I hate adverts and won't allow them on my videos, but I am trying to save up for better equipment (not to mention the huge overheads that come with the essential Pub of the Week segment) so every little helps! Hang on that's an advert isn't it...
Thanks for your support it means a lot 8^}

Ah, swing bridges, my mortal enemies. Have just discovered your videos, and have been single handing for 4 months from London to Skipton and back again. Nice to see loads of the same places in your vids
Hi Kewen - that's so cool, and welcome! I'll be following the same route as you've done so definitely chip in with any advice if you want! Cheers!
Braver than me, I wouldn't dare
Very interesting, used to work at Tarleton by the canal - understand the River Douglas is also called the Asland. The docks at Tarleton used to be a very busy port bring in boats from Cumberland before the canal the River Douglas was navigable. Thanks again.
Great video pity your crossing was cancelled . We bought our boat 2 months ago from St Marys Marina at Ruffird it's a beautiful spot . We took our boat to the Lancaster canal where it is now moored but on the back of a wagon as we are only novices and were not ready for the ribble link yet . Look forward to your next update
Great video and very interesting look forward to your next one
That intro almost made me choke on my coffee :D :D :D
Decided I'd watch all your CZcams vlogs from the beginning as I've only seen the BBC series on TV since it started. There's just so much historical & general information I never knew! This one stood out because my little home town of Kendal was mentioned 😂 i think Canal head was the end of the route until around 1944 when it was no longer needed. So fascinating!
Thanks for the adventure. It was a fun ride.
Loved that mooring - on the chains and on your own, perfect ... there's always a railway somewhere though!
Going through your 'back catalogue' Robbie. You are the original and the best! When I'm cranking your guitar riffs go through my head. Best wishes - NB Froya
Ha ha that’s great to hear thank you!
Worthy of a second (or possibly third) watch!
What a shame we couldn't cross the Ribble Estuary. I hope your dad wasn't too disappointed too. Onwards and upwards! A super video, Enjoyed the history lesson too. Thaanks for taking me along.
Tranquillity in digital form. Love it. Thanks Robbie.
You are always entertaining to watch; You have the best sense of humor. More pub, and café reviews at your ports of call Please, my fav.
Aw thanks Lori. I've almost finished the next episode, should be up later - including a special pub review I've been waiting a month to upload 8^)
What a good video everything you told us about the Lancaster Canal was what I was going to tell you about the canal you didn't sail been to the Stork very good pub you must visit Lancaster and don't worry it's "DEAD" safe can I say dead safe
Ha ha yes you can Tony, drove through it but one day as I said we will return and get to know it proper!
Like Jacqueline Stafford I’m watching all your back catalogue having watched the BBC series. I’m Lancaster born and bred. I was looking forward to seeing the Lancaster Canal. I do know Tewitfield from doing country walks up there.
The Stork pub had a fire in January of 2020. But I’m pleased to say it’s once again open.
hell yea same here love the drone shots
Great fun informative vid again.
Enjoyed you explaining tackling the swing bridge. Looking forward to the next one. Thanks
Blummin good stuff Rob thanks for the name check! and looks like your perfecting those swing bridges! Probably need a longer rope! Oh the disappointment of not doing the Ribble crossing a great build up and we felt your pain.. Love it.
Ah you're welcome dude - thanks again for the tip! Didn't smash any nav lights but defo need to repaint the nose now!
What an emotional rollercoaster you took us on, what with the nerves and the wind issues and the disappointment! 😉 Great video!
Yeah I know soz 8;^)
I often cycle along here and walk the hounds. It’s a lovely part of the world. If ever you’re up here again, let me know and I’ll buy you a pint at The Ship Inn. Thanks for your great videos and stay safe.
Great video Robbie . Nice soundtrack too
Thanks that actually means a lot!
+Robbie Cumming One day . when I can afford it I want come on a narrow boat holiday . it's a long way from Southern Africa to the English Midlands
Excellent! There are loads of hire companies, can be quite pricey (£1,200 a week for some) and as long as you don't go too fast past our boats you'll be made most welcome!! 8^D
Great vid. Shame about the lack of crossing but, on the bright side, your boat is still above water!
