Yesssss, it's probably not like that but it feels like some guys are working on the canon stuff and character development. And then they tell the rest to come up with filler episode based on absurd concepts...and they mess it up. The filler episodes are killing the show

it really feels like these writers are capable of making amazing episodes but keep giving us terrible ones in between. I hope they figure it out
I wonder if it's cause they're running out of ideas. Like when they get a good idea the writers get excited, but sometimes they have no idea what to do for an episode and do whatever
It feels like they want to do the most left field plots so the super hyper fans can't predict the next plot point. Sorry if that doesn't make sense English is not my native language.
What if it’s intentional? Hear me out, just for a second… what if the some of the creators, screenwriters, directors, producers, etc, have lots of experience with the TV and show business world to the point of them understanding that you need at least some balance of good and bad to keep a sitcom type show going strong and not being cancelled or annoying the execs too much?
Hear me out. I know it sounds a bit “conspiraciony”, but trust me I’m the last kind of guy to buy into conspiracy stuff, I’m usually more into structured and orderly systems that make sense! Wouldn’t a perfect system be one devoid of any kind of flaws, where all episodes without exceptions are bangers, 10/10s, and nothing is even remotely weak or less perfect?
But one must take into account the nature of TV. I’m not going to write an essay here, but I think most people would’ve gotten my point by now. You will inevitably have weaker and lacklustre episodes in even the most critically acclaimed (as a whole) pieces of media. That is inevitable, particularly when you take into account that media that has had seasons lauded in the past will inevitably tend to be held to higher standards in the future, thus to harsher and harsher ratings and expectations by both the critics and the public alike. An episode or series of ideas/events in the story that could have been seen as “a breath of fresh air” or “mindblowing” if it was aired in the first season of a show, could be rated as “tiresome”, “redundant”, “already been done plenty of times”, “boring” if it happens during a latter season, seeing as judgement and critic is not done in a vacuum, it is influenced by comparison to what has been done before in the show. And if what was done was exceptional in the first or second or maybe even the first half of the third season, then the things done in a 7th, 8th or 9th season will obviously be compared to the “peak” first seasons where everything was brand new and seen as incredibly original and innovative… and thus be prone to negative comparison bias, where the great aspects of something make the aspects of something else seem lacklustre or bad in comparison. Even though, in a vacuum, some of the episodes of the latter seasons may hold their ground, if they were released earlier.
I’m not slamming critics here. Criticism is necessary, audience feedback as well. It can help propel media further and influence creative workers, designers, producers and writers in positive ways.
But it is undeniable that there are certain… “non-dits”, secrets of the industry that can take a long time to understand, or a lot of insider knowledge, or a lot of experience or a lot of good connections with people who know about how it works, to understand. The “contrast effect” (decisional science and choice, how animals or human individuals make a choice of preferring X program instead of Y program is more complex than it seems) I mentioned is a real thing in psychology, it has been borrowed from those researchers that proved it over and over again, and transposed and complemented into economics (choice theory, game theory, etc.), marketing research, public relations, design, creative fields as well, show business, media.
People will tend to like certain episodes/seasons way more if they are put in stark contrast to other weaker episodes/seasons. So what is there to stop the reasoning, at some point in a show, to divert resources towards certain “stronger” episodes, particularly towards the beginning and end of a season, if doing so actually helps said episodes seem even better by contrast with a few weaker one that allowed to save some effort for the others?
Ideally, everything would be perfect and great and amazing, right? It doesn’t play like that often in real life. Even shows with seemingly universal critical acclaim like Breaking Bad had weak/“bad” episodes, as well as some seasons considered “weaker” or less impactful as to the canon of the main story. Same for trilogies like the Godfather, or series of movies like Star Wars. Same for author movies or shows: Lynch was considered a genius of originality and creativity, yet be flopped Dune with a huge budget. There aren’t 50 different “Citizen Kane” for a reason, and if there were, there would surely be at least 10 weaker or bad ones in there.
TV shows’ episodic nature as a medium, particularly in sitcoms like R&M, is prone to contrast paradox and preference bias. Maybe sprinkling in some more mellow or “filler” episodes that don’t take themselves too seriously is all part of the plan. Since trying to make every single episode of a season be perfect and a masterpiece doesn’t happen at all, maybe in the first or (more rarely) second season of a show it can… but afterwards, it either happens in the final season if a show or it doesn’t happen very often at all. It’s normal. Things level off for a while not only due to the staff producing/writing the show, but also due to viewer expectations and their bias of preference marked by contrast bias (hurr durr nothing is equal PEAK season 1 of [insert any show of an episodic nature here]).

