    Your right about the importance of getting the dope thinners mix correct.

    Very, very cool build, Cliff. I had a chuckle when I saw the hair care brand bottle I use, sat on your modelling board... then it all made perfect sense 😄 Can't wait to see this lovely Triplane flying!

    Doculam does indeed have the same shrinking power as regular coverings, it just takes an industrial heat gun and much higher heat then the hobby iron can deliver. It's still not as stretchy as Monocoat or Ultracoat, so one has to be super on top of it for the initial tacking down. You moved very quickly, more quickly then I do with mine using a hobby iron though.

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thanks for that info, I didn't want to shrink It too much anyway as it's a fairly light structure but I'll try more heat and slower next time, cheers

      @@CliffHarveyRCPlanes There is low temp Doculam and I would be totally off with the recommendation if you were using it, but high temp seems to be the bulk of what's out there and started with 1.7 mil, using 1.5 now, it took some rather getting it through my thick head, this stuff loves high heat, well, until it melts a big hole because you pushed it too far, but that's for another dialog. I discovered using glue stick in tangent with the Doculam, laying it down tissue paper style has huge advantages and it doesn't require so much high heat to at least get those initial tacks down, but once full, Doculam level heat is applied, you are ripping up the stock it's adhered to before removing it from it, so use it tactfully in areas you have no plans to reposition. Polyhedral wing just done up with this combo worked out perfect and you know how hard they are to do.

      Hi Brian, I'm not quite sure the advantage of sticking the Doculam down with gluestick, does the glue stick prevent the Doculam glue from adhering?

    She is coming along rather nicely, well done. I have a question regarding the dope you are using. It seems to be of a quite dark brownish colour, why would that be? The dope i had back in the days was totally clear and had only a slight tinge into a very thin golden yellow, i always could see the bottom of the tin through the dope. Why is yours so dark?

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thanks Elnufo, I think it's just tainted with a less than clean brush ... I think it adds character 😁👍

    Hey Cliff, I see you working your medelling majic again! Looks wonderful and professional! Had a question about the Doculam - I've been trying to get some closer to Canada, but all of the product available here seems quite thick (3 - 5 mil), whereas yours appears to be 2.5mil or so. Any ideas on where I can get my hands on some of that good stuff? 😊

    Looking great Cliff, a question, why do you need to thin out the Dope?

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thanks Chris, two reasons really, thinned it goes on more evenly and doesn't over-shrink the tissue and more importantly the thinners evaporates so half the weight is gone 🙂👍

      @DadsRCHangar Před 2 měsíci

      @@CliffHarveyRCPlanes what ratio would you say is a good mix?

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  Před 2 měsíci +1

      @DadsRCHangar you can start with 50% dope and if that's not enough you could add a little more or less on a test piece and see the result 👍

  • @yassermasood3423
    @yassermasood3423 Před 2 měsíci +1

    That's a fine job. I am still trying to understand the coverings.
    Why did you cover it twice, first with doculam and later with tissue? Will that not increase the weight?
    What dis you use for dope? Deluxe material dope?

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  Před 2 měsíci

      Hi Yasser, the Diculam adds very little weight but adds a lot of strength to the tissue 👍 I use cellulose dope suitably thinned with cellulose thinners made by 'Guild' 🙂

      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  Před 2 měsíci

      @@yassermasood3423I've never used to the deluxe materials dope but I have used deluxe materials glue and it's very good, I suspect the only difference is the price 👍
