  • DreamWorks has experienced a period of resurgence lately, and its led to many people looking back and appreciating the sheer variety present in their catalogue. I felt like giving my thoughts on it as well as reviewing Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and The Bad Guys after getting a bunch of requests to do so.

    Edit May 2024: Genuinely sick of people saying this aged poorly somehow when it quite literally didn’t. This video’s entire point is that Dreamworks is not on some sort of comeback and is the same as they’ve always been. You are clearly not watching this video and I can tell by looking at the retention time in my analytics. Shut up.

      Lightyear was supposed to be an epic adventure with a fairly well-known and well-loved character, and it turned out to be progressive crap.
      Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, being a continuation of a spinoff from 10 years ago while destroying familiar characters, additionally with an 'annoying supporting character' turned out to be a perfectly balanced film where every character was interesting and Perrito was funny.

    If DreamWorks is this serious in making a fifth Shrek film, I hope they bring in the people who made Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Not just for the animation but also for the writing as well. They gave Puss in Boots the most compelling character arc. Imagine the possibilities they can have for Shrek himself.

    • @matthewmazzatto8003
      @matthewmazzatto8003 Před rokem +45

      That's going to be the biggest hurdle for Shrek 5: how do you further expand on Shrek himself? Shrek 1, 2, and 4 all did a good job illustrating how much he's come to value the people around him, so you'd have to take the character in a new direction. But what should that direction be? Shrek is nowhere near as brash and egotistical as Puss was, and he becomes pretty open and chill by the end of Shrek 4. I just don't know where you can take his character.

      We'll see what approach they take soon enough I suppose.

    • @memecliparchives2254
      @memecliparchives2254 Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@matthewmazzatto8003 A few things come to mind:
      Since Puss by the end of the Last Wish has become this legend, a significant amount of time has passed which means Shrek is more or less in the position of giving advice to Puss since the latter has now focused on settling a new life with Kitty and Perrito.
      Besides his own kids potentially growing up and maybe one or two if not all of them desired to be human or any potential conflict, there could be the issue of addressing his true origins as an ogre. Heck, you can even bring back the ogres in the Forever After alternate timeline and see where they are now. After all, it sort of confirmed that there are other ogres except they just live in almost complete isolation of one another.
      Which brings us to a more deeper connection: Shrek's parents. A part of Shrek lore implied if not confirmed that Shrek was almost eaten as a baby by his father because he might have been an unworthy offspring (sort of like how Spartans throw away unwanted infants because they might be unhealthy or a curse or something). Heck, I won't be surprised or it would be cool that in the alternate timeline in Forever After where Shrek did not exist, his father might as well have eaten him there.
      In addition, there's also Donkey who might have an origin story worth of exploring.
      On a final note, we can even extend Shrek into a 6th film. But in this one, they should go with the risk of Shrek growing really old same with Fiona, bring back the aspect of mortality and inevitability of death and of course, the aspect of growing older and possibly dying. I mean if there will be a Puss in Boots 3, that is also the inevitable fate that is waiting for Puss.

      Dreamworks was pretty much MIA after Kung Fu Panda 3 released. I know HTTYD3 was a hit in 2019, but that was their lone good win during that 6-year timeframe. They had some decent flicks with Captain Underpants and The Bad Guys and Abominable was close to working, but the rest of their output for those 6 years was rough. Two Trolls jukebox musicals for toddlers, two weird Boss Baby movies, and the absolute worst film they've ever released in Spirit Untamed. Yeah, they still occasionally had a watchable movie, but it felt like the Dreamworks of Old was gone.
      Then Puss in Boots the Last Wish took over the internet. If they can get through 2023 in good shape and really hone in on what made PiB:tLW work for their future works, then maybe we'll truly see a Dreamworks resurgence.

    Honestly I think the reason why I always preferred dreamworks to Disney (and to some extent Pixar) Is they are willing to take risks sometimes for the worse and sometimes for the better. I’d rather have a company that’s so wild with their output of films than one that never really changes and keeps pushing films that are getting more and more dull.