@@racool911 Sadly I think that might be the case. After about 5-6 seasons it seems to happen with most series. Most of season 7 seems recycled to me. Only a couple episodes are fresh, but I don't think all are good, and about 2-3 episodes are better than mediocre.

As much as this season has been all over the place in terms of its actual quality, I'll admit that it's a breathe of fresh to not have the tone be constantly blackpilled or needs to have some big nihilistic speech. This is probably the closest since the first 2 seasons where they just felt genuine about things without the obsessive layers of irony wrapped around it.

Yeah like even the less-than-adequate episodes were unique and experimental and actually made me feel something.
Season 7 is like a primordial soup, a chaotic mess where hopefully the good stuff will stick and the bad will be lost to time.

I actually love this season. Sure, there were some mid episodes, but I love the season for what it represents. There was no incest, no self-loathing meta humor or making fun of the audience for caring about the actual lore of these characters. They actually seemed to respect the fans a lot more this season, with giving some obvious fanservice and some banger episodes.
Overall, these episodes feel a lot more…calm? Like I don’t feel the writers’ panic and vexation through the screen anymore. They finally seem more confident in what they’re doing. Maybe in a funny way they NEEDED the show to become less popular so they could continue without the pressure of so many eyes on them.
Idk, while season 7 is definitely not perfect, it’s a breath of fresh air. I personally only hated episode 8, the rest were either good or passable in my opinion. I hope they continue on this path!

I almost feel they were awkward on purpose too to represent Rick being off his game, like ESPECIALLY the Numbercon epieosde completely missing him
They weren't super good but I think calling any of them the worst shit ever is INSANE given the god damn Horse semen, or Voltron or god just actually half the episodes in season 3-5 that felt physically PAINFUL to watch.
I think getting wound up about the Mid Episode Plot twist or an episode missing Rick is being too I guess meta poisioned?
I hated the meta crap too but these meta jokes just felt like in good spirit, at most rick just going "Oh so we're doing that this week"
Tbh I WILL say for Quato though, there was a missed opportunity for the B plot starting after Rick leaves and involving Jerry and/or Beth finding the device and abusing it.
Coulda tightened up the pace of the few bits that dragged, maybe coulda dropped the episode twist earlier.
Numbercons is definitely just DUMB but it feels like overly endearingly cheesey that I have a hard time disliking it.
@@JammyJam5588 I actually liked the Valhalla episode, if for nothing else but that cold open was hilarious AF. Also, Air Force Wong, The Jerrick Trap, and Fear No Mort are in my list of top favorite episodes now, and Unmortricken was an insane lore dump.

Honestly, I found the same. The delivery of the new VAs has more energy to it. Roiland has been very weak for seasons. He must have stopped trying a long time ago.
I honestly think they're just flat out better voice ACTORS than Justin was in the roles. Like it feels as though they're giving much more of a performance rather than just 'doing a voice'

the thing about justin roiland being an ok voice actor is one of the most true things i have ever heard. he does recycle his squeeky voice for literally every other character and its really visible.

Most American VA's have only 1 voice that they do for every character. If you watch anime you will notice this a lot. Roiland however had 3 voices he could do.

@@roostre5254 Roiland is definitely average to above average, but he's definitely not exceptional. The Simpsons have a handful of VA's voicing hundreds of characters. Even Seth MacFarland, someone know for being really middle of the road in quality has a much better range than Roiland.

in the "open your mind" episode, it's really a bummer that without the use of the A and B plots for these episodes we have only so much potential. Imagine a Jerry and Beth side story with the attribute sliders?
Yeah, most of the series' best episodes have great B plots which add a nice level of sophistication. As the reviewer said, too much of season 7 seems like annoying and boring weird for the sake of weird.

Honestly the absence of Rick wasn’t my main issue with the Ice-T episode. That would be the pacing. So much insane stuff was happening that I felt like scenes had no room to breathe. It felt like what people say watching Cocomelon is like.

