So glad you are starting with the studio version. Bonham's beat with the amazing ghost notes on the snare during the chorus is by itself enough to deem this song totally badass, then when you add that absolutely nasty guitar tone Page uses during the chorus, John Paul Jones' stop and start keyboard work and of course Plant's haunting vocals, man just too much, and that is just the chorus we're talking about! All of the subtlety and interplay within the band is captured so amazingly in the studio version. That said, the original unedited version from MSG 1973, Song Remains the Same, OMG, earthmoving.

I usually prefer reactors do studio versions of songs, especially Led Zeppelin, since their live versions are often very different from the studio versions. That being said, I totally agree with you on this song. That live version of No Quarter from The Song Remains the Same is awesome. So if you do a separate reaction to that version, you'll hear this song in a totally different way that I think you'll love. This song comes alive in that version.

Led Zeppelin has been covered by many. There was a whole album created by multiple groups covering different Zeppelin tunes. The album was called Encomium. Bands like Hootie and the Blowfish, Stone Temple Pilots, 4 Non Blondes, and many others. check them out. Another awesome cover other than the Tool cover, is a cover of Stairway to Heaven by Heart. The entire song from the first note of the intro takes you to that place. First you're in the home of those waiting for the return. Then the piano, synth, & guitar just sweep you off to the blizzard and rocky cliffs that have stopped the travelers, and you are there with them driving themselves through the falling, piling, blowing sleet and snow. You can feel the conditions waft between icy wet freezing snow, to the ironically colder but softer snow squalls and horizontal streams of fine blowing crystals. I see wolf and bear carrying nothing but their fur, tooth, & claw vs mankind having to carry everything they need, skin wearing the hides of the wolf & bear, all their guts burning their fuel of flesh, winning only every icy breath they struggle for and frozen step they fall upon.

It's interesting to me that Led Zeppelin is, in my opinion, a love letter to African American music. It makes me happy that you found them.

That's because the album versions of all of their songs were a "snapshot" of where they were about 1/2 way thru their evolution. You really need to think of the "life" of their song as this: birth = the song concept and rehearsal; puberty = the album release; adulthood = live versions over time. There songs always grew and evolved live.....the album versions are just where the song was at the time they decided to record it, before it matured.

The irony was it is so much easier to hear the work in the digital era. People need to hear this on a high dollar system or with good headphones.

True that, I'm watching this on the Mac........but if I want to listen to it, I'll crank up my 70's Pioneer and pull out the vinyl!

I gotta mention, you should also check out the 1973 MSG live version of No Quarter. The guitar solo on that is among Jimmy's best solos ever, as Yenlard 66 also mentioned. But there are several videos out there which aren't complete. Might be best to get it straight from Song Remains the Same live album.

You won't change your mind. Once someone says Led Zeppelin is their favorite group, that's it. Have you reacted to D'yer Mak'er? I'm going to have to check.
