Tory glee at Lorna Slater 'abandoned...as half baked scheme dissected' over Deposit Return Scheme

- The Scottish Conservatives launched a motion calling for an independent review of the Deposit Return Scheme.
The deposit return scheme, will see shoppers charged an additional 20p on every drink they buy in either a glass or plastic bottle or in a can, comes into force from August 16, with producers having until the end of February to sign up to the scheme - something they have to do if they wish to sell their products in Scotland.
Under the Scottish Government proposals, the 20p deposit on cans and bottles will be returned when customers take empty containers back, with Ms Slater saying it would increase recycling rates for such items to 90%.
Wrapping up the debate a grinning Liam Kerr mentioned Lorna Slater had had a 'torrid afternoon for this minister. Buffeted from all sides as her rudderless, ambiguous, half-baked scheme has been dissected and dismantled.'

I didn't think it was possible to be more incompetent than useless Yousef but the Scottish government keep on giving. 🤡🤡😂😂
Wonder if there's a Deposit Return scheme for Lorna Slater ???
What would they do with her. There's not much that's of any use.
@@taffyddu She could clean out the used bottles before they are returned?
Larry has a lot to answer for.
NO returns, sorry.
When will the greens slither of back under the rock they came from .
Oh dear opposition skewers the SNP/Greens AGAIN !!! 😂😂😂
just have to switch to tap water, but scared the snp will fuxk that up as well
Too late
What a disaster!
She wants her name in the lights. It's easy for a dim light to shine in a dark place like the Green party.
She would fit so well back in her own country sitting next to Trudeau
The look on Slater’s face was brilliant!😂
Unemployable anywhere else. Mmmn why not make her a Minister in the Scottish Governmen?. Says it all. What a shower. No wonder our First Minister abandoned the sinking ship.
Liam is using the recent data yet the minister in charge doesn’t even know that 🙄 This could be a good scheme but that would mean actual work which she is incapable of.
Back to Canada.
Slater won’t listen as she is clueless as is the SNP/Green coalition
It doesn't matter what amendments they make to this scheme, it'll never be better than being able to put bottles in your own recycling bin at home, which is what I currently do!
What about all the other glass jars bottles, no mention. Like you say what could be easier than putting it in a glass recycle bin. If you have to travel to return your bottles is that causing more co2 driving?
@@laviniajohnson9210 exactly. So if I continue to recycle in the most efficient way, using my own bin, I'll be taxed 20p per item for the privilege. All to persuade those who aren't currently doing so, to do so. Which they probably won't. Its madness.
@laviniajohnson9210 I agree. It's what our household does. And if we are out we bring such rubbish back with us. The UK has cameras everywhere. If people are seen throwing rubbish down they can be identified. Fines should be raised to £500. And if the offenders are under 18 the fines should fall on the parents. I remember once asking a youth of 16 to pick up some rubbish he had dropped a few yards from a bin. I got sworn at. These people need dealt with. I remember also being in Germany as long ago as the early 70s. I was in a park and was amazed at how clean it was. This was hardly surprising as parents could be seen telling very young children to deposit wrappers from ice creams in bins. It was heartwarming to see the kids toddle over to bins perhaps 100 metres away.
Green msp…. Out her comfort zone. DONT ASK ME QUESTIONS.
The U.K. scheme will never get off the ground by 2025 because of the efforts required to build such an infrastructure. What is obviously the massive issue here if the SNP not greens demands to build a scheme unlike other successful ones. Slater inherited a disastrous scheme . The SNP have created the legislation that the greens are trying to deliver. The lack of willingness to listen to professionals or except reason if the downfall where ambition exceeds knowledge or capacity of politicians abilities. The visited many countries on jollies to see successful DRS , they hv been working on it since long before 2019 yet in true SNP style under the leadership of Nicola ( how fast can I run) Mckrankie it’s yet another disastrous piece of legislation delivered.
People are under pressure with there grocery bills this will increase it even more madness
Even Kate Forbes says that she would stop this scheme! Why is lazy Lorna even there?
That'll fall on deaf ears!!

an excellent speech.
Thats an " ive failed but wont admit it face " just like the rest of them , conspicuous by their absence .
She is (like most of them) absolutely and totally unconsciously incompetent.
The lost puppy look just won't save her
SNP/Greens/Alba/Scottish Independence goodbye! :)
Let me get this right if businesses don't sign up to this they can't sell drinks and alcohol in Scotland is this right?,if so this is blackmail is it not well I'll be doing what I've done from the beginning, putting all glass bottles in the recycling bin up the road stuff their 20p or 50p extra charges.
Those with sufficient life experience, will remember corona bottles 10p return
Lorna Slater ' Queen of the flounce'
One person is well prepared and one isn't, perhaps it's time to stop trying to do projects 'better than anyone else' and just try making them work.
The long term solution is to educate and condition the general public to be disciplined in recycling because they want to recycle. The responsibility should be placed on the consumer, not the producer.
Her general philosophy to be green is flawed. If she wants Scotland to be more green, it shouldn’t be via bribing consumers and financially penalising producers. It doesn’t fix the real problem. The real problem is a lack of education and desire of individuals to take responsibility for their own consumption.
If a day comes that consumers are no longer financially rewarded for recycling, then they won’t recycle. Individuals need to be conditioned to recycle because they understand it’s the right thing to do, not because they financially incentivised to do it.

13th May 2020 the Scottish parliament voted to introduce a deposit return scheme.
In polls over 70% of the public are in favour of the bottle return scheme in Scotland.
The deposits on bottles not returned will help with any costs. Also money generated by recycling metal, glass, and plastic and savings in having to pickup less litter.
The Scottish companies have had plenty of time to prepare.
The introduction of the bottle return scheme was delayed from April 2021to July 2022 then to August 2023 due to the pandemic.
There are 45 countries and territories around the world with deposit return schemes.
Austria, Barbados, Latvia, Denmark, Figi, Malta, Palau, Lithuania,Taiwan, Norway, Iceland, Israel, Netherlands, Finland, Israel, Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland and Turkey etc.
Canada- British Columbia, Quebec, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario etc.
USA- California, Connecticut, Hawaii, New York etc.
Australia- all of Australia will have a bottle return scheme once Victoria introduced one in 2023.
Poland and Scotland are introducing bottle return schemes in 2023.
In a statement to the Independent in February 2017 Coca Cola announced its support for a deposit return program in Scotland. Coca Cola said" we have embarked on a major review of our sustainable packaging strategy to understand what role we can play in unlocking the full potential of a circular economy ".

Cuts down on plastic entering the environment.
Saves energy and natural resources.
