  • Today, I want to share some footage showing the current state of our grass verges and roundabouts post-maintenance by Surrey Highways Contractors.
Sadly, the work done is not up to par, with cuttings left everywhere and damage done to our cherished wildflower roundabout. This footage was shot in Deepcut, but I am under no doubt we will see similar in Mytchett and Frimley Green also. Ill be taking a ride around later today to inspect.
As your locally elected representative, I am deeply embarrassed by this and sincerely apologise for the state of our community’s grass verges. Despite strong efforts by myself and councillors from all over Surrey (Cross-Party) last year to prevent this sub-standard work, it has happened again.
I am actively addressing this issue with the senior officers and Cabinet Members responsible, expressing my dissatisfaction and demanding higher standards.
As always I will keep you all updated on the developments and try to ensure we achieve the improvements needed.
Thank you for your understanding and support as we work through this together.

How about not paying the contractor until he has fixed that bodged job? If I deliver a job and do not deliver the agreed result, I am not getting paid the agreed amount of money or not getting paid at all. I did a job for the Surrey CC a few years back, and even when I delivered the result as agreed it took the CC far longer to pay me than agreed. If you say it is your responsibility, Paul, stop that money and let them fix it before they get paid. Next time they might do it right the first time. I think, since they got away with it last time, they just didn’t care. I believe it is time to set an example not to let them get away with this.

Thanks Axel. I think I know the job you are referring to. When I say I have responsibility locally, I mean political responsibility. That means if people are unhappy with this situation, they can express that at the ballot box. However, I do not have operational responsibility. All I can do from that point of view is put the officers at the council under pressure to get the contractors to perform. As with all contractors, there will be a contract and that is all the council can use to hold them to account. I believe there are some serious conversations ongoing with the contractors. However, I am aware there is not exactly lots of companies out there that can do this work on the scale demanded which is part of the problem.