    I fell in total love with The Bad Guys after watching it just _once,_ and it instantly became my favorite DreamWorks movie (prior to The Bad Guys, I didn’t have a favorite-the closest would probably be Kung Fu Panda). A combination of the unique art style, over-the-top action scenes, enjoyably simple story and memorable characters (the chemistry between Mr. Wolf and Diane being my personal standout) all come together to give The Bad Guys a strong charm I haven’t felt in any other recent movie of the past few years.
    What’s especially wild to me is that it’s an adaptation of a book series; the movie and the books, though they share the same name, are entirely different. If you didn’t know any better you’d probably think Diane was a movie-original character, because her counterpart in the book series isn’t even named Diane (her name in the book series is Ellen and she looks very different). I was surprised to find that Ms. Tarantula was _Mr. Tarantula_ in the book series. I really appreciate DreamWorks going the extra mile to basically rewrite the world and characters of The Bad Guys similar to what a series reboot would do, yet still keeping things similar enough to where you can draw comparisons between the books and the movie.
    The Bad Guys is super great, almost unexpectedly so. Even though all eyes are on Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, I personally put The Bad Guys on the highest pedestal in DreamWorks’ library.

    Most of the criticism regarding the Bad Guys was regarding the toilet humor and I agree that it’s kind of annoying. However, the humor specifically the butt meteor joke was a gag from the books so I’m willing to be more lenient when it comes to looking at the humor.
    My main problem was regarding the plot twists the first was regarding Marmalade. The problem with the twist for me wasn’t that it’s predictable like what you said the twist doesn’t change Marmalade’s character and pre-twist there were signs of him having ulterior motives. The problem was regarding the plan where it felt unnecessary for him to disguise himself as the old lady especially since how was Marmalade suppose to know that Wolf would prevent him from tripping.
    The second twists that bothered me was Snake double-crossing Marmalade. The problem regarding this twist was why would Marmalade trust someone who was a member of the group he just betrayed.
    Despite the insane plot twists, I enjoyed the movie specifically the heist at the very beginning and the one where Marmalade was trying to use the gang to save the guinea pigs.

    A lot of people seem to be upset that Dreamworks isn’t keeping the spiderverse style for Ruby Gilman but it makes complete sense why. The spiderverse style really only gets a chance to truly shine in action scenes, and Puss in Boots, Bad Guys, and Spiderverse all contain many action sequences throughout the movie. Judging from Ruby Gilman, it’s a lot less action oriented, not saying there won’t be any but a lot less than those movies, which means the spiderverse style doesn’t get a chance to shine. Plus, we don’t want this new style to run dry so soon so I’m happy they changed it up for this movie

    Puss in boots was amazing; it's one of those movies that felt shorter than what it actually was. I was never bored and the pacing was fantastic along with the humor and character work; *especially* for a 90 min movie. The bar has been raised for animated storytelling in "kids" movies. Now with that being said I'm not expecting any DreamWorks movies (or other family friendly animated studios movies) in the near future to be on par with it, though teenage kraken does seem pretty fun so I'll probably give that a shot.
    Tbh at some point I thought I was getting too old for animated movies (was proven wrong by rewatching classics and even something more recent like spider-verse) but only realized I just need consistently solid humor that *isn't* cringe and/or forced, likable fun characters that have at least a *bit* of depth to them, well executed nuanced themes while having something to say and a plot that doesn't fucking *drag.*

    the *wonderful* battle with the giant in Puss In Boots The Last Wish was actually a recycled deleted scene from the 1st movie! i rewatched it one time just for the heck of it, and watched all the bonus features too. It was a very fleshed out storyboard with many art style changes (showing a LOT of different animators helped get everything just right), with key points having been carried over to the 2nd movie too, such as the bell knocking out the giant.

    Absolutely fantastic video! For me, I've always loved Dreamworks because, like you said, you never quite know what you're going to expect - but you always know it's, at the very least, going to be fun and relatively interesting. Hell, even Boss Baby had that "yes, I'm the baby Jesus" joke that made me cackle in the theatre.
    I've also always admire that with Dreamworks, while their stories may range from cliche to deep, its characters are always just so incredibly endearing. Over the years as I grew from a kid to adult, I got incredibly attached to the Monsters from MvA, the cast of Megamind and, most recently, the Bad Guys. I've also had friends and online acquaintances get attached to characters like the Penguins of Madagascar or the Kung Fu Panda gang. There's a reason why so many of their movies end up getting TV shows and specials later on, they just do such a great job of making such lovable characters that you just wanna see them go on more adventures and interact with each other.