Great to see that you're still cranking it ;-) Congratulations on getting up so far north, but remember winter is coming...Talking of the 90s: *read in silky-voiced voiceover artist style* ."Robbie's vlogs are noted on CZcams for their host's exquiste tastes." *read in badly-dubbed French seductress style* "With your canal videos you are really spoiling us." *back to voiceover man* "Robbie's canal vlogs -- a sign of good taste."
Brilliant, thank you so much!! You should make some CZcams videos yourself I bet they would be a laugh 8^D
Cheers Robbie! Nice idea but I haven't got the time to animate myself ;-) Looking forward to Wigan.
Great vlog, sorry you didn't make it but it will make it even sweeter when you do get to fulfil that goal. Keep travelling well 😁
Thanks very much Trace. You're right, and we will return triumphant!
Great informative vid again. Especially the swing bridges. Looking forward to the next one.
Cheers Craig, glad to hear! Next one will be up online today at 4pm 8^)
Hi Robbie, love the informative vlogs there great. you mentioned the boat bashing the canal walls in strong winds, we had a hire boat boat in Lancashire and it had two very small tyres on top that we were told were for that very same purpose to cushion the boat against the banks or canal walls. There's alway tyres knocking about.
Steveo
Thank you! I’m ok, got fenders, but yeah go kart tyres or ones from scooters are best I think!
Fab vlogs :) love your style and humour in your commentary. Keep up the great work 👍
Thank you Rebecca that’s really kind of you! 8^)
Fantastic effort. Very sad that you couldn't get accross the Ribble. I really do admire your determination to succeed and wish you the best.
Thanks John, very kind - always helps knowing people like yourself are egging me on 8^)
Well done robbie👏👏👏😁👍
Thanks David!! 8^)
Hi Robbie that was where I did my training on that canal and it was fun
🤓👍
I have been on that canel on a day course on a 57 foot norrow boat and it was fun I can wait to get my own boat
I’m a new subscriber after listening to you on Loose Ends - great videos, I’m looking forward to watching them all 😁
Thanks Michaela and welcome!
Love the adventure truly amazing
Kevin and I were moored at Tarleton and Burscough. Friendly area, chickened out crossing to the Lancaster and lifted out to the Lancaster Canal instead. Happy days, great video:)
Thanks and good to know there are other ways of doing it! 8^)
Robbie Cumming our BMC1.5 wasnt reliable enough to risk the crossing
Shame you couldn’t complete that stage of your trip Robbie, lovely vlog as usual take care mate 👍
Did Robbie get over the Ribble and Slavic brook, we have done it and it's a challenge alright. But enjoyable when across.
Great to see the Rufford branch - did you find that great pub at the top? St Mary's Marina is where I used to live, before I moved to France - loved it there. Thanks for fantastic videos - a la prochaine....
Thanks, no I missed it as I needed to find a train station to moor near 8^( but it looked good! See you and merci d'avoir regardé ma video ha ha!
I'm enjoying your channel and have just watched the first 8 episodes. I've now subscribed and I'm looking forward to watching the rest of your downloads.
Shame about the Ribble link, I was looking forward to seeing your trip up my local river. You should try the swing bridge into Preston Dock Marina.
Great to see you explore the disused part of the Lancaster Canal north of Tewitfield too.
Thanks also for the spoiler warning before I read all the comments.
Hi Karl - no problem! The devil is in the details etc and these videos all tell a story, well that's the idea! Loved visiting your neck of the woods, but yes me and Dad v disappointed not to have been able to cross the ribble link. Thanks for watching and subscribing! 8^)
Hi from Tucson AZ USA - I find you're canals fascinating and you are a good host. I would appreciate a few more maps to show where you are and where you are going. Cheers
-johnny
Hi Johnny - thank you very much - and yes that is a great idea I'll see if I can do something about that, although I am always conscious about copyright!
About the cut off canal...not understanding why they didn't raise that section of highway above the canal when they built it, just in case it was needed again. Good going on your getting through those swing bridges. I like the music toward the end.
Thank you Elspeth - yes that was at a time when although many groups were trying to bring the canals back for recreational use, the companies that owned them were not so keen let’s say!!
well, coitus interruptus there, I was really looking forward to a well choppy crossing of the Ribble and your puny Lister failing to cope with the tides :-) :-) :-D
Oh dear, well I’m sorry to put you off your stroke! Please take my video of the tidal Ouse instead, it’s much more gratifying (as I was actually allowed to do it!) 8^D
I'm on the Lancaster Canal next time you're up that way you'll have to let me know best pubs up there is guys Court
Would have been interesting to see if you made it Robbie! But thinking this was a blessing in disguise, the Gods looking out for you and the Naughty Lass. Have watched two boats do it now, one on tow, one with a pilot and both held me in suspense!
