I was a Navy submariner for 8 years. This is the most accurate Sub movie, based on how the crew acts.
I feel like every Navy ship has at least one crewman who acts just like one character or another from this movie.
Not sure about current time, but this would be very light-hearted compared to older days and the haz...er...games that were played.
The late Harry Dean Stanton, who played Howard, the Stingray's engineer, was a Navy vet in WWII, served on diesel subs, like the Stingray, and served during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. He was close friends with Jack Nicolson, best man at Nicolson's wedding in 1962. He was also in Kurt Russell's Escape from New York (1981), Cool Hand Luke (1967), The Godfather: Part II (1974), Red Dawn (1984), the Green Mile (1999), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), Marvel's The Avengers (2012), Private Bejamin (1980), Christine (1983), Pretty in Pink (1986), Rango (2011), and Ridley Scott's Alien(1979), among many other films. He passed away in 2017, at age 91.
I’m a former Navy DoD ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) Electrical Engineer and former active duty Military Aviator who served in the 90’s. I love this movie because it reminds me of how we were back in the day before everyone became too sensitive and offended by nearly everything.
Consistently cited by US Submariners as one of the most realistic portrayals of Submarine Life ever put on film.
That's actually awesome to know haha
Oh damn really? Thats dope lol
Every reaction to Nitro is better than the last... "He's been shocked so much he's frank sinatra? ...... Oh he's not okay." XD
Answering some of your sub questions:
1. They didn't allow women on subs until about 2011. Now they have mixed crews.
2. Ball caps are generally allowed when wearing a working uniform. Each command has their own ballcap.
3. Smoking was banned on subs in 2010. The air onboard is circulated and cleaned. We joke that we breathe recycled farts.
4. 500ft is very deep. Especially for a sub that big. People think subs go super deep but that's only the research ones.
5. Sound travels for 10s or 100's of miles in water. That's why subs have to be so silent. Sonar can pick up people talking on other boats if they're loud enough.
6.Seawolf class subs are probably the most advanced subs we'll ever see. The newer ones are Virginia Class subs. They're quieter and way cheaper, but nowhere near as capable. LA Class subs are older now.
Fun fact. There was a guy on my boat that had a penis tattoo. It said "Pirate".
This is all incredible. Thank you for sharing. Props to you for being brave enough to go in an actual sub. That's wild!
@@burnbearscomedy thanks for the content. It's fun :)
You called it a boat instead of a ship, that's how I know you know what you're talking about :)
I was a sub vol but ended up getting sent to surface, was really disappointed about that.
@@chaoticignorant483 Oh wow! I don't know if I ever met someone who went sub to surface. Once they have you they really don't like letting you go lol
Like, *nobody* is reacting to this movie, so glad I found y'all.
Yea um the golf joke I used to believe the same things lol. But I work at a steel plant with steel workers. These are all working class guys in a dangerous field of work. And you'd be surprised on how many of them play golf!!! I'm not joking either. It's actually a surprising number. lol
yeah. I know guys from the plant that I work that love to golf. Most of them aren't really that competitive or takes it that seriously, it is just a way that they like to relax. Go out on the course for a few hours, with some buddies, making small talk and just being away from everything for a little while. At least that's what they tell me.
Fun fact: hydrophones can pick up the heartbeat of a blue whale from a MILE away!
Yeah, this is the most accurate submarine movie ever made.
My dad, uncle and I went golfing. We didn't caddies and we finished 9 holes inside of two hours. My dad and I had a deal. He'd do the driving because I couldn't and I'd do the putting because my dad couldn't putt to save his life. Uncle gave me a dirty look when I sank a 20 foot putt and he double bogeyed on the green.
LOL I'm 68, retired, and on a fixed income. I can play 18 holes in around 4 1/2 to 5 hours (yes, I'm slow) . . .
YES!!!! Time for one of my favorites. As far as pressure goes, human bodies can easily withstand 1000+ Feet of pressure while in the water, with the record deepest scuba dive being 332.35m (1,090ft). But a tin can wwII hull with all those things like propellers, and exhaust and other holes in it, made it less then perfectly sealed. Even modern subs dont go as deep as you think, usually capping out around 2000 feet with some exceptions with specifically designed submarines which also happen to be the most hush hush.
Dude nice, coming in clutch with the sub knowledge. Katie and I are a collectors of facts so we love this. Thank you!!
The 90's was a great era for movies.
Lt. Lake is Jenny Shepard from NCIS.
And Mary Sampsonite from Dumb and Dumber
Thanks for reacting to it and for battling copyright all day. I wasn't too sure how you'd go with the 90's humor. I got my sense of humor from the movies my parents watched, thus we had to sit through. 90's movies shaped who I am today 🤣 Katie you seem to have a knack for pointing out how gay character are. First Damodar & Lord Profions obvious relationship (I don't know how I missed that) and now fishnet singlet guy.😂 I just remember him looking tough...it must have been a 90's thing 🤣
Hahaha Yes, Katie can smell the gays from a mile away lmao
Thank you for suggesting the Movie, btw. We had a good time!
