  • It seems like we've been seeing the 2D-3D Hybrid style a lot more in Animation lately, not only with Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse but also in the Bad Guys and the upcoming Puss in Boots Movie! Today, I talk a little bit about it, hope y'all enjoy as always!

    I think with the new style of animation, it actually allows each movie to diversify and be more distinct.
    Into the Spider-Verse has a more superhero comic book artstyle like appearance, The Bad Guys has a slight epic "Western" look to it and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish looks like fairytale illustrations, especially ones that are PAINTED.
    So the animators can just run wild since they do not need to bind themselves by the rules of photorealism and allow for zanier and more over-the-top styles.

      It’s probably going to be noticeably overused at some point. Hopefully studios take in the fact that this animation worked for the films because of the universe it was in or story it was telling and not because people liked the animation. That’s the whole reason things like the trilogy of skylanders and disney infinity died off fast. The system of characters on a pedestal got so overused that it exhausted everyone’s interest in it.

      Low-frame rate makes for good fight scenes and character expression. You look at Miles from into Spider-verse and the low frame rate really helps sell the idea that he's a less experienced Spider-Man but also sells the fact that he's a different Spider-Man entirely, someone who can blossom if given the opportunity. Likewise, look at Puss in Boots and beginning fight between Puss and the giant. The low-frame rate makes Puss's run much more energetic and it looks so good. I hope Disney and Pixar find a way to use low-frame rate because if done correctly, it enhances character, action, background, etc.

    don't wanna ruin this for you, but there were older exaples than Paperman that used a 3d-2d hybrid. Even yet, there were other animations that used this 3d-2d hybrid style AND the low framerate thing! The one i have in mind is a series called "Angelo Rules", which started it's runtime in 2010! what's more, is this art style was also prevelent in Hollywood movies too before Spiderverse! one of the exaples is The Peanuts Movie from 2015. It looks like it's a typical case of "largely diffrent people having the same idea, just some years before the other" as my theory is that Phil Lord and Chris Miller, directors of Spiderverse, took their experience from The Lego Movie and had the same idea as these other cartoonists/filmmakers, add 2d elements to a CGi cartoon. So i wouldn't say Spiderverse invented it, more like popularized it.

    Disney and Pixar will have to step up and conform somewhat to this, even if they wish to avoid it. Photo-realistic graphics has a limitation as there's always something better down the line and then it'll just look dated.
    It also severely limits the ways that a story can be told since the more realistic something looks the more our brains will protest when it moves differently from how something that looks realistic would. Photo-realistic graphics hit the Uncanny Valley extremely fast, and with a stylized style, it can also visually support the narrative.
    For example, the style chosen is noir. The design sees every character being lanky and the shadows are all deep and long. That would look so dope in animation. In a live-action movie, it would just look silly. An example of this is the live-action version of Battle Angel Alita. I know it's a rather decent anime adaptation and all that I can remember are those stupid-looking anime eyes that was CGI'ed in.

    Really wanted to like Into the Spider-Verse but couldn't finish it because of the awful frame rate in Miles Morales' animation. How can lower frame rates and choppy animation be considered a major leap forward in artistic style? Anime does it because it's cheaper, and when anime studios want to show off and splurge they make the animation MORE fluid. Not less! I feel like i'm taking crazy pills.

    • @Chillreviewer
      @Chillreviewer  Před rokem +7

      Low-frame rate can make for good fight scenes and character expression. You look at Miles in into Spider-verse and the low frame rate really helps sell the idea that he's a less experienced Spider-Man but also sells the fact that he's a different Spider-Man entirely, in contrast to the more experienced spider-people, someone who can blossom if given the opportunity. Likewise, look at Puss in Boots in the beginning fight between Puss and the giant. The low-frame rate makes Puss's run much more energetic, the fight seems feel less weighed down by physics and more wild and on-acid (that's the intent at least) low-frame rate if done correctly, can enhances character, action, background, etc. Anyways some people like it some don't but everyone's entitled to their opinions. 👍🏾

      @@Chillreviewer Thank you for letting me have an opinion, i guess? Look, everything you said might be true, but it feels like something some film analyst said and everyone is regurgitating it. I doubt many sat in the cinema thinking "Ah yes, this really helps sell the idea that he's a less experienced Spider-Man and the fact that he's a different Spider-Man entirely."
      If low frame-rates makes for good action cinema, perhaps the idea would have been even more emphasised if Spider-Man had been swinging around at 1f/s?
      And btw, nothing in your answer was a direct response to what i wrote in my first post.

      @@monsterlair I agree with you 100 percent. The amount of people praising spider verse is insane and I feel like I'm the only one with a negative opinion on this style of animation. Every says the same "it's art" argument but by that logic, art is subjective and about perspective, therefore it is valid for me to say that this style is not visually appealing to me. I also don't understand why you can just slap "art" next to someone and people will flock to it like it's the second coming of Christ. I don't understand why people like this style for having a lack of frames, which seems so backwards - I've never looked at an online game when the server lags and been like "oh wow look how beautiful that looks!"

      @BuizelCream Před rokem +5

      @@evanbritcher3941 This is where I have to barge in, needing to separate from what the movie experience is to the gaming experience.
      For sure, we cannot have the choppy frames in our games! Uh... have you ever bothered playing Scarlet & Violet? But for movies, it's completely different. We were never meant to interact with the movies we watch. We're just spectators, audiences.
      As to why I love this Spiderverse animation style, I won't create an echo-chamber of repeating the same thing the producers said, but this is how I'll say what my impression is:
      When they decide to drop frame rates, it is for sure out of artistic intent, not primarily to save production costs. How? "Choppier animation" tends to stick key poses a lot better in our brain. Because they halt in our screens a little longer, it makes them seem impacting. And what happens when those impacting key poses is all the movement we see play out for our animated object in our screen? It makes the scenes play out way more striking and bolder!
      Smoother animation often unintentionally washes out the supposed striking poses due to blur effects and the continuous movement of frames that is also grabbing our attention to go "WOW! Look how smooth that is!", unless if the character has intentionally been animated to literally pause their pose on-screen for dramatic effect.
      I would also theorize that the movie producers behind Spiderverse understand the appeal behind limited key frames in animation done in a TV series with limited budget, and they took advantage of it in their film regardless if it seems unnecessary. This is what's called artistic liberty. They know the rules in order to bend them.
      This is why people loved the Spiderverse animation first BEFORE they collectively remember it as a sensation. And that animation style cannot become a sensation if it was first being hated upon 1st viewing.
      I would also rather argue that the reason why TV series excel better with "choppier animation" is simply due to expectations. When TV series suddenly go smooth we don't see often, that instantly becomes a sensation. But in the movies, higher frame rate is what's expected here, and the play on frame rates is one of the ways Spiderverse wowed the world.
      So, when we analyzing these comparisons carefully, animations done either "choppy" or " smooth" exists technically as something that is purely neutral when you think about it. It is our expectations placed upon TV series and movies that colors what makes either one of these techniques stands out when they make its mark. If we watch Spiderverse not knowing if it was a TV series or a movie, for sure the "choppy animation" won't stir our minds too much that we're seeing novelty.
      But we're just talking about animation here. Not yet the artstyle. And that's a whole diffetent topic to expound at length in a different place and time.
      Hope this reply is a new insightful take to you in some shape or form.