I’ll get there one day! Cheers for watching Andy 8^)
I have to agree with you that the Stork is a good choice for pub of the week.
Sadly 13 months or so ago they had a big fire that almost destroyed the pub. However, it is being restored and has the roof back on and the windows back in. News on their Facebook page: (3) The Stork at Conder Green | Facebook
If you make it up to the Lanky give me a shout. I will come and open the locks for you (wink). No seriously I have just completed a thorough walking of every section of the canal from Kendal to Preston, the Link Canal and the tramway link as well as Lancaster Canal South End. Walton Summit Branch to Wigan Top Lock. There are more than a few interesting things I could show you that are easily missed.
Great thanks Nick!
Great job on the vids
Thank you!
Nice bit of wind that, blew my whole front gardern fence down and two 7x7 ft gates off the back garden too....Happy days... Just noticed narrowboat Helen for sale on Apollo Duck so looks like no more video's there, pritty good channel too...
Oh no really that's not good!! The local fence manufacturers will be busy I reckon! Yes NB is being sold but I will certainly get Phil onboard in one of my videos and perhaps he will continue on a different topic, he's v good at industrial history etc and has so many stories!
yep, shame to see him go was looking forward to seeing the fit out of Helen, but life goes on & maybe someone else will video the rest like dan brown boat is now having, all the best.
Brilliant. Love the humour . Feel so sorry for Rick the Troll. ****************
Ha ha yeah poor guy!!
Top Man! Original. Great editing. Great music. But no Ribble :( Next time like you say. I never managed either:(
Ah thanks man! Yes one day we'll get there!
Really enjoyed that, pity you didn't get across the link. I bought my first boat from St Mary's marina at Rufford in August, spent a month up and down the branch, then across the Ribble in September. My boat also has Lister power, an SR2, but opted to get a tow across. I figured that the £60 fee was money well spent.
Cheers Keith! Sounds good - exactly what I would do next time I think.
New Subscriber :-) Nice and interesting video Robbie :-)
Thank you and welcome onboard Russ!
Watched this again Robbie, great stuff! When do you think you may tackle the Ribble again?
No idea… might have to be on another boat!
Trait field pronounced chewit more useless info from Australia I was born in Morecambe approx 20 miles away cheers n beers Marty
the curse of the swing bridges - luckily at my mooring on the Leeds Liverpool have three miles of open countryside with none of these so can make a 6 mile round trip. When I go further I wait for someone else to go through - lucky I have plenty of time. Problem is the electric bridges (like at Apperley Bridge and a couple East of Skipton) carry such busy roads there's no way motorists would wait for you to tie your boat on and have it pulled through. Suspect road rage type consequences.
+FCWatford1 Yes I think I've caused a few of those 8;^D Only joking have actually never come across an angry motorist. The canals were kind of there first after all
I don't bother with the tying to the bridge as I am not skilful enough. :D I usually pull the boat in on the opposite side to the bridge workings by the bollards, grab my bow rope and walk across the bridge with the rope, passing it through the bridge bars is necessary. Open the bridge and pull the boat near enough to me to climb on. Walk down the gunwales to the stern and drive the boat through. Stop when the stern just passes the bridge, jump off with stern rope, close the bridge. This is assuming of course that there is at least a tiny piece of land in the workings side in which to jump on and off. The ones on the Peak Forest Canal and Llangollen branch of the Shropshire Onion have one bollard on each side of the workings end of the bridge, as a token gesture to single handers ;) Maybe this is not possible where you are in this video. BTW, I agree, help is really nice but there's nothing like single handing these tricky situations. A great sense of achievement.
Absolutely mate and yes I think it sounds like I used your technique on one or two!
Dont sink on the Ribble Link!
Hi Robbie. Love your clips. I was curious...do you worry about yobs a lot? That would probably be my primary concern with this lifestyle
Nah. No more than they worry about me! Sometimes I even get them to open lock gates for me 8^)
This is my area Hesketh Bank.
