The fact that this unit existed since ww2 but no one knew about their existence until the 80s is one of the many qualities I like about SAS the ability to remain secretive. Perhaps one of the few special forces units in the world who have been able to control their media exposure. Unlike the US and Hollywood.
its not like the sas is a corrupt agency tho
Really, this speaks more to the lack of free speech than it does anything else. Very easy to keep a unit and their operations on the DL if you just punish everyone who says anything about them with death or imprisonment. Though, really, it was probably just fines and article take downs.
Before you counter me with anything at all, let me just point out, saying "Heil Hitler" to people on a street corner in Germany as an (admittedly distasteful) joke will likely get you fined, imprisoned, or deported, whichever applies best to the situation. The only European country that I've seen even maybe has genuine free speech is France, and I wouldn't really know, as I don't have any French friends. Mind, I have a lot of friends around the rest of the EU, but not France. I keep trying to fix that problem, but I usually only meet people from Paris, France, and most of those guys are assholes, or barely speak any English. The rest of Europe still uses heavy censorship in regards to what their governments are doing. That's not to say the US doesn't, but once the cat is out of the bag, they don't try to put it back in over here by imprisoning people who talk about the cat.
It did and didn't. SAS was made as a "Project" during ww2 to combat Rommels increasing and daring victories in Africa. And was after the war or shortly after closed down, but then years later re-openend again, as the tactics of warfare was ever changing. The Iranian embassy was the first time the world actually got to see how impressive some of these elite units were.
You forgot to say that the first hostage that was killed sacrificed himself by annoying the hostage takers so that they would kill him instead of an other hostage. Still a great video.
He was the only one that died the 3 that were shot non of them died so they mucked that one up

As an American, I’m comfortable enough to say that the British S.A.S. had one of the greatest uniform/gear load outs in military history in the 80’s-2000’s. Those blue coverall “boiler suits”, black vests, black boots, and black S10 gas masks with MP5 variants were just too cool. Well before the digital/Multicam and reflex laser era. The 90’s DEVGRU Navy Seal loudout was at the same level. OD Green flight suit, black boots, black vests, with US Navy aircraft carrier deck crew helmets, MP5’s variants, XM-177 carbines, M14 mods, and M60’s.

Yep, John McAleese
yay
"SAS is unknown to the general public"? The SAS is well-known way before the Operation Nimrod but its just that Nimrod brought out a new light to them.
The SAS was well known to the general public as a sabotuer and commando forces for the British Military and their escapades in Northern Africa, sabotaging Italian and German airfield during WWII was very well known by everyone. However, counter terrorism wasn't in their minds at all till the Munich Hostage situation sprang up which highlighted that the Europeans were actually lacking a proper CT (Counter-terrorist) force and with Britain having such a powerful Commando force, why not make them into a CT force also. With the creation of the GSG-9 and training by them in conducting CT operations, they took the skill and real-life experience they had from the Lufthansa flight crisis and developed into what we know today.
don't forget the french GIGN and their airline hijack operation
