Greenock Morton Football Club are one of the oldest teams in Scotland and they play their football at Cappielow Park.
They've won the Scottish Cup and currently compete in the Scottish Championship (as of 2021). In this video I'll explore their stadium and delve into their history!

Notification squad yessss lad
Cheers mate! To anyone reading this, stick the notifications on and one day you might get pinned!!!
Never missed a match home and away when I was a boy growing up in the seventies, morton had great run in Scotland's top league going on a 24 or 25 th unbeaten run and top off the league with the great Andy Ritchie leading the line and could have won league with a wee bit off luck , Celtic and old rangers being in there way at the end , sir Alex Ferguson always said when managing Aberdeen, cappielow was always difficult to get three points, not many teams in this era did , saw many games at home and a jam packed stadium when the Celtic and rangers came calling probably going on 18000 for sure , Benny Rooney had a great team in those days probably the best morton team ever in my book , still remember same team turning out week after week to play , playing attractive attacking football, Team Baines, Hayes, Holmes , Anderson, Orr , Rooney, Miller , Goldthorpe, Ritchie, Thomson , wilkie, Mcghee, Duffy ,Brown ,George Anderson picked for his country Scotland for squad for 1978 world cup, and Neily Orr making big move south to West Ham Where he had successful career with the Hammers, and sure Jim Holmes represented his country Scotland to , great attacking player in his day , the memories to many to mention will always cherish. 🤔😁👍🏴UP THE TON.
@ Neil
When I was at school in 70s everyone was talking about Charlie Brown . I never actually saw him but apparently he was going to be an all time legend .
Somehow it never happened .
Anyone know what became of him
..?
I always remember Morton winning game after game in the 1960s They had a few Danish players ! I’ve followed them ever since ! Sadly it’s a long journey up there ..........I live in Margate Kent
Blimey, I used to follow them in the early 60s with Alan McGraw scoring at will and the Danish goalie Sorensen pulling off spectacular saves.
Memories for a lifetime
MY home team, missing the matches so much!
You asked about unique views …. When I was in Sicily, home of Taormina Celtic FC.
Literally, sitting in the little stand, you’re hundreds of feet up above the Mediterranean!
Quite beautiful
Nice video, as ever, just a couple of wee things to mention.
They were officially Greenock Morton long before 1994 but were always generally known as Morton . If memory serves, there was a move to associate the town with the club more when results were read out and published in papers etc.
But even now , it’s more common to refer to the club just as Morton ( never Greenock by itself).
The winning goal in the 1922 cup final was the first direct free kick to be scored in a Scottish Cup Final.
The second was again by Morton in the 1948 final!
When we lost 5-0 to Rangers in the League Cup final we were in the second tier.
That season Morton scored over 100 goals and at one point won 23 games in a row on the way to winning the title and securing promotion.
Hope you are able to return soon and see inside 👍
In the 1964 Scottish League Cup Final against Rangers at Hampden Rangers win 5-0 Centre forward Jim Forrest scored 4 goals and his cousin scored the other goal for Rangers
Caught a Morton game on TV one friday night and got a wonderful deja vu moment. I'm a long suffering Reading fan and what i saw was a team in blue and white hoops playing in a ground creepily like Elm Park (which we left for a Lego ground 23 years ago). Have a look, particularly at the main stands.
Great to see.
Similar layout one main stand with seats and a covered terrace opposite and two open ends.
Cracking video again! In 2001 there were fan protests and marches, a big March happened from the town centre of Greenock to Cappielow with thousands of people there, and I remember there were some Dunfermline fans at the march just because they didn't want to see Morton go bust, a lot of fans were boycotting the games at that time too because of Hugh Scott and his poor running of the club, during administration St Mirren actually played a freindly at Cappielow to try and get a big crowd in the stadium to raise funds to help keep the club alive.
A couple of seasons later we were top of the second division by 12 points ahead of Airdrie, but some of our own players had been betting in the bookies on us losing the league, and we threw the 12 point lead away, then the following season lost out to Gretna then the following season won the 2nd division and were in the 1st division until the 2013/14 season when we were relegated, but we got promoted back up at the first time of asking, and then the following season we finished 4th and reached the league cum semi final and we lost 2-0 to Aberdeen.
Also the stand that was bought off of St Mirren for £50K has never been used, the flood lights have, but the stand was never put up, and it's just been sitting somewhere collecting rust, would of been better if Dumbarton across the water got that stand i think, cause then it would of at least been used a couple of times
I love the stadium tho, its home, standing in the cowshed is just something you can't beat on a match day, I'd take grounds like Cappielow or Somerset Park etc over half of the shoebox like stadiums you have elsewhere
Love your videos. Love Scottish Football. All the way across the pond in Dallas, Texas USA.
Glad you like them! Texas even got a mention in this vid haha! Thank you!!
Fair play to this lad. He's done his research.
Thank you!!
Traditional ground, and almost a window into football stadiums of the past. Another great video lad x
Yeah good point. Definitely a stadium still in the mould of years gone by! Cheers for watching!
My hometown!
That ground looks like it has so much character and the crane just tops it off 😁👍. Great watch as always
Thanks again Ben 👍
Love the videos pal. Keep em coming. Great spotlight on some cracking Scottish clubs. I went to Ardeer thistle a couple of years ago for a Junior Game, they are now west of Scotland but a cracking wee ground with a social club. Can’t beat a bit of ground hopping to see hubs of the community
Sounds like a decent day that! Cheers for watching again, more coming soon!
Fond memories of travelling to Cappielow for "home" games during Bankies last senior season
i was born in greenock , but have never lived there, i live on east coast, and yes they are one of a few clubs i support, remember a game from mid 80s when they played rangers at cappielow 3-3 and iam sure the pitch was like an ice rink, any ton fans remember that game ?
Thanks for watching!
Probably this one.

