I absolutely Love Sigourney Weavers line "Lets get out of here before one of those things kills Guy" Its like her character is scared but she thinks if she transposes the danger onto Guy, like in the show, then the worst that might happen is Guy gets killed. He cant be both a "disposable extra" and cared about by Sigourney Weavers character at the same time. She's leading the charge to get out of there, and despite the fact Guy is standing right behind her she doesn't even look at him, she's far more concerned about the "minors" and her own safety.
She's transposing all the danger of the the disposable star trek extras trope onto Guy that he had been talking about, almost willing it to pan out that way if it they do attack The humour is how disposable Guy is and how shallow she is in that moment of danger.

The best story to come out of Galaxy Quest actually involves Star Trek Actors. Patrick Stewart didnt want to see it at first, he thought from what had been put out there that it was going to make fun of Star Trek, in a harsh way. Well one night Johnathan Frakes calls up stewart and says "You HAVE to see this movie on a weekend in a packed theatre". So Stewart went out the next weekend to watch the movie. According to him no one in the theatre laughed as hard or loud as he did, he absolutely LOVES the film. He sees it as a tribute and homage to Star Trek and to what has kept Trek going all these years, the Fans.

One thing that few people notice is that Jason actually refers to Guy as "Fleegman" at one point on the desert planet. Since Guy never got around to actually _telling_ them his last name this time around, this implies that Jason heard it way back when they were filming episode 81 and has remembered it ever since, even though Guy's role was a one-off and he got killed off 5 minutes into the episode. This is the really interesting history about Tony Shaloub's character being the way that he is, quoted by Shaloub.
"That was an interesting situation, too. I had first gone in to meet the director for the role of Guy Fleegman, Sam Rockwell’s part. Crewman #6. That was the initial meeting. And then I found out a little while later that Sam was going to do that, and that was great. And then Dean called me up and said, “We would like you to do this guy Fred Kwan.” And I said, “Well, no, that’s an Asian guy. I can’t play an Asian guy! Why don’t you get an Asian guy? There’s a lot of guys out there who could knock this out of the park!” He said, “No, no, no, we think you should do this thing.” And I said [Sighs.] “Well, I can’t play an Asian guy. I won’t play an Asian guy. But I will play a guy who plays an Asian guy.”
So Dean said to me, “Why don’t you take a look at the pilot for Kung Fu?” You know, the David Carradine show? “Because that was a guy who wasn’t an Asian guy playing an Asian guy.” This got really convoluted. [Laughs.] So I watched David Carradine, and then we found out that there was this rumor-I don’t think it was a rumor, I think it was a legend-that David Carradine just smoked a lot of weed on that show. That was the thing. That’s how he was able to channel that kind of Zen, unflappable character. So we decided, “Well, maybe that’s what happened to Fred, too: He just became this kind of burnout.” And then we just kind of rewrote it as we went along. Dean and the writers, we just kind of made it up as we went along, based on that idea: that he’d smoked an enormous amount of pot.

Except it would have bad writing, it would be chalked full of liberal propaganda and marxist identity politics. All actors would be recast with black gay female immigrant paraplegics just so they can say they did it. Yes, Officer Chen was stoned. This was filmed as an R rated movie and the studio changed their minds. The scene with the joint was cut. Also, the idea of Tony Shaloub playing a guy named Chen was poking fun at David Carridine in Kung Fu.

My good man, I think you will find they were poking fun at Chekov from the original Star Trek show. He was supposed to be Russian, but obviously wasn't. "Nuclear Wessels" is a famous phrase that he used that is not at all Russian. Yeah, yeah.. it's the future and accents change over time and that's always the canonical reason but there's no way that was a conscious choice when it was filmed. Sticks out like a sore thumb.
The thing that you are thinking about is that "Tony Shaloub" got inspiration for acting stoned from David Carridine's performance in "kung fu: the legend continues", but it didn't have anything to do with the race-swap, that was the scriptwriter.

@@Towelgravy I've read specificly that they were trying to spoof the whole obviously not Asian thing and that Kung Fu was part of that. And the internet is always right.... 🙄

@@curtismartin2866 True, that means we are both right then anyways lol. To me, this is a spoof of science fiction.. so I look to the science fiction shows to see what they spoofed. I don't see any connection between "Galaxy quest" and "kung fu", other than this.. so I wouldn't have compared the two in any way except for the actor talking about it after.

"Well fuck that" is my alltime favorite Sigourney Weaver moment. It could only be topped if she had had gotten her wish to film the final confrontation from Alien while completely nude. She did get the opportunity for that during A Map of the World.

Can not really choose a favourite from the good guys, though Mathesar is brilliant. My favourite of the movie may well be Robin Sachs as General Sarris. A distinguished actor in his own right both in the UK & US though you could never recognise him as Sarris. He also had played in the Star Trek TV series - THOUGH of course he may well come into second place behind Alan Rickman, so brilliant in everything he did. Have admired him since I first noticed him in Truly, Madly, Deeply. Worth watching, like "Ghost" but the English version. Both made in 1990

Robin, who passed away some years ago, is also best known for playing devious warlock Ethan Rayne on some episodes of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer".

I saw this in the theater with my brother. We had low expectations going in and it was top 5 of all time when it was over. Incredible cast, great script, and the VFX still hold up.

Apparantly, I think I've heard, that Tim Allen needed a moment after filming his apology to Mathizar, and Alan Rickman quipped at him something along the lines of "Oh, Tim has discovered acting!"

Each character has a wonderful story arc, from the Commander to Malthazar, to the nerdy kids, and all of the crew. Everyone is given a great story. Galaxy Quest is one of my favorite Star Trek movies, and millions of Trekkies agree. I've been to a few Trek and Sci-Fi conventions, and I love how this movie is a dedication to the fandoms that make these franchises great, and why they've lasted decades. At the time of release, there was a mockumentary about the original series with all of the actors from this playing their actor characters talking about the show. You can find it on CZcams, and it is hilarious. There was talk of a sequel or reboot, but Alan Rickman died before they could get it together, so the idea of a follow up was dropped.
