He wasn't just any other comedian, he was a *philosopher,* actor, author and social critic and a very smart man. Born and raised as a *New Yorker,* and was known for his black comedy and reflections on politics, English language, psychology, religion and various taboo subjects. He and his *"7 dirty words"* comedy skit(which was a pretty funny and relatable one and recommended) were central to the 1978 U.S. Supreme court case F.C.C. v Pacifica Foundation, in which a 5-4 decision affirmed the government's power to regulate incident material on the public airwaves. And widely regarded as one of the most important and influential American stand-up comics *OF ALL TIME,* and not to mention he dubbed by the newspaper to be *"the Dean of Counter culture comedians".*
The guy said a lot of facts and yet was funny about it at the same time, told it like it is and wasn't afraid to speak his own mind and was a true comedic legend.

George always knows and conveys the unvarnished truth. He has many comedy sets that are funnier, but he always delivers in a way everyone can relate to, and he's right virtually all the time. He will make you think, and when you're done thinking about it, you'll agree he knows the truth. This was probably from the 90's, and he died in 2008. But everything he says is usually truer today than back when he first said it.

Got to work him a couple of times back in the day, would've been early 80s. Really nice guy, no pretensions, no crazy, I'm too cool requirements. His only prop was a bar stool, deli tray and some cold beverages in the dressing room. Give him the stage call count downs, walk him up the wing, cue house lights, and out he goes. No fuss. Class act.
Im a stagehand myself and we call people like him true professionals. They know when to get onstage, they know when to leave, and all they're worried about is doing their jobs and putting on a good show. Its great to hear thats how Carlin was and i'm not surprised. Bill Burr is the same.
@@zacharyhumphries1707 If you're IATSE all hale. I was in the concert biz late 70s through the 80s, worked for one the biggest promoters in country at the time, did production coordination. Worked with IATSE, IBEW all the time. Great bunch. Get together, lay out a battle plan to pull it off & it just gets done, no fuss. Got to chat with some pretty nice people, Billy Joel, Springsteen, Bob Weir, Grateful Dead. Robert Fleischman, Journey, almost blew my car speakers once Van Halen was a piece of work, loved their music but, man, were they hard row to hoe. Brown M&Ms and all. LOL
Anyway, have fun, stay outa the way of runaway road cases. Had 9' Steinway in its' case run a guy into a wall once, almost dislocated his shoulder. He survived. Those were the days.
@@bintheredonethat Not IATSE. I work overhire as a loader for 'em occasionally, but Im a mercenary. I work for whoever shoots me a gig first and/or pays the most. I do have a great relationship with 'em though and most of the cardholders are awesome. Ours is an interesting job which attracts interesting people, but yes it can also be pretty dangerous. Luckily i've yet to be seriously injured and even better haven't injured another. And yes, I totally watch for runaway road-cases and also set-carts being pushed by some over eager newb who can't see and doesn't know what they're doing. We all started somewhere but newbies are scary.

In your opinion, how good was he.
George never referred to himself as a comedian. He said that "I'm just a writer who performs his own material". If you notice, outside of his early days, he'd make a little joke here and there for the sake of entertainment, but for the most part he just said truthful things in a highly-worded way. He loved words, words were his passion. He was a man with a message that just so happened to make people laugh because of how good he was at delivering it.
e: He also didn't fear backlash, he said what most were afraid to say in public, and did it relentlessly. He was fearless with regards to what he would say, he was the Eminem of standup. I was 14 years old when he died in '08, and it sucked, because he was my first hero.
I was 17 when he died. I had seen a few of his bits before, but the marathon of all his specials that aired the day after his death made me lifelong fan.

George was a philosopher to us die hard George Carlin fans. His brand of comedy is timeless and will stand on it's own for years and years perhaps centuries to come. Don't look for George to come to your city any time soon, he died in 2008. He was and is my all time favorite comedian-philosopher of all. Noone can say the things that he says the same way or any where close to it because he told the truth and we die hard G.C. fans know it and he made his audiences do something they hadn't done for some time, think. He was definitely a one of a kind.

I love Carlin. I have watched him since I was a young kid. I'm lucky I got to see him live in Atlantic City a year or 2 before he passed away. Also, as for this bit, the earth will heal itself, look at how the environment and wildlife flourished during the height of COVID where rivers and bodies of water started to clean themselves and wildlife returned to places they haven't been in YEARS. That said, I do think recycling and making as little mess as possible is important. I think this special was Jammin' In New York from 1992. I could be wrong on that though.
And why did it heal itself, (inasmuch as it did)? Reduced human activity. Which kind of runs counter to the bit. But the point, as you seem to understand, was the hypocrisy of using the Earth as the victim, when being eco-friendly is really just making a better habitat for humans.
When George Carlin was around, a lot (not all, but a lot) of comics didn't write their own material, and he did. He originally viewed himself as a performer who wrote his own material, and as he matured, he changed his view to a writer who performed his own material.
I saw George twice back in the late seventies, early eighties at a small dinner theater. I've never laughed so hard in my life.

Around 1970, he made a serious change in his comedic approach, and became an anti-establishment comedian, and his comedy albums appealed to a whole new generation of fans. In the late-1970s, George Carlin began appearing in a series of HBO Comedy Concerts that continued on until the year of his death in 2008. George Carlin made many appearances on network television on variety shows and late-night talk shows.
George was definitely a thinking person's comedian. I was lucky enough to see him perform live. Please dive into much more of his stuff, you won't be disappointed!