@@Beermonkey2 ye thats the game

so proud to be playing in the academy ")
Nice mate! Thanks for watching!!
Great video again Sam, you looked really frozen, that's the first time i've seen Greenock and it wasn't raining, and i never thought i'd ever hear Cappielow being described as a "Beautiful Stadium. lol Keep them coming.
Haha I was frozen in this one!! Think I can find the beauty in all stadiums!
Brought up with Morton as my neighbour. Me and the rest of the QB boys used to play in capielow every Sunday with the groundsmans blessing as long as we looked after the place. Been chased along the main road a few times aff the old bill with the full strip on. Rip big Ian, thanks for leaving the nets up.
Terrific stuff. There's loads of stories to tell of that club, oh and the crane too. Hope to see you back at Scappa again.
Thanks Andy! I'll be back for sure!
Just a word of warning, even when it’s sunny Cappielow is freezing, also your probably better standing at the game than sitting because if you do you’ll be going home with a chair stuck through your shins
Regards, a Morton fan 😀👍
Had one of the best nights ever away with Celtic when we played them in the Scottish cup about 2009! Keep the good stuff coming pal!!
Oh nice sounds good!!! More coming soon!
Not surprising at all to me.
My school Janitor was a Morton legend I think, Jimmy Holmes ring any bells for Morton supporters?
Attacking full back . Was as good as anyone in country in his day
Yes he’s on a Morton page on fb quality left back
Absolutely brilliant player.
Thank you for this nothing better than the wee Dublin end in older days 1922 woo hoo ,cup winners,
I have a vague memory that the "Greenock" was added when they qualified for Europe in the eighties. Memory not that reliable so happy to be corrected. I went there quite a bit in the eighties, always rained. Great video
Proper club. Buying a top
A ground with character not LEGO-great video with great crane shots
Really enjoyed this video. I’ve got a soft spot for Morton, was one of the first games I ever went to was at Cappielow. 1983 I’m thinking?
Love that stadium. Reminds me of our old home Elm Park...
Nothing like a fresh day in Greenock. At least it's not raining . RAE OUT
Mon Eh Ton. Great Video
Thanks!!
class video mate thanks for covering my club 👏🏴
No worries man, thanks for watching!!!
Proper stadium that!
An absolute classic!!
You’d find a lot of the old rugby stadiums intresting in Scotland not sure if it’s your thing but a lot of history when it comes to Scottish rugby
The Catman is my favourite legend of the club. Absolute beast
Keep up the good work im from greenock so it was good seeing greenock
Cool, thanks!
@@FootyAdventures no worries mate love the vids keep the work up
Good
Apart from the seats on the big terrace, looks just how it did when I was there for a friendly in 1991.
I just found that but my home team am a season ticket holder and not missed a game love the ton
Just watching Morton x Raith on BBC Scotland so Google Morton stadium and came across your video. Amazing! Fantastic ground.
Ah wicked! Thank you. I've been to a match there this season too so if you wanna take a look at the inside, here you go....

