Sakurai didn't even mention tripping once, carefully moved around that topic lol.
Man, in this video you can just see Sakurai with a face of "too much work" every time he mentions that he himself had to do a bunch of stuff.
Maybe Sakurai just manages the developers, he doesn't actually master or play the games b/c he considers them party games and anyone who plays them too long as weird nerds. I just wished they had "competitive items" (crates show what item they will spawn before hand, pokeballs show which pokemon will come out before hand, items will show seconds before they spawn where they will spawn).
I just wish sakurai a good day. he made great games. :)

@@AlexRodriguez-gb9ezThat's far from correct, it's very apparent he plays the game, he literally has to as the lead developer. If he didn't like his work he wouldn't be making videos about it now would he? Sakurai is at heart a nerd himself, that's what being a developer is
i dont think he moved around it. thats your narrative... the online is bad in all nintendo titles so it doesnt have to be his fault he is a game designer and director after all. too busy is a good reason especially in game developement

I agree that smash brawl online had to be bad in order for the scene to grow to what it was. However, ults online being bad actively made me quit playing the game because I felt that there was no way for me to improve (none of my friends played the game)
Yeah this is major cope from coney which he admits, the FGC has had great net code for years and it hasn't hurt offline, in fact if anything it has grown since the start of the pandemic
my nearest weekly local is 2 hours away from me and everyone there is better than me so i end up going 1-2 or 0-2 without learning much every time, and without online to practice it just isnt fun anymorw
Like i get it at the time Brawl released because practically no fighting game had good online in 2008, it was pretty much in diapers in console. But nowadays? Online makes up like 70% of the experience (90% if your singleplayer is trash), even casual players hop onto online. Not having a good online causes games to be dead on arrival (Granblue, Jojo ASB, BBTAG, etc...) and the only reason it didn't happen to Smash is because it's Smash. The idea that a good netcode makes offline play irrelevant is absurd, as no matter how good the online is, offline play will always be seen as the better option due to the in person factor that is hard to replicate online. I'll never get justifying making things objectively worse because of a casual audience, it doesn't make sense, especially in a case where if it was better, they'd like it even more.
Yeah, I quit Ultimate's online entirely early on. Now I barely play it at all since it's just going to be me fighting computers.
Ultimate online made me think the game is genuinely horrible, even if I know it's not that bad. I don't really have fond memories of this game at all
For the record, Kid Icarus: Uprising's English localization is fantastic and feels nothing like a "Japanese" script because Sakurai gave the localizer 100% freedom, so nothing will be lost on English players. Though, if you're left-handed...don't play it.

As a left handed person, I begrudgingly made it through that game and its still my favorite for the 3DS
Instead it feels like an episode of Teen Titans or something so arguably worse than a Japanese script.

Just saying, Sakurai's videos aren't "falling off", that's just the hype train moving onto other things. He's made it very clear that the channel is about game design and helping new game developers, not just random Smash players checking out because they want more Smash content.

the reason online play was at the forefront of his ideas for brawl because that's an INCREDIBLY big deal. online play would require that specific things are handled serverside and that there's server-client communication. that is fundamental to the framework of the game. the reason slippi is so impressive is because they had to take a game that was client only and completely revamp all the code from the ground up to support online play.

Honestly Coney is right about the online being bad honestly benefitted the community more consequently due to the early social media space still not being where it is today.
He explained tripping in a round about way by saying Brawl was a much more casual game.
If anything the fact they were so aware of players getting tendonitis is the biggest flag to making the games more casual overall.
when did people report getting tendonitis from playing melee? i didn't pay attention to nintendo relates news from melee to brawl's announcement, but i know in the 2010s competitive players came out saying they got fucked up hands from playing the game at such a high level.
and yeah tripping is so obviously an excuse to make the game a more level playing field. coney was joking about the items in mario kart, but that element of random is what makes mario kart a fun party game and brawl a frustrating competitive game. the intention was always to make it so a wider, casual audience didnt feel like they were getting shit on for playing.
@@tokuyou3811 There's a difference though; items in Mario Kart are a constant, and something you can play around and can even plan into your gameplan, even when its the infamous blue shell being thrown your way. Tripping meanwhile happens out of nowhere and you can't really play around it, and doesn't even serve as a comeback mechanic. Even in casual play, I have yet to meet 1 person that's played Brawl that actually liked the inclusion of tripping

