English here with a Scottish girlfriend who is a passionate Hibs fan and have attended games with her. Yes Premier League is years ahead of this league thanks to the money pumped in but Ive been to several SPL games that have been great to watch with a great atmosphere from the fans who are just out to enjoy that particular game on the day and not think much beyond that. Yes the league may lack competition at the very top with the Old Firm dominating and sadly I dont see that changing but it makes it all the more special when one of the other clubs beats them to a trophy. And that does happen more often than some people think.

Well said Chris, notice the English journalist didn’t come back on why he picked on Celtic rather than choosing to do a hatchet job on Man U or Newcastle. I guess he isn’t aware that football in Scotland prior to Sky BT Viaplay was successfully televised by BBC Scotland and STV both live and highlights and that if Celtic and Rangers left for EPL then the 2 Scottish based channels would very happily televise (admittedly less budget but would be to a level to fund the remaining clubs) and the other clubs would keep on as successful as now if not stronger as they’d have more Europe games than now. Agree also Rodgers may well have motives other than money which seems to be your “colleague’s “ only motivation and maybe a desire to complete what he left unfinished 1st time around and get a settled team with the core of stars staying (not disappearing off to EPL or Saudi etc) and adding a couple of upgrades each window then in year 3 making a challenge in the revised CL or maybe he just loves Celtic and is a lifelong fan like Lennon and McNeill were who managed Celtic twice stepping in at a crisis time. Thanks Chris for always standing up for Scottish football and keeping up to date watching games live rather than those who just comment off highlights and press stories like many of Talksport lot or English journalists.

Comparing Scottish football to English football is like comparing apples and oranges. We absolutely love the product we have in Scotland. Is it the best league or even considered top 10? No or course it’s not. Scottish football has two horses sure but that’s purely because they are both absolutely massive clubs with a lot of great history. When the premier league came in and they made the tv deals with sky and all the rest of it it gave the English league an astronomical amount of funds that even the best leagues in the world at the time like La Liga & Serie A couldn’t compete with. They have been for years the exact same thing that the Saudi Pro League is becoming. Everyone flocked to the Prem because they became the most competitive league in the world (with the most money for simply competing in it) and all the other leagues lost their talent to them. What’s happening now is the supporters within the prem are having all their best players snapped up by the Saudi PL like has already happened before.
In Scotland the winners of our league get I’d say maybe 5 million, compare that to getting 100 million just for finishing bottom. How can you compare that? Scotland don’t have anywhere near close to the money within the league to pay better players and spend more on transfer. Rangers and Celtic do pretty well in Europe against these odds. Yeah we can’t compete in the champions league, but Rangers were finalist in the same competition as West Ham were quarter finalists and on their way to that final put out European Giants (in terms of wealth) Leipzig and Dortmund over 2 legs. That’s mighty impressive from a tiny league with not very much revenue.
Of course we find this ignorant attitude offensive. Because it’s so easy from an English point of view to simply say we’re embarrassing or not to a high enough standard. If Rangers and Celtic got put into the English Prem with at least 3 years of equal revenue even to the relegated teams, sure we’d be able to compete, because the two clubs are some of the best supported clubs in the world. No bad for two wee teams fae wee Scotland eh?

The Premier League in England is just a millionaires' playground, a league which entices every money grabbing footballer from all over the World, whose only goal is to amass as much money as they can. The days of club loyalty is a long gone. Comparing the EPL and SPFL is nonsensical; the disparity in club revenue is huge. As Chris rightly pointed out, Man Utd spent over £400m on players and yet couldn't defeat Copengagen away from home. If Celtic and Rangers were ever invited to play in the rich league down south, and accrue the income of those clubs, then they would soon eclipse most teams in that league - and that is a distinct probability.