Fine video and the big Renfrewshire derby against St. Mirren. My grandad loved that game being a Buddy.
Thank you!!
Great vid as always thank you
Thanks again!
Morton I think takes its name from Morton family the Lyle fountain in Clyde square has Morton family on it
Well done kid 👍. Another great video and research that you have did. Decent club with a Decent fan base. Jim Duffy Excellent player for the club.
Thanks for watching again!!
@@FootyAdventures Your Welcome 🙂. Catch you later take care 🙂👍🍀.
@@intheheatoflisbon6733 Cheers, you too
Morton never did put use to the stand the roof they bought from St. Mirren. The roof they bought was only 9 years old and the last id heard it was gathering dust in pieces behind the Dublin end.
Ps... brave boy cutting about down that neck of the woods on your own with your camera.
Was that the roof from the cantilevered seated, end stand? The newest one?
@@jamiewilson5679 Yeah, the Love Street end. saints only upgraded that end of stadium in 2000 to seating and a roof, as the premier league requirements at that time were a minimum 10k seated stadium and unsersoil heating. We were promoted that season. The SPL a few years later then moved the goalposts with their min requirements to a 6k min seater stadium, so money wasted in the end. The 10k rule actually prevented Falkirk promotion.
9 years after the stand was upgraded, we moved to our new stadium on Greenhill Rd, just less than a mile down the road.
I think the toilets from same stand went to Aberdeen and some seating went to a Highland league team from love st

Good video mate and yes Cappielow is my spiritual home although I don’t live in the area anymore I still like to get to Cappielow 2 or 3 times a year attended my first game there around 73/74 season love the very bones of the club hopefully you can get there someday and sample a Pint in the famous Norseman bar just on the corner of Sinclair street thanks and Mon eh Ton 💙💙
Oh nice, you must have some good memories from Cappielow. Can't wait to see a game there myself one day!
@@FootyAdventures Yes some great memories we were famous for the Danish invasion in the 60s onwards 👍
First visit to Cappielow was in October 1970 . Morton v Aberdeen . Some legends played
on both sides. Martin Buchan , Joe Harper (!) , Henning Boel for
Dons and Bobby Collins and a late
substitute appearance for Joe Jordan !! Texaco Cup was played
around same time . ( WBA )
Great times !
proper old school football ground, the days when football grounds had abit off character about them, sadly being replaced with look-alike souless grounds with nicer toilets, going back to late 70s me+few mates each picked a scottish club to sort of follow and keep a eye one,i went for morton!
My mate Alexander Easdale plays for Morton and are my Scottish team
Oh nice! Tell him I say hello
I’m from greenock but I’m Celtic fan but they have a beautiful stadium
Yeah it's a classic ground!
sums up the problem with Scottish football in one sentence
A Celtic supporter not from Glasgow.....shock
Why don’t you repent and support your local team .
The TON not TUN 🙄🙄
Mon eh Ton!

