in Bethesda's outdated formulae. They can't do Mass Effect companion choices because that's not how TES games work (yes I know it's FO, but it's a TES game under the hood). If they'd updated their formulae to the modern era rather than it being perpetually stuck in 2002 they could. I also think the story element of the DLC was tacked on to cut game content. The story is rushed, but the content is not so I think building Robots was originally intended to be in the base game.

My biggest problem with this DLC is the complications that arrive if you modify Currie when she’s a robot using the robot workbench from this DLC and doing so it breaks the character and has her forever stuck in robot mode. Even if she turns into a synth, I think it’s kind of stupid to have a DLC where the big selling point is modifying robots and creating robots, and then having a bug with one of your main companions of the game that breaks her forever. I legit lost about 24 hours of gameplay due to this because I didn’t notice it until I made her a synth.

I think that Bethesda doesn't possess the ability to create a decent narrative or story-driven quest...
Even the much lauded "Far Harbour", I find to be boring and underwhelming (I finally played it, I was bored...it was boring); and frankly doesn't even give you the feel or roleplaying compared to the LITERAL STARTING LOCATION of Fallout: New Vegas.
Think about the Goodsprings questline with the Powder Gangers and the Caravaner... there are so many ways in which that scenario can play out.
Siding with Goodsprings or siding with the Gangers are just the two broad aspects...and the side-ops to both of them are pretty interesting...
But there's also other, round-about options you can take to the quest...including just doing nothing! Stuff happens if you do nothing!
    ...Bethesda... Todd... Emil...
They could have learnt a thing or two about creating a game and story from Obsidian...but instead, they made a game with "base building", and figured that made it better, while incorporating NONE of the features Obsidian developed for their engine for their own side-entry...

    It just works!
Okay joking aside. It does work, but yes it could be improved. Now you focused on the power armor at Fort Hagen. Personally it is a locked shiny. If you cannot open the locked door you have to go around the back through an open office. So it is mostly an off to the side reward you can get but not have to.
That said my issue with Fort Hagen is the internal layout does not make logical sense. That power armor is locked in basically an access path for the motor pool. Then the next motor pool section has no apparent exit. So they what built APC's and tanks in place here? Take a page from the Brotherhood mission. Bunches of suits, but they are all fused. You unlock the one officer's unit that is still operable.
Now change where we are going. Instead of tracking robobrains. We are tracking affiliated sites to the central one. At those we get the department head voice recordings and teases about what was happening. Then arriving at the lair, we can use the recordings we may have gotten earlier and bypass the Mechanist's gauntlet using the base structure. Or we can run her gauntlet o'doom to reach her for the showdown.
Personally while I liked the costume I think the Mechanist should have had the Tesla armor so you have a real fight on your hands.
