Why not put the candy soda into a food processor instead of just hitting it to break it up? That way it’s more of a powder than just rocks. The strands should end up thinner and fluffier.

It probably wont stay dry inside the processor, the nature of the sugary sodas would stick to the blades and doesn't give the desired result

it could be like normal cotton candy because the thing that causes it to pop is the little pressurized carbon dioxide bubbles it so if you put it in the cotton candy maker they might explode in there but they wont pop when you eat it (in cotton candy form)

To make cotton candy maker to work properly, all that candy should've been ground down further to be similar to granulated/white sugar. Which honestly, that's all cotton candy actually is. I imagine most of that would have worked if it was ground finer and not just broken into chunks.

random fact: probably surprising for most americans, but in europe high fructose corn sirup isn't used to sweeten stuff, we use sugar from sugar roots mostly.
The thumb-shaped lollipops awakened a long-forgotten memory of a candy I had a few times when I was a kid, I think it was literally called Thumb Suckers, and it was, as the name implies, a thumb-shaped sucker, maybe twice the size of an average human thumb? IIRC they had a soft rubbery (maybe silicone?) covering and may or may not have had edible wax on the base. I hadn't thought about or remembered those things in literal decades.

I actually make candy all the time and just FYI humidity will effect your candy. If it is too humid your candy will not set up.
Mexican doesn't use cane sugar. It says sugar but it isn't. Science has determined this, which would explain your experiment where you didn't get sugar powder and got a caramel colored liquid instead.
It was so Dense because he kept the cone directly above the heating element which causes the cotton to melt slightly creating a more dense cotton on the cone. Keep the cone away from the warm spindle in the center and your cotton candy will be more Fluffy.

We make granulated maple sugar on our farm and we make it by boiling the syrup to about 270° and then putting it in a mixer like a kitchen aide. It will pour like a liquid but by mixing it the rest of the moisture come out and you are eventually left with granulated sugar crystals. we also make maple cotton candy by using the maple sugar.
Since we make maple syrup from sap that is 98% water, I'm wondering if just boiled the soda down to 270° (it might take a lot!) and then you could easily make granulated sugar. This should work for any sugary product if you mixed it with water.

You should try using 2 parts cotton candy sugar, (plain, or superfine sugar put through the food processor) and one part coca-cola that's been reduced down to hard-crack stage then put through the food processor until it's almost powdered....mix the cotton candy sugar with the coke "sugar" then pour small amounts of mix into the machine. you might have to play with the ratios but I'd bet it would work well & get the taste you want.
