- During the Rural Affairs and Island Committee yesterday Lorna Slater was corrected twice as she explained draft legislation about shooting deer in Scotland.
Firstly she was told by Edward Mountain, that when she said that closed deer season was to allow antler growth, it was to let the deer recover after The Rut, as they would be inpoor shape.
Secondly Mr Mountain said: 'Minister with the greatest of respect, you've just stated another untruth, because in Scotland you are allowed with the male closed seasons you are shooting male deer during The Rut process, but afterward you're giving them a chance to recover. So it's a pity for me and really disappointing that you've made that comment because that's the 2nd thing that proves there is a lack of knowledge on how to manage deer'.

I work in deer management and it is frankly astonishing how wrong this woman is. It is also clear that she is reading from notes prepared by others who are either complicit in her ill informed ideas or are lazy and just prepare a brief which will suit her political ends. She doesn't even know when the rut is!
Unfortunately it is yet another example of Slater and her counterparts using the sledgehammer approach in the name of progressive liberalism. They did it with gender reform, they did it with DRS and they did it with marine protection. All momentously expensive, divisive and poorly advised. Scotland should have open season on Green MSP's. Their numbers have vastly exceeded the need for them, they don't have to challenge at any time for their roles, have thick skins (to match their heads) and are feather bedded all year round by weak presiding officers.

Regretfully the majority of MSPs have neither the knowledge or intellect to do either - but the biggest issue is that they don't have the will to do so even if their IQ reached 100 without needing to be expressed in binary.

Then factor in the PR element and you had the distinct possibility that a minority government would have to get into bed with a minority party, and here we are. Whenever I hear Slater or the wee ginger speaking I cringe, but when she talks about “my team” I feel the need to commit an atrocity. I’m really not someone who would naturally leap to the defence of an incompetent minister, like Lorna Slater. But her embarrassing mistakes, when questioned by somebody, even she should know is active in deer management, point towards incompetent Civil servants. We don’t expect ministers to be naturally knowledgeable about all issues in their portfolios but we do expect them to be properly briefed about Q&As with full background information, so that they can speak confidently and authoritative, during Parliamentary business. Either she didn’t read her brief properly or her Civil servants were happy for her to be hung out to dry through inadequate or misleading information. It is simply insulting to the committee to have a minister appear, when she is clueless about her brief, and unable therefore to discuss serious animal welfare issues.
She shouldn't be attempting to introduce new laws if she doesn't understand the subject matter and/or the consequences - completely out of her depth yet again!

The subject heading to this video is incorrect. She’s not lying. She just doesn’t have a clue what she’s talking about. Just like everything else she gets to make policy on! I accept this in itself is not wholly unusual for politicians. The difference here however, is that she (& the SNP/Green coalition in general) doesn’t (or won’t) listen or engage properly with those people who do know what they are talking about.