Good video. Most people in Scotland don't support their local side that's why they go into administration. Most support the old firm
Oh right OK, that's a shame. Hopefully post covid more people turn up!
Years ago I went to bury v Fulham ( my club) and was having a pre match pint a local was chatting to me and was saying he was born and bred in bury his home was just over there bla bla then about 1 o'clock said I'm off to the match ,er stadium is there why so early oh I'm off to old Trafford, and that's why supporters like me shake there head , oh looked what happened to bury , I was born in Fulham support Fulham so born in Greenock support Morton surely,

This video made me choose Greenock morton as my main fm23 save gonna try and knock the old firm off there perch 😂
Beautiful stadium. Can’t beat Luton though. Kenilworth Road can’t be beaten.
i have an old Baines football card from the 1800's that has the name Greenock on it. Is there another football club in Greenock not Greenock Morton?
My friend supports Morton home and away

Theres an armature club that play on an AstroTurf about 5 mins away for cappielow and they use old bus stops as dugouts and the lining of the pitch is awful
Haha cool, I'll have to check that out one day!
@@FootyAdventures haha its not overly impressive but if you're ever back there it'll probably make you laugh
my house yassss
You loved that crane, if you had seen the cranes along that stretch in the 70s you would have loved the main crane affectionately known as "Goliath", it had the shipyards name emblazened on it and was HUGE!. The crane was Green, Scotts written across it. The shipyard was Scotts, then became Scott Lithgows when Scotts and Lithgows amalgamated.
I went to Cappielow during the 70s with my dad as we were locals. The main star player at the time was Andy Ritchie, i think it was around 76. I dont think i can put the chant for Andy Ritchie as it may be found offensive these days by the woke brigade.
If you want to go by train get off at Cartsdyke.
Brave man, walking around Greenock without a stab proof vest.
Got a like from me before I even watched it

Scotland.
Personally I hand on heart feel
That Cappielow Park is one of the worst football grounds in all of Scotland to watch football the only plus point Cappielow Park has in my personal view that it's is slap bang next to Cartsdyke Railway Station.
I would say Morton are bigger than some of the current Premier League clubs in Scotland
Hamilton Academical , Ross County, Livingston & Saint Johnstone in terms of potential fanbase size.
Had Morton been bet run as a club I do feel they could of been in
The Premier League at some point in my life time.
You asked why so many Scottish Football Clubs end up in Administration it's likely a variety of reasons.
Reason
1 : Clubs feel if they dont show some degree of level of ambition then fans will simply stop turning up in any great numbers.
2 : lack of any real proper T.V money.
3 : Paying to much in wages that they cant really afford..
4 : over ambushes owners with no clear road map on how they can progress the club off the pitch in terms of commercialy they just stumble from one bad situation to another in terms of the commercial side of things.
5 : lack of revenue is the bottomline.
In Scotland you will see lots of youing kids with Barcelona, &
Real Madrid shirts you dont even see as many youing kids with Rangers & Celtic shirt as you used to Scottish club are not giving enough reasons for youing would be fans to become fans of Scottish clubs in the first place & this is going to lead to more Scottish clubs going the way of Third Lanark & Gretna in the years ahead I worry for thr future of our domestic games clubs need to have a series look at things like ticket prices they are way to high for the standard of football we have in Scotland things like that do not encourage future fans to come along & watch club football in Scotland.
Scotland played Georgia in football
& in Rugby Union on the same Friday night just a cupple of years back now in the footbal it was a qualification match in Rugby Union it was a World Cup worm up match
There was twice as many fans at Murrayfield Stadium than there was at Hampden Park for a game that should of ment for for any Scottish person this should tell Scottish football & it's ubs all they need to know.
Scottish football needs fixed badly before its to late.
Really good points, totally agree that Scottish football needs an overhaul in terms of the running of the game. The more I look into all these great teams, the sadder it seems that Scottish football isn't bigger across the continent! Hope you're well btw!
