  • Into The Spiderverse has spectacular animation and way back in 2018 it foretold of a revolution to animation as we knew it. But years later in 2023, just how has this ultimate animated movie actually shaped the landscape of the animation industry? Today we take a leap of faith and find out!

    Immersion

Wow, as always you don't dissapoint!
The first time I watched Spider-man: Into The Spider-verse I noticed how different it looked compared to other films of the same year. This movie has started, something that I don't think it's as much as a "New Golden Era of Animation", but more of a *Rebirth of Animation*.

Cool video, it'd be nice to touch upon the influence the east has had on the west with animation. A ton of my inspiration is both drawn from Anime in the East and 3D animation in the West to try and push forward new takes on old ideas, and there seems to be a lot more influence now with the bigger studios experimenting with several of these vastly different aspects from what they've done before.
Anime studios can have a wide array of different styles with some being more exaggerated or stylised even compared to others, eg. a Studio Trigger Anime VS a Makoto Shinkai film. These styles and frame usages with characters fluidly being able to move on 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, within a single action, really make things like spider-verse help push the medium of 3D, as so many influences from 2D helped in pushing the medium forward with old tricks being used in new ways for visual storytelling.
Even good 3D techniques from the West have helped influence Anime with 3D environments being drawn over and Studio Orange using great 3D animation while still trying to replicated the 2D move and feel. Using all of these different influences from different parts of the world and messing with them helps to push forward new ideas and create something new

I do have to say, you put in Arcane as an example, but it took them 6 years to produce and release the first season, so I’m not sure if that was as influenced by spiderverse as some of the other examples shown. That being said, amazing video! Thank you for highlighting this!

Awesome video!! Into the Spiderverse is probably my second-favorite animated movie, after the Lego Movie. I agree that the Spiderverse was both revolutionary and revelationary. I love how they incorporated a new medium into animation and made it so immersive and visually appealing. The Lego Movie was equally revolutionary (in my opinion) because it did the same thing, but with stop motion and animation that resembled Legos instead of comics. Both movies were the first of their kind and were extremely successful. I think they were and still are so popular because audiences are so sick of animation studios churning out endless cookie-cutter movies. We desperately needed something original. I love the Owl House for similar reasons. I really hope we continue to get more new styles that push the boundaries of animation. In the meantime, the Lego Batman Movie was a stellar sequel, so here’s hoping Across the Spiderverse is too!

You got many things wrong spidetverse was influential no debate but it didn't do everything. Arcane was in production way more than 5 years and Disney's whish style was about to be implemented before spider verse and it's color paint style was way different than spider verse it didn't invent the style. Let's not forget we should not advocate replacing fully cg animation we made the same mistake before with toy story we should not do it again not every cg movie from now on has to look like spider verse I think it's less diverse than anything and it's a hot take but this new style can feel repetitive and cookiecutter. The style automatically is not great if it manages to be made by talentless people it would feel "artsy" with clichés like lowering framerates on fights. This art style has potential so does fully cg it's unfair to refer it as "for babies" when define dancing came out of it I can't imagine any art style that could have made that sense justice also other movies like moana and Encanto are gorgeous and I think they would be less if it had spider verse style. I think if Disney just switched to it completely we would get sick of this art style and remember fondly just like the old Disney movies. My solution is to have everything little bit of realism from pixar like soul with spectacular visual that makes you immersed to the world and compliments the story. All kinds of 2d animations. Fantasy from Disney like moana with how could I put it? High contracts? And hybrids from dreamworks and Sony. And Im 100 percent advocating every studio to do different styles so they don't infamously remembered for their style but I'm confident dreamworks can't do Disney/pixar style because of budget but Disney and pixar should go for the new stylized route but not as much and the expense of forgetting the style that they're really good at. Finally let's not forget about 2D animation because of the new fancy style.

Thank you for your comment! I just wanted to address some of the points in your comments to hopefully clear some things up.
As far as the clip for Arcane goes, I was using it during a section when I was trying to make a point how exciting 3D animation was becoming in the years following into the spiderverse. I suppose I could have cut it to not confuse it as something that was directly influenced by into the spiderverse but I feel it was acceptable within the context of that section of the video (but maybe that's just me).
And as far as Wish goes, I didn't claim in the video that it was following Into The Spiderverse's art style, but rather that Disney was opting to invest in stylizing their animated films as a result of seeing how much audiences were enjoying the diversity of visuals that spiderverse provided. I never once claimed Into The Spiderverse "invented" an art style that people were copying (most of the video covered how it evolved traditional animation techniques rather than inventing their own). Besides, Wish didn't enter production until 2022 (Spiderverse was 2018) so I'm not sure what you mean when you say its style was about to be implemented before Into The Spiderverse.
Additionally, I didn't ever claim that traditionally 3D animation was "for babies", I think you confused a line where I said 3D animation was still a baby compared to 2D animation (as in it's still a fairly new style of animation comparing the two). In fact I said I had no problem with it besides the fact that everyone was doing it with little variation on techniques.
As far as advocating for it to replace cg, I also made the point that it would be a problem if people tried to replicate an abstract style of 3D animation without taking into account how important each decision was for a team who did it well aka the spiderverse team. My intention was not to implicate that it should replace it entirely, just that there's more that could be done with it than studios have been actually trying.
I would also like to mention that I completely agree with you on your last few points (your solution) to keep things fresh but still sensible with the stories studios are trying to tell. I think Wish for Disney is a great example of that personally, so you hit the nail on the head!
Hopefully this helped clear some things up as well as and thank you for your comment! Have a great rest of your day!
