  • The Birth of Dionysus: The Twice Born God
A tale of how the Greek God Dionysus, the lord of Wine and laughter.
One of the most outlandish gestations in mythology. It shows the power of Hera as much as the birth of the god of revelries.
Living Mythology is an attempt to entertain, relax and educate all in the one place. We are trying to forge narratives so that people can experience the religions and mythologies of the world as they were meant to be. Not as dry academic monoliths, but as living breathing tales and parables as experienced by the peoples who worshipped these beings, in an attempt to make sense of their own lives and the world around them.
This channel is in its infancy, so we hope to improve and develop it as we gain more experience.
All of the tales are taken from very conflicting traditions across many centuries, so there will be many a moment when decisions need to be made to create a more cohesive narrative. If we present something that seems to be in contrast to details, rest assured we have researched many forms of the traditions and come to the conclusions we have done to form the videos.
There will NEVER be total agreement on any of these narratives due to the history and differing ways they developed over the centuries.
These videos are for entertainment and an easy gateway to the subject. If you wish more academic details then please direct your attention to the wide source material and others who perform those types of academic video essays.

Dionysus is commonly known for his aspect of revelry but they forget about his aspect of maddness

So true friend! Thought we would mention it, it's a key aspect of course - but there is always more tales to come to show more of this side to the god!

I once called Dionysus "the god of sex, drugs, and rock and roll." My classics teacher didn't like that very much.

Really? That's incredibly tragic, I made a similar comment in a paper for a lit class where I was comparing some themes in Thomas Mann's work to the dialogues of Plato (specifically the draw of youth, and how the old wise can be beguiled by longing for it) and the prof loved it. It's not only a reasonable notion, it actually captures much of the god and shows how relevant the idea of Dyonysus has remained across time and language.

I remember pulling a speech right out of my ass as I took my place behind a podium in English class in 9th grade, from the perspective of Dionysus trying to run for president.
I wrote nothing, prepared nothing, but I charmed my way into winning the presidency by way of the class voting for me as I had promised minimal interference in their lives, unlike the curmudgeons and warmongers who came before and after me 😂
All I had seen and known of him was that he loved drinking, loved the ladies, and sometimes was depicted with goat legs. Man I wish I had seen this all those years ago, I'd have gotten every vote in that mock election!
Great work! I absolutely loved this.

Hera had a very nasty streak in her when it came to Zeus's dalliances, and she did the same to Heracles as you know. Thanks for this tale I never knew Dionysus's origin story. As ever greetings from Kilkenny.
