I think the lines wouldn't be so difficult to work around if they were printed in a very light gray instead of black, so they're more of a guideline than structured shapes

@@jaynitaanncarney Well, if he weren't extremely good he would not have had a staff, or anything else. This is how it works in all the arts. It's probably worse in writing where it happens on a nearly yearly basis. I don't think James Patterson has written a book in years. He comes up with a brief outline, and then a ghostwriter turns it into a novel.
But he had to be good enough to get rich, and make his publisher a ton of money, before he was allowed to do this. I hate the process, but there's no stopping it.

@@jamesaritchie1 I believe it was his marketing, not his skill, that made Thomas Kinkaid "rich and famous." Think of how many lower skilled artists are popular and how many highly skilled ones are obscure.
I love when people alter original works by famous people, or otherwise "ruin" it for resale value. Like when a kid wrote to the author of Where The Wild Things Are, and got a letter back with original art, and the kid was so delighted that he ate the paper 😂 so if you feel like coloring in the pumbaa at all, I say go for it

Maybe a glass painting (I mean paint on the underside of the plastic/glass in the frame). That would give the effect of colour but still keep its genuinety
@@SarahRenaeClark oh noo i disagree, i dont think you should colour it in... but instead you might want to photocopy and paint in the copy? That way youll get both the original and a "painted" original haha
One of the top artists offers two versions of her coloring pages: simple and intricate. It's nice that way.
While indicating where the light is coming from, maybe those lines make sure you can't do an exact copy.
I don't like seeing a picture coloured, as I wish to do it myself. Once I have seen a picture coloured, I can't un-see it.

True. I'm the same way when seeing a page colored before hand. In a way it takes away from my creativity but on the other hand helps me learn and expand my imagination.

I have this 500 piece jigsaw puzzle, but all the puzzle pieces are black and white and so you have to put it together and then color the puzzle any color you want. It was really fun!
When I worked in my college library, we had this puzzle that my supervisors generously called the "mean puzzle" it was something like five hundred or a thousand pieces, completely covered in Dalmatians, but the print was on both sides. I have no idea where they got it or what company makes it, but for all the late(ish) night hours we spent doing puzzles I was never brave enough to try that one lmao 😅 (also, I don't think you should color that picture of pumba, but maybe a photocopy of it on some better paper... 🤔)
Embracing the black lines was the right choice. You can't even make them out in the final result. It looks stunning.
I agree with your opinion about black lines, especially if they are thick. I just remembered that I got sometime ago a watercolor coloring book (flowers, leaves, etc) by artist Kristy Rice. Her book is made of light grey lines and it is printed on heavy watercolor paper. Each page is repeated twice, so if you make mistakes, you can use the one at the back. The instructions are also printed on watercolor paper, so those can be used to practice.
So, I guess the publishers should aim to provide adult coloring books with grey lines and fewer details for adults who like to experiment and mix colors freely without the limitation of black lines.
This is so interesting, because while it does seem like an excellent learning tool - using contextual colors for shading and highlights, as you mentioned, which is a great skill to learn! - it also shows the limitations of the Thomas Kinkade style. The overwrought, highly saturated style struggles more in pencils than oils. Not a bad introduction to how to play with color and lighting, though!
It's amazing how much you can learn from studying the reference image so closely... the colors in the original are just so amazing, great job with this one!
Great job! Just a suggestion, you could scan the page into your computer, make the edits you want, possibly lighten or even change the colour of the lines then print the page onto the paper you want and colour that in XD I know it's a few extra steps but might be worth it 😁👍 either way, you still do a great job ❤️
I always photocopy pages from colouring books cos I don't like to colour in books (transfer problems, bleeding, density etc) but can't bring myself to destroy a book to single out the pages either!
I bought this book to help me learn new skills and methods. It’s on sale for around $7 on Amazon. My first attempts will definitely be on copies of the pages because I’m nowhere near skilled enough to dive right in on an actual page. I understand the disappointment that he didn’t personally paint every picture but I’m not disappointed, I see his name as being a distinct style, which people love or hate, but either way it’s a challenge and an opportunity to learn how colors trick the eye into seeing details that aren’t actually there and creating art that changes based on the ambient lighting it’s viewed in. It’s been helpful to see your process so thank you for sticking in there despite the frustrations and lines.

Thanks SRC. I loved hearing your thoughts on intricate vs “open” line work - it would be cool to see this developed more in a video about how you create colouring pages. I’ve been thinking about the mechanics of what goes into a good colouring page a lot recently - it’d be great to have more of your input as a professional and an educator in this area.
I’m learning so much more about this as I color more too. My most recent coloring pages look totally different to the first books I designed.