Now that it seems like Dan Harmon has finally got over his grudge against storylines in R&M, I'm actually kind of excited and hopeful that they keep this Diane arc going for Rick and Morty. I have a couple of ideas where they might be heading with that story beat. It sounds like continued storylines are here to stay too, as one of the writers promised more of it and even teased that they're writing/want to do a season that's just a 10 episode epic saga.
It's kind of stupid how against storylines and lore they often were, going as far to even make fun of people for wanting that through the show (even if it was meant in a lighthearted manner) because _they_ were the ones to introduce it in the first place. If they never had, and kept more a season 1 vibe throughout the rest of the show, nobody would really be hankering for it as much as they have been. People love the lore and want more of it.
I'm happy this show finally got its footing again. This has been the best season we've gotten in years. Finally no more self loathing meta humor and incest plots. Season 7 felt so much more like Season 1 and 2. The season finale felt like Season 1's finale. No giant climatic story, but diving into Rick and Morty's dynamic through Morty's perspective. Episode 5 being a great middle lore action heavy episode. The show is finally taking itself seriously and using its story potential. Not making fun of itself but trying to tell its original story and grow their characters. It's episodic episodes feeling so much better. Not every episode is good in this season, but the good ones are so good! I actually laughed at their jokes this season. Also Justin Rolland sucks. Love the new voice actors!
There is literally 2 good episodes in this season and the rest are unwatchable. You're staring through 6-inch thick rose-tinted glasses to be riding this season so hard, it was the worst we've ever had.

I doubt it will ever peak again since that almost never happens. The Simpsons had some decent episodes after season 7, but no seasons are as consistently good as the ones before.
The season finale was one of my favorite episodes of the series (up there with vat of acid) so it gives me hope for season 8 to have better overall quality.
Yes, but while I think it's nice the finale' was probably the season's best episode, it doesn't redeem the rest which was mostly equal parts good, mediocre, and dreck. The Numbericons episode is awful.

While I disagree with most of the backlash and repetitive videos over the show falling off I’m glad you could highlight the great moments of this season as well as the bad without having a short sighted view of the show just flat out falling flat like most people. They’re taking steps in the right direction and I have faith. Also, I don’t really agree on your season 6 analysis as I feel the season as a whole was solid, and had one of the best episodes of the series that you didn’t mention (6x1 Solaricks)

I’m also someone who disagrees with most of the discourse surrounding the shows recent seasons. It can certainly be criticized but I think the level of quality is still fairly high and this season was outright great

I'm honestly glad about this. It overstayed it's welcome like a guy telling the same joke over and over hoping someone laughs. And it wasn't even really that funny. It only served as shock value. Though I sadly expect another cameo by the baby.

Season 7 episode 5 and 10 were probably two of the best rick and morty episodes ever
This season was so good. Fully dedicating itself to serialization or episodic without needing to spit in the face of 1 side of the audience that wanted to see the former. I could have lived without the Alphabetrium episode though.

To be 100% honest with myself and everyone here, I noticed the new voice acting immediately in the first episode and hated it, and by the end of the first episode, my brain immediately was used to it and I cant go back now.
Yeah, while they aren't perfect, the voices are generally fine. The writing is more the problem I think.

In my opinion, Rick and Morty was one of those shows that needed to end sooner than later.
Even if the show *does* have a format that allows for random disjointed shenanigans, the first seasons very clearly always building up to something specific and you could make out where they were heading. Now it just feels like Family Guy but much less self aware.

yeah i agree. you nailed it. The show seems to honestly TRY again, without sarcastically kicking itself for trying to do something honest. im looking forward to what the writers will do in the next seasons. Season 7, although it has a few episodes that i didnt enjoy very much, had some really great episodes that make me hopeful for the future of this show, while season 5 and 6 just made me lose interest more and more
I thought season 5-6 were more consistent decent at least. Season 7 is bipolar.
This season is complete Trash. The show should have ended around season 4 with some episodes from season 5 and 6 mixed in. The biggest issue with R&M are the fans (as usual). The show started as a ridiculous, random, crass, dark, twisted, demented, crappily improvised, surprisingly clever, animated sci-fi show. The target demographic was the people that enjoyed the weird Adult Swim 'after hours' content. It developed a cult-like following where most "normal" people would never stumble onto it organically. Because it got popular, normal people started watching it but didn't like the elements that made it popular in the first place. Who are now trying to turn it into every other normal PrimeTime TV show instead of watching something more aligned with their personality.
Season 7 feels like it's becoming like every other boring and safe show that normal people can watch to feel "a little naughty" for 30 minutes. A show Sharron in HR can quote at work before laughing and saying "I'm soo bad!" After Season 4 it basically started to develop the same identity crisis The Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park did when they got too popular. It's trying to appeal to diametrically opposed fan bases while obviously but slowly leaning into what is going to make the most money. This was a show for the weirdos that didn't normally watch or like the thousands of shows on TV and craved something a little darker, edgier, and different.
This was one of the very few "safe-spaces" for people that are a little off. It was one of the only place in society where you can escape the need for everything to make sense, be normal, well-written, positive, uplifting, perfect, pretty, and politically correct. This was a show where those horrible repressed dark intrusive thoughts could be said out loud, acted out by random wacky characters, and then laughed at without being embarrassed, judged, or getting in trouble. The show was super meta and encouraged poking fun at yourself for many reason including being a fan of the show. Now it's transforming into animated Big Bang Theory.
Many fans are justifiably upset over the new direction of the show. It's the TV equivalent of your favorite local hole in the wall, family-owned burger joint slowly turning into McDonalds. Millions more people will love it now because it's the safe and familiar taste/presentation they're used to... but it loses its uniqueness and completely alienates the people that made it popular in the first place.