Great video, very interesting. The name here is Martin. You have another subscriber. I am subscribing. :-D
Hey Martin thank you so much, that is a great compliment from a well established CZcamsr! 8^D
very informative, Id like to live in a boat eventually :)
Thank you! That's cool, best of luck with finding the right one for you - hope these videos help! 8^)
They help a lot Thank you x
cracking videos...who does the music....i like it...im thinking about setting a recording studio up on a boat....i want to sail to the silence....no need to sound proof
Hi Brian sorry I missed your comment, music all made by myself - www.soundcloud.com/cobedy Recording studio on a boat would be ideal, great acoustics surely.
Really? That's so unlucky! Well not for your nerves but for the adventure. You'll have to find yourself another challenge to conquer!
Loved the longer length video it's great to sit back for a while. Some interesting thoughts on the boat bumping on the side that never crossed my mind before as a consideration to pro's and cons of boat life.
Looking forward to the next one!
Thanks Matt great to hear! Yeah, it was all down to wind being too strong, but also my engine - I was told last minute by lock keepers that I'd struggle to make it before the tide got too low - and also the time I had to go across and come back left me with only a day on the Lancaster - not worth it even if allowed to cross. Not to worry, we'll be back!!
Ahhh you see it's less of a concern if the risks outweigh the worth it/uber cool factor... It's a careful balance but it's completely understandable.
What was up with your macbook in the end? Dust or just needed a software tidyup?
I'm a little keen to know more about your engine and so on. You don't see lots and lots of those Listers these days. Do you feel its underpowered or could the prop be sized up to give you more umph because you've not got enough high end revs? Sorry... I'm killing time before work. lol
I don't know really. I'd like to get a 3 cyclinder just to be able to have more power on rivers and open water but my current Lister is fine really, just a little slow! Macbook overheating when editing long videos I think 8^[
*also googles macbook cleaning kits*
Is it an easy transplant and more interesting is your current engine worth any cash so you can recover some funds in the process?
I'll take that google challenge, cheers ;o)
Hey Robbie, loving your stuff from down here in Australia, making plans for my return to UK and the water. How does your twin cyl Lister cope with going against the current on a tidal river. Do you time your travels for around slack water or doesn't it bother it ?? Keep on Cranking the vids out
Thanks! It’s so difficult for a relative novice like myself to accurately time these things as each tide seems different to me and I don’t have any equipment to record it all - one day! The Lister is built for chunting along really, a workhorse not built for speed! 8^)
I think he's a 'Time Traveller' anyway
sad to say the Stork was gutted by a fire...Fire ravaged Lancaster pub bosses say it will be "some time" before it re-opens | Lancashire Evening Post (lep.co.uk).....love it down at Glasson...often go down there for a ride about when doing Geocaching....
😩 thanks for letting us know
👍
Another good video m8, seems that you get around the country a lot, do you ever take a winter cart mooring or marina mooring? Keep up the good work :)
I'd love to try one to see what it's like, but for the moment I'm enjoying the challenge of moving around and seeing a different patch every week or so. You?
I don't think they are value for money at all, but a friend of mine is building two brand new marinas for I think 40 boats, so might give it a try if I get a free bee that is lol
Yeah why not eh?! Especially if he sorts you out with free water/electric too!
Have to see what happens as we own the land next to the marinas but has offered us jobs to work there full time, but have said he would have to make us a good deal in order to give up what we are allready doing & he said don't worry you will be sorted, plus he isnt the type that pisses around.
Tell yur Pop: to err is 🥺 human. To arr is 🏴☠️ pirate.
As far as the mishap, all you can do is try...👍👍👍
Some time during the winter I watched some magnet fishing videos in the canal system. One thing that this guy kept hauling out of the canal, near the locks, was the ‘key’ used for cranking the lock doors open and closed. In this video of Robbie’s I noted with concern how he, one handedly turned his small key and felt that all it would take is a slight slip and it would fall into the canal. Ll you need is a string or (better yet, a leather loop firmly attached to the key which you would wrap around your wrist before you got off your longboat and it should remain secure until you get back aboard and secure it in it’s designated spot. Unless you actually like stress !!!!
What's the music at 18 minutes?
It’s a song I wrote called ‘Tow Path’ I have been trying to re record it as that version was recorded with my old band
Here’s the full track on.soundcloud.com/9aLsq3MGyranvB7H7
So did you drive to Tewitfield? Bit confused how you turned back from the Ribble but ended up on the other side of it.