That Pumba page is so cool!!!!!!
I stumbled upon shading with different colors vs darker/ lighter versions of the same color in high school. I liked using my gel pens for art anyway, which didn't have the best range, but one piece felt like it should be entirely in the glitter gel pens specifically-- of which I had about six or seven colors total. But it was fine, yellow was shaded with orange and pink with purple. It really made the piece more vibrant than any of my other contemporary pieces.
Nice gel pens are really great for cell shaded pieces, imo, as long as you can work fast enough for the ink to still be wet enough for strokes to blend into each other rather than look scratchy.
Nothing beats I Love Hue for practising looking at different colours.
You did a fantastic job! Hearing about the struggle with the dark lines reminded me of Eriy's tracing books! The lines are a very faint gray and totally disappear under the pencils! I've suggested Eriy's Romantic Country books before because I think your style would compliment her pictures nicely, but maybe the Tracing Series would be an even better match!
I love the Original artwork of Pumbaa and the cups as well.

You can use a white out fine point pen to remove the lines I put a layer then lightly sand the white out to make smooth on the pages then color over them :)

Great job Sarah! I think I already told you how Thomas Kinkaid 'painter of light' is my favorite artist. Specifically because of his 'light' techniques. I was wondering about that. I’m glad to have clarification. I’m a bit surprised that Kinkaide painted Disney pictures at all.
I bought this book after seeing it on Mira Byler's channel and I hadn't really looked through it yet with the which ones are Thomas' work eye yet. Excellent point! I have a calendar with the original Disney set and I did notice some of these weren't in the calendar. And obviously Tangled is too new for Kinkade to have painted himself, but Dumbo surprised me.

It’s by far one of my fave coloring books. I have probably spent at least 30hrs on it, yet I haven’t finished a single page. 🤷♀️🤣 I just love to use it as a way to relax, so I flip through find a character or object or something that I feel looks interesting and work on it. So every page has a lil piece somewhere on it done. Helps take off the pressure, and let’s me give in to my ADHD ways without feeling guilty. 😅

I started using colored lighting when I picked up prismacolors because I've always been inspired by theatrical light both on stage and animated. As a theater major and a halloween kid with way too many SFX lighting has allowed me to see a lot of items in new lights literally and use that as a reference in my art.
Your picture looks incredible. I am so impressed. Looking forward to seeing how Dumbo turns out 😂. I am so happy to be able to watch a video again. I have been super busy. Back to "normal" schedule next week. I just could not resist taking time out. I am so happy I did because I learnt a lot. Thank you.

If you have a copier, you could copy the pumba print and print it onto colouring paper, that way you can keep the original intact!
I feeeeeel you! When a coloring book is too intricate and detailed it's a reason to not buy it for me. I don't need needlethin spaces I need to color with a microscope! When I want micromanaging stressors I go to Reddit, not to my coloring book.

I painted an adult paint by numbers of wolves a few years back and was completely confused to be painting the wolves green in some areas. Once the painting was complete and up on my wall, you obviously couldn’t see the green.

Oh my gosh the orginal artwork of Pumba, that's something I'd love to own as well. The Lion King was my first fav Disney movie growing up, unlike most girls growing up I wasn't a huge fan of the princesses because I wasn't much of a girly girl. I did like playing with dolls but I didn't like dresses or anything like that. Still not that girly as an adult lol but I do enjoy more princesses now. Those cups bring back so many memories from my childhood! We had the Looney Tunes set and I remember always using the Slyvester one. We ate noodles out of them and had hot chocolates out of them, even soup. The page came out so good, all the colours make so much more sense as a whole.
I’ve seen the Looney Toons set too! I think they were from Hungry Jacks in Australia?
@@SarahRenaeClark I'm from New Zealand so I'm not 100% sure where my Dad got them. I do believe there was a limited time period where they were at a petrol station. You spent so much and got a discount on getting a cup or you could out right buy them but they were more expensive that way.
This reminds me of when I was in art class once and we were asked to paint some mountains in the background. The teacher told us to start with a pale purple and at the time I was really confused as to why we would use purple but when the piece was finished, I realised why

I saw your collaboration with acd and i looooooved it so much,I bought the Disney book but when I started with so much expectation.......i was soooooo disappointed when i realized all those lines, soooo many not okay lines 😥😥😥😥i didn't know how to begin and my hubby said ”you can do it ” i really tried and....FAILED......after this video, I will give it another try.......thank you so much for this video and I love the way you do this videos, much much informations and to learn more. If you want to color in the original Pumba, why not just scan it then print it off on the paper of your choice? That way you can have your cake and eat it too.
I do this with my own lineworks sometimes so I can do a graphite/watercolor/colored pencil version of the same piece.