don’t get me wrong, i don’t believe them to be bad, they’re going a great job, but it’s still very noticeable.
especially in episode 5- i feel like evil morty just didn’t sound right half the time, and the scene of his story when “evil rick” get killed i can very clearly hear the difference from the original scene and i’m very surprised people can say they didn’t notice at all

i think that the 'bad' episodes weren't necessarily 'bad episodes', they were just not rick and morty episodes.
yes, there were a few episodes that were just terrible, but some of them, such as rise of the numbericons, weren't a terrible concept alone.
but putting them in a show that relies solely on its two main protagonists makes the episodes widely underperform.
No, the 'Numbericons' was DOA. An entire episode of verbal and math puns is an awful premise to begin with and it only got worse.
I _really_ liked what The Jerrick Trap had to say about identity. Burger and Fries were their own people. And Jerricky was his own person, too.
i'm a big fan of community and know the amazing creative capabilty dan harmon is capable, i've always associated those episodes that just hit as result of his main input. and makes so much sense why now that roiland is gone, that we have some of the best episodes to exist, he's capable to make something so meta it isn't, because thats not his aim, his aim is to create and say something. his works even when absolutlye insane, is grounded in the realism of characters interactions and relationships with eachother, and even through the insanity, he makes it serious, everyone take it serious. and i'm so glad he's brought on his creative team from community, because you can have brilliant brain, but more people to make jokes and the other details is needed.
I think the only reason the voices feel weak in delivery is because they had to dub over Roiland’s already recorded lines, the next season is gonna have way better delivery and will actually show the chemistry of the voice actors
I remembered hearing that Roiland already did the voices before those allegations popped up. I assumed we we weren’t gonna hear the new voice actors until season 8 because of that
Justin Roiland has been notoriously difficult to work with, that much is true, but it doesn't justify false accusations. Not to mention he's an unattractive guy so people wanted the allegations to be true.
For me, this season was finally about the production team getting their sh*t together

Weird thing about the new voices.
In the trailer, Morty's new voice seemed almost perfect and I thought Rick's voice would take some getting used to, but when I saw the actuall episodes, I got used to Rick pretty quickly, but at several times, found Morty's new voice kind of annoying and it made "Evil" Morty weird to listen to.
they don't seem very consistent which I guess is expected for voice actors who are new to the characters.
but on the other hand, I'm sure they could've found much better VAs that wouldn't have had such a noticeable learning curve WITHIN the episodes...
I’m still pissed off because I know none of the new seasons can ever be compared to seasons 1 and 2.
Love the final episode , the burger and fries one , the court one and the afterilfe one but 5 , dude if they comit to the rest of the show like that maybe they can end on a high note

Can’t exactly say Roilland is talentless hack given what all he did.
I wouldn't say fully talentless, he did have a style to him, and was capable of good things,
But he was overpraised prior, and did not make up for his shortcomings, being one note the vast majority of the time when his gig is already abrasive.
He's certianly a hack though, as was a bad experince for almost everyone he worked with, and impressions of his voice and style are common and somewhat easy.

Regarding Roiland, I think that the public announcement of his DV and abuse was sort of the excuse Adult Swim needed to push him off the show without needing to disclose his exact behavior, and thus the behavior that they tolerated for years, to the world at large.
Regarding Season 7, I think it was fairly weak but it did have some peak moments. Not constantly moaning about how everything that is canon sucks and everything is meaningless during the Evil Morty episode was super refreshing.
Whanever a franchise tries new things people call it an identity crisis, it happened with Sonic and people complained because was out of their comfort zone, because in the 2000s wasnt about just Green Hill Zone, and now because Rick and Morty also want to be something else im gonna hear the same thing, i rather an "identity crisis" over stagnation and just be another Assassin's Creed,CoD or Family Guy
so season 7 is a step in the right direction. Let's hope they will go further steps in season 8