@@burnbearscomedy I'm glad 😊
Just wanted to let you know, yes horses get cramps. Most mammalian animals can get muscle spasms/cramps. Dogs, cats, horses.
My wife and I both love this move and watch it at least once a year.
I believe that there are currently only 2-3 submarines where women are able to serve. There are stricter regulations than say the army. Smart girls, if you ask me!
42:52 They're called "dress whites." 🤣
Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it.
Regarding golf:
As an upper middle class brat who still plays golf on a semi-regular basis, it's actually quite fun XD Also, I never used a caddy before, I prefer to carry my clubs and bag myself - it's a decent workout over time XD
Also, regarding Howard, the old machinist who showed up in that weird shirt in the ending: IIRC, he was retired due to his age, but was brought back into active service for this wargame because they needed someone who knew how to properly work with diesel engines.
I think fairly recently they as of 2010 they lifted the ban on women in submarines and roughly 600 have been on sub duty as of 2023
Callahan Auto Parts. Sandusky, Ohio. Tommy Boy just sold half a million brake pads.
One of the best comedy's of all time.
Tommy Boy FTW
YAAAASSSS!
TOMMY BOY!
Hell yes!
If they think fashion from the 90's was bad its good they didn't take in the 70's, they would still be suffering PTSD.
33:43 And Abestos poisoning.
I already really liked the movie, but getting to watch a Wednesday and Pugsly type set of people (compliment, not insult) react to it makes me feel like I'm watching it for the first time all over again.
It's submorbin' time, i guess
Hey I'm new love the reactions one of my favorite movies I don't know if you have or not but I would recommend you guys watch McHale's Navy the movie not TV show unless you want to
14:44 crush dept balao class can go 400 ft gato class can go 300 ft
Recent disasters of Indonesian naval submarine and mini sub imploded cause of crush depth
Damn. Idk why we both thought that wasn't that deep, but thinking about it it's so much pressure
So a firing solution on a sub is: the target is going 40 miles an hour, we're going 30 miles an hour, the target is here, so given its size, it could hit here, if the target's radar picks up the missile, they could change direction this or that way. Basically a computer does a lot of math and tells the missile where to go and what to hit, and how accurately it will do it, and in more advanced ones, it can correct its course if it misses.
Also im so sorry about the 3hr editing you have to do. Or did. Idk, time is weird man
Hahaha Thank you! We had no idea!
Your take on golf is WAAAY off btw. So caddies is only for the pros. And many of your average joes golf. Im poor as shit and used to golf before my back problems. Not every golfer is country club elitists.
Their take on pretty much everything is way off. It's these 2 younger generations only get things that are on a phone or computer. You can see how uncomfortable they are with any kind of manliness. The entire film is them trying to feminize the strongest guy on the sub. Please dont recommend anymore movies pre 2010 to them. I think they need to stick to rom coms where the most testosterone is the stay at home husband that wears sweatpants and the only time you see him is when he's cooking something.
No we got married or not and birthed the next Gen. We were-are crude and don't care.
More movie commentary and less snark would be a good idea!!!
Y’all hysterical.
Water pressure doubles every 30 feet. Also the depth gage is in the middle of the sub. So at times the bow or stern of the ship may be under double or more pressure than the control room in the middle.
No, it doesn’t double every 30 feet; every 30 feet you add one atmosphere of pressure.
Honestly, saying HIV/AIDS wiped out all the "tastemakers" in the 1980s is QUITE the offensive thing to say (seeing as how it was often called "the Gay Plague" in the media), especially to LGBTQIA+ people like myself just discovering your channel.
And the shirt is a reference to Tommy Boy. Who doesn't love the comedic duo of David Spade and the late, great Chris Farley?
Katie here. Copy that, and genuinely apologize. The intention was to mock 90's-2000's fashion but the fact that it wasn't read that way means I fucked up. Thanks for calling me out, I'll be more aware about my wording.
@@burnbearscomedy Ah, I see what you mean. Tbh I do it myself but since its my first time seeing you two I didn't quite catch on at first. My apologies.
@@MrTomSpencer It's all good! Thank you for being understanding
@@burnbearscomedy Absolutely! Keep up the great work and I greatly appreciate your taking time out to reply. I smashed the subscribe button! 😁
I believe they were talking about the 60's Hippies rainbow type style of fashion...and I think she was just repeating what she heard someone else say...so...
Get of the stage!
These 2 reactors talk a lot of nonsense.
Sorry, you people talk too much about nothing.
They can't show too much of the movie otherwise it will get flagged for copyright and removed...so calm down
@@KingOfGamesss You're not even talking about the movie