Shiloh: George Carlin was perhaps America's most popular comedian in the 80s and 90s. I watched his entire 50-year career in real-time. What this video is, is an outtake from his dozen or so HBO 1-hour specials he did once a year. Some of his videos made us laugh harder than others. Some were silly (e.g., Death Penalty, Losing Your Stuff, or Our Similarities, which you should react to). Some were serious (It's a Big Club).
George Carlin goes back to the 1960s in his early career. In the 70s he was arrested several times for some of his routines when he started to go against the "status-quo". During the late 80s and early 90s during his HBO specials he redefined himself and his comedy by leaving nothing on the table. He doesn't just make you laugh, he also makes you think about what he's saying at the same time. He even co-starred in a few movies over the years. He's not just one of the greatests, he's a Legend! R.I.P. George Carlin!

George was billed as a comedian. Bull feathers. He was a philosopher. BIG time thinker!!! George was amazingly smart. Keep watching his work... It will serve you well. He makes us think and view things differently.

Was an amazing comedian and philosopher. I have seen him since Rollin and Martin's Laugh-In. Then HBO specials and in person. Seeing him live was something special. You knew he was going to talk about a subject that would offend someone, but still leave you laughing. Always the unadulterated truth.
If you check out any of the other clips available by him, watch them. You will enjoy them! Like most, you may disagree with him on some topics, but you will still enjoy it.
Everything he brought up in shows/routines during the eighties, ninties and early 2000's still applies as if it was today.

One of the last interviews with George impressed me more than his "Bits"- the interviewer told him the different "roles" that people thought he played- philosopher - a lover of wisdom, Professor- Professors are usually experts in their field and teachers of the highest rank, Truth Sayer, Satirist, Wise Man and Just a "Funny Guy" - Then he asked George why he was here, with us in this life, and his reply was "I'm just here for the Entertainment - and it is a most entertaining life." I agree with George, if you step back and simply observe; life is rather hysterically Funny, sometimes Sadly funny, sometimes just absurdly funny, sometimes just funny because funny is better than sad.
One thing for sure about George, he will make you THINK and sometimes, just the thinking is funny!
I'm 79 years old and to this day, If I feel sorrow/sad or just plain need the spiritual Lift that a good laugh always gives, I simply get out a "George Carlin Bit" and renew my ability to laugh and realize that life is rather absurd.
Enjoy George and always remember, Laughter is good, it's healthy, and damn it's fun!

George has always said that he's not trying to get people to think. He's letting people know that he's thinking. "Saving the Planet" was a part of a comedic sketch that I believe was his best. Another good one in this concert is, "Traveling on the Airlines." That will get your laughter going for sure.
George has some great bits. Definitely a top comedian and writer.
Carlin isn't stand-up. It's the blood and guts of intellectual curiosity from the heavens.

Indeed my dear, this wasn't his first show.... He started doing comedy in 1959. 😁 His act was totally different in the beginning but changed 180 degrees towards more high brow philosophical humor during the Hippie era - early 70'ties. Glad you're getting to know George the Great... Not a comedian who said profound things, but a philosopher who happened to be extremely funny.

I love watching someone watch Carlin for the first time. He is a comedian just in his later years had a way of making reality funny. Please watch more of him. My favorite of his bits is called "trillions of Dave's" or millions I forget but it's soooooooo good :p

I love how everyone automatically thinks of COVID-19 when George mentions viruses, but we have had MUCH more deadly and horrific things in the past. Heck, the Black Plague is thawing out in Antarctica right now...
I'm just wondering how no one realizes he's talking about HIV when he mentions the immune system and spreading sexually. Even if most people don't recognize Human Immunodeficiency Virus as the full name of the pathogen, the effect and primary mode of transfer paint a clear picture on their own.

I admire George’s view of not worrying about the things he mentioned, and I’m all for that way of thinking, but ticks and Lyme disease is something everybody should absolutely be very worried about and be made aware of. That is nothing to screw with.

I'm currently reading a book called Meditations, it's a collection of writings from Marcus Aurelius who was a stoic and a Roman emperor. Carlin and Marcus both had similar views on the fragility of life. You're only here for a little while, maybe we can (not to sound like a hippy) just be good to one another for a little bit before we're gone.

I enjoy watching reactions, and this was the first time I came across one of yours, Shiloh. Very well done! And George is definitely someone whose material is worth taking a deep dive into. As many others have noted, he was a philosopher as well as a comedian. More comedian early in his career, but the wisdom was always there...then later in life, he had zero fucks left to give and it was more philosophical but still hilarious.
Also, as others have already noted, his prescience was incredible. How some of his points ring truer now than they did when he came up with them just go to show how right he was...on damn near everything, lol.
That aside, had to give you props and a subscription. I prefer reactors who at the least have a little something of substance to say about what they've watched/listened to, and I thought your closing thoughts were great. You didn't draw it out, but you also didn't just say "well yeah, so I watched it and it was cool/funny/etc." Hope to see you do really well with this and reach a broad and big audience. ✊

He was one of the most intelligent comedians I've ever seen or heard. My top 3 most intelligent comedians are: George Carlin, Bill Burr, and Gallagher. If you like "slap-stick", satire and comedy that will make you think, Gallagher is the man. Check out his early stuff. If you were very brave, you would do George Carlin on Religion.

Bill Hicks was miles above Bill Burr or Gallagher as fare as intelligent and insightful comedians go. Hicks was easily on par with Carlin.

George Carlin was part comedian and part prophet.
Carlin was a philosopher more than a comedian.
Carlin was phenomenal. While a comedian, his wit was second to none and the man was incredibly intelligent. Every single one of his shows and acts are still relevant today. The man could twist the English language and shred politicians. He was incredible and society as a whole is worse off without him. I saw him live in the early 90s and that show still remains with me. The man was literally a genius and just as open about his problems as he was about being honest with the world's problems.
We Gen Xers grew up to George. Phenomenal.