Great point Mike, yes we did just so we could explore that part, sorry I should've explained that!
Drive-by Abuser giving you some lip? It's a pity you didn't make it to the Lancaster, it would have been great to see you conquer the Ribble! Depending on timing (back at work on Monday...) the offer still stands for a hand up the locks - just wasn't expecting to until the link re-opened next year!
I couldn't resist, love Modern Toss and that moped went over the bridge at the perfect moment! Anyway cheers James - should be in Wigan this Saturday so I will hope to see you there at the first lock at 6am... ok not that early but hopefully see you there at some point this weekend!
I might be able to make it down today, but if not - how far up are you going today?
Hey dude, just going into Wigan via appley bridge today and plan to take on the locks tomorrow. Don't worry if you can't help as there is always someone around to share the locks with 8^) PS Your avatar prompted me to watch 10 episodes for the first time last night! It's brilliant!
+Robbie Cumming
Wubba-lubba-dub-dub! Favourite episode so far? Sorry I couldn't make it this weekend, but (assuming you haven't passed already) let me know when you get to Chorley/Blackburn and hopefully I'll be able to make it down.
Oh man they're all so good. I've just watched the Total Rickall where it has all of Rick's 'catchphrases' in X^D But I love Jerry he steals the show! Heading to Chorley, should get there by Wednesday night.
Was that some Kill Roy on the soundtrack?
10 points!! I own 1/4 of the copyright so...
I want to do this with my life :(
did you say your lister struggle with the tide?
It’s just not really built for speed that’s all!
they are a trouble free engine , great machines.
Do you pay for your water along the canal.
It’s part of the license fee but some marinas do charge for it
Hi I'm doing the skipton Leeds Liverpool canal I'm 9th July 2018 any tips and pubs and food me wife sister in law and brother in law we need edvice first time on narrow boat
Hi Shaun! Have you watched my other vlogs about the canal? It’s all there! 8^)
Yes thanks
The Baltic Fleet is a grand old dock road (Real Ale) pub in Liverpool and is just across the road from The Wapping Dock.
Really enjoying your videos Robbie!, you should definitely try make it to the Lancaster canal it's lovely I'm from a small town called Garstang and the canal runs right through here I walk on it every day (not the water I'm not that good) on the way to work it's stunning. If you have chance check out some of my pictures on Facebook search for a page called "AlongTheTowpath", Ive been looking at buying a boat and your vids are helping a lot , take care keep them coming!.
Will do one day! Glad videos are helping. I don't really use Facebook, just had a google search and it didn't come up, welcome to post the link here if you want. We went through Garstang after visiting Barton Grange on the way up to Glasson Dock and Tewitfield. All looked really nice, what a great part of the world to live in.
Robbie Cumming lovely stuff!! facebook.com/AlongTheTowpath/?fref=ts , cheers.
Hi Lewis, my wife and I did the Lancaster Canal back in 1976. Loved Garstang. We live in Perth, Western Australia, have been back to the UK many times but still have a 3 month holiday cruising the cut on my bucket list.
Nice, well hopefully they will have extended by the time you get back over here for that! 8^D
Next time ...
Someone let the water out of Rufford Lake, they should've an Anti vandal lock on the sluice gates.
More cyclists on bridges please Robbie😉
Pump don't work 'cos the vandals took the handles!
Well that's just dumb to have those swing bridges operate on the other side where you leave your boat. That must be really annoying.
It is a bit! Thanks for watching cyberi4a 8^D
Unwatchable. Shaky camera. Can’t hear half of what is being said. Kevin Shelley is way better.
Go and watch him then 😂
I love canals but this guy is really grating on me. I can't watch anymore. Too much laughing at his own comments and childish antics. What a shame.
then dont watch !
Yeah, don't watch!
Rick Stebbings yeah don't watch!!
Lewis Croston thanks for the reply. Problem is when you reply I then find myself having to listen to this joker again!! Spare me please. I'm happy to stick with the excellent "cruising the cut"
Rick Stebbings hi Rick it's a shame to hear that so I won't reply after this, just a quick one though there is an old saying which goes "don't be a dick" , this guy has clearly put a lot of time into this video and it's not that nice if you comment slagging it off, so like I said you if don't like him don't watch it. Happy cranking !!!!!