I think hiring a few former interns from season 1 as producers what a great idea.
I actually feel the opposite regarding the worst episodes. I liked the Alphabetrium episode despite it not having Rick, but I'm surprised that you never brought up the episodes without Morty. Like yeah, it's Rick and Morty, but you only ever bring up when Rick isn't there. Hell, one of the best episodes puts Morty in the same position as the rest of the family, ie. in the background. So I don't think not having one or the other in an episode makes it bad, and that point isn't fair against any episode.
Other than that, I completely agree about loving the voices, the great episodes, and overall the new fresh vibe this series has ^^
7x4&10 were amazing, they even spoke to me in ways that have helped me though dark times
Crazy thing is I remember watching rick and Morty on cable tv randomly at parents while I was in high school and now I'm a grown ass adult with a house and family and they're finally making episodes
S 7 is the first time I watched fiction and thought "if the plots were written by AI, that's probably how it would look like". It's so bland and generic, like some bot copied "without making it too obvious" and compiled the 6 previous seasons into the average of a soulless, unimaginative rendition of a Rick and Morty season. Watched it two times, and I can't remember a single thing.

S7 E10 might be my favorite rick and morty episode PERIOD. The dialogue feels fantastic, the character development felt like something the show has been missing for a long time, and the delivery of Morty's voice actor upon him finally leaving the hole was MAGNIFICENT. If there is even 1 episode like that every season, it's reason enough for me to keep watching the show, even if we did have numericons and the weird psychic episode in there.
I initially had issues with Rick not being in the hole with Morty but in hindsight, it was the right decision. I wanted Rick to have actually had those experiences with Diane but that would have missed the point of the episode. When he returns at the end, you can tell he's about to jump in the hole. But he stops himself. And this is why.

"Because I don't. And I have to."
I feel similar to what you said in this video, honestly for me there is just so much more actually interesting, maybe even dEeP or philosophical aspects of the characters that they could explore, you can still be funny while doing something of substance and making the characters feel alive, like some episodes of the show have shown. I'm interested in where the characters are going as people and why and how that shows in a fun story.

If I'm being honest Rick and Morty will never be as great and special as it once was in Season 1-2,and I highly doubt will ever reach it's previous highs anytime soon.
I honestly feel like this show might benefit from having the season lengths cut a little bit. Always Sunny has been doing 8 episodes a season rather than 10, and as a result Seasons 15 and 16 have been way more consistent than the couple of seasons that preceded them
I feel like on the same token, with R&M S7, if you cut out the two worst episodes, which would be the premier and the fucking Ice T episode, you’d have a far more consistent season. The worst episode would be the Kuato one, which yeah wasn’t incredible, but I thought was at least a solid mid tier episode

Rick and Morty stopped being good for a long while but people are acting like Justin leaving the show significantly dropped the quality of the show. It really hasn't.
Season 6 was great! The night family, fortune cookie, and Roy episode was amazing! I personally looooved the religious metaphor. Pissmaster episode was amazing too. Season 7 is pretty good. The fear hole is probable the best episode since the vat of acid.

"Well the Ricks wanted to do a Canterbury Tales thing, but none of them actually read f***ing Canterbury Tales, so then they said to make it like the poker episode of the Batman series, where the bad guys tell stories about Batman. Then they said "it needed something" yeah no shit it needed something, it needed to never be pitched. I did my job, Goombi, the Ice Queen, the Tickets Please guy, they just bailed on it, and the website didn't work, and it was a shitty URL to begin with. story-train, who uses a dash? They set me up to fail, they f****d me, they f****d me and you're lucky I haven't blown my brains out. "
That whole episode was symbolic of how annoying the show was getting and the writers knew it. It's like the writers are telling the audience that they didn't care about the show and were only making it because they have to. This new season actually felt like a coin flip every episode on if it's good or not. At least the last episode was good enough to make he hopeful about the series going forward, but man it was so tiring seeing the writers say how tired they are in the episodes. Also there are definitely writers with big egos who treat the audience like brainless consumers for watching and investing time into Rick and Morty, I feel like Justin Roiland fell into that camp. Hopefully Rick and Morty will get it back together with a good story and no episodes about Quattos or Ice-T only.
if you skip the Premier and the ice t episode (as ill be doing on rewatches) this was the most consistently good season in years. Also I agree with the new voices. There was no way Roiland could have pulled off Rick Prime's screaming monologue as Rick beat him to death (You lived...IN MY HOUSE!) I've not had chills from a Rick performance up until that point.

Seasons 1 through 3 are the best, in my opinion, and i think it's because justin roiland actually helped write those seasons, but it's because justin Invisioned something that all the other writers didn't see. So it simply doesn't feel like rick and morty besides at certain points like the last 2 episodes of the other seasons. Hopefully, we see more gravity falls connections because I really want the rick sanchez and stanford Multiverse team up to be canon. Hopefully, it is. Maybe there will be in his next 3 seasons or in the book of bill coming in summer.