As a Celtic fan I love Chris Sutton and the way he is always fair-minded about Scottish football. The journalist he is talking to is just yet another patronising Englishman who ignores the fact the Premiership is the richest league in the world. He is basing Celtic's European performances on one match. A 6-0 defeat yes, but after having a player sent off after 25 minutes. And by the way it was never in a million years a sending off. We outplayed Lazio and Madrid at home and were unlucky not to win both games. Against Feyenoord we had two players sent off yet still only lost 2-0. Brendan is getting us to play in a certain style and it takes times to implement. Even as a Scotsman I usually cheer for England in big tournaments but not anymore as I am sick to death of the superior tone of their fans and press whenever Scottish football is mentioned. And if their Premiership was so utterly amazing how come they hardly ever have one of their teams win the Champions League? Man City were lucky to win it last time and Real Madrid beat THREE English teams the previous season on their way to another Champions League title. By the way the Premiership is full of foreigners. The best players aren't even English! LOL

I think Chris picked the wrong argument here to be honest. The article was questioning Brendan Rodgers' ambition for going back to Celtic. My counter question to that would be, where else could Rodgers have gone, and what would qualify as a success? Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal seem reasonably settled with their managers. The other teams that are in the hunt, Man Utd, Spurs etc, dont really have a realistic chance of winning the league. They spend fortunes and change managers every other year. I think the only options Rodgers would have had would be to go to another Leceister situation. An ambitious mid-table team who could maybe get a top 6 finish, and that would be a success, is that anything to get excited about? Or he goes to Celtic who like to develop young players, which is something Rodgers enjoys. He is going to be winning trophies, backed by an incredible support, there is one of the best rivalries in world football that generates a lot of excitement and passion, and finally, even though recent UCL results haven't been the best, both Glasgow clubs have shown that they can perform and compete well in Europe. I think that is the one area where Rodgers really wants to make his mark over the next few seasons.

    • @JamesMc2051

Believe it or not, I could see him being the next England boss.
      Reasons
      1. The Celtic board don't splash out money on transfers or, at least, they've taken in more for sales over the years than they tend to invest. Rodgers is already making comments to the press about not being backed in the transfer window. I wouldn't be surprised if things get frosty behind the scenes. I expect him to win the league but I wouldn't be surprised if he takes the next opportunity that comes his way.
      2. Southgate seems likely to move on after next summer's Euros. Where do the FA go then? Pep, Klopp, Emery, Arteta.....I doubt that any of them favour an international job over a bigger club job. What English managers are there that are doing fairly well? Howe - I doubt he'd leave that job unless sacked and he's doing pretty decent so far. So if the FA can't get an English manager with much experience at the top level and they can't attract a foreign manager already at one of the PL large clubs then they seem likely to look for a foreign manager with experience of English football (otherwise they might have another Capello situation where someone comes in and all unity goes). There's not many of them currently active in football. Rodgers is the first one that comes to my mind. Mourinho would fall out with the FA within weeks and would be divisive. Benitez - can't really see it. There are very few English managers at the highest level and very few foreign managers with much positive experience within the PL who are still active and seem likely to take the job.

That journalist is trying to use the 6-0 Athletico Madrid result, one result, as a basis for why Celtic don’t belong in the Champions League, it’s ridiculous. I think he’s forgetting we were all over them the first leg, we drew 2-2 that game, we were up first on both occasions, and the second leg one of our forwards got a red card and we played almost 75 minutes of football with 10 men, it might have been a closer result to the first game if that didn’t happen. It’s ridiculous to try and use that one result to put forward the notion that we don’t belong there. We showed in the first leg we competed, and their own manager said we were by far the hardest team they had faced in the group, so this journalists comments are nonsense. I guess Man United don’t belong in the EPL since Liverpool beat them 7-0? That’s essentially what he’s saying. It’s the height of stupidity and as a journalist it’s embarrassing haven’t such uninformed and misguided views and comments. Look at the facts, and the fact is we have got to the last 16 in the CL, beat several teams over the past decade, and showed we belong there. We were the first team in the UK to win the competition in 1967. No we haven’t done as well as we’d have liked in recent years, but we definitely belong there.

The main counter argument for me would be it is a safe job in which he can bounce back after the Leicester City job, if he so wants to manage in the prem again. That said, I like how Sutton sticks up for the Scottish game. I'm English and love the history of our game, how different teams over the years have competed and won trophies and how success is never permanent, the old saying 'every dog has it's day'. But I don't feel the need to compare to Scottish football... I can appreciate it for what it is. Scottish football still has a bit of the old school feel to it, similar to the lower leagues in England, which I like. Even out side of the Old Firm, there are many interesting rivalries (Edinburgh derby , Dundee derby , Highland derby etc). Maybe it is because my team (Sheffield United) are struggling bad in the prem right now, but I do feel it is overhyped and over-commercialized. Anyway, no lack of respect for the Scottish game from this Englishman.