Sakurai is on a whole other plane of existence talking about game design and his reasoning for the decisions he made, meanwhile Coney is just doing everything possible to validate his own headcanon about Brawl.
I love-hate how Twitter constantly takes screenshots from Sakurai videos out of context, and the original person posting it has zero comprehension of what was being said in the first place, so their caption just completely misrepresents it.
I feel like what you said about online being trash benefitting the offline scene meshes really well with what Sakurai was actually saying here.

Brawl isn't my favorite game personally, but I'll stand by the opinoin that it's the best smash game for casuals. The team did a fantastic job making the series more accessible, and later titles can take some hints from what Brawl did.
I agree. I never even knew about broken characters like meta knight because I thought his moveset was boring to play. Literally just a fun casual time with friends was all it ever was for us

Tripping was my fault. I told Sakurai that I had a lot of fun playing Smash while on LSD and he wanted to incorporate that into the game. There was an error in communication, though, and he misunderstood the meaning of "tripping" in this context.

GUYS pls help get this comment to the top because I really want Coney to know - Smash brawl was kinda 100% forced onto Sakurai. It was said in an interview that Nintendo had announced a new smash game with wifi capabilities at E3 before Sakurai even knew about it, and then there was a semi-hostile discussion where they said if he didn't make a new game for the Wii, they would simply just take Melee and port it and try and shove in a wifi mode WITHOUT him. So Sakurai was forced to either take on the project, or be sidelined from the series as a whole while they ruined Melee with a bad port (he was extremally proud of Melee at the time) All in all Sakurai didn't really want to make Brawl in the first place and on top of that they didn't have the time they needed because Nintendo just sprung it on him on a whim. He probably didn't mention all that because he probably just doesn't want to shed Nintendo in a bad light.

As much as I love Uprising, for Coney I think he'd only enjoy it while streaming with chat interacting but there's so much dialogue and information, it's an awful stream game.
Afaik Uprising is mostly a game who relies heavily on ridiculous interactions between characters. If you liked Palutena's guidance in Ultimate and 4 (I certainly did) then you'll like what Urprising has to offer. If not, then you're out of luck.

Will say Kid Icarus Uprising is an actually fun game. I had my doubts initially but it was actually really good. It's actually a big reason why smash 4 looks the way it does. Downside is that it's a 3ds game and you play it with a weird control scheme, so I don't think you'd enjoy it very much coney

Sakurai said he wanted to give every character a moment in the spotlight...but Jigglypuff, Toon Link, and Wolf were not only not in Subspace, but you couldn't unlock them till AFTER you beaten Subspace.

I feel like Coney and others forget that Mario kart, just like smash, can have items turned off. Can't win with a bullet bill in those matchups. There's no rubber banding between players Either.
Mario Kart is better competitively with items turned on. The risk management is what makes it interesting and allows you to engage with other players. Pretty dry without them

5:38 i was playing friendlies at a Comic-Con tournament (so it wasn’t even an “official” tournament) and this villager was so committed to camping, that when I got a stock lead I stopped approaching and we literally came to a standstill and we just sat there w our characters like 🧍for 3+ minutes even tho he was alr down a stock. We were playing winner-stays w a small group so everybody saw too smh shameless
I will say slippi ranked gets me tilted so easily and so hard (I know do the same cause I play ics), but locals are just such a fun experience

I miss brawl so much.
While I definitely think smash having bad online did help the local scene out back then, I think now it’s a hindrance. Mainly since now with the internet, it’s so much easier to meet and talk to people online(example being discord). Smash having bad online now does more to hinder it now imo than help the scene grow. I have a friend who has started to grind other fighting games because he has been training with the people on discord and finds the online play more enjoyable. This would never happen with smash
the hardest part of playing kirby online in ultimate is matching with another kirby because its always taunt lobby. The true test: pick between your self esteem or 8 minutes of your life
