I'm sure everyday Stan wakes up he says a prayer. The lad has a rare cancer gene that has taken MANY of his family members. If I remember correctly, he and his mum both had their stomachs removed a couple yrs back. He had to learn how to bring his power back into his voice again after he recovered from his op. There is a documentary on his cancer journey on CZcams. He has a beautiful voice and I'm glad he could overcome his obstacles to continue to share his beautiful voice and down to earth nature with the world.

A few decades ago every party had Maori playing guitars, singing songs and they had huge beautiful voices. Maori had sort of adopted the reggae culture, especially after Bob Marley came to NZ, it was great. Then the 90's came and young Maori dropped the Rasta for gangster, east side vs west side, crips vs bloods, 2pac vs Biggie type culture. Was sad too see. House partys turned to shit thats for sure.

Stan Walker is a Maori from Aotearoa New Zealand ...He is the best of our contemporary Maori Singers ..... Most Maori and other Polynesians are awesome singers and we are natural at harmonies, B.V.'s and Choir Choral singing ... After we were visited and welcomed Bob Marley back in 1979 ... Bob Left a huge imprint on our music and messages - kaupapa (issues) music and the legacy he left with us on our music spawned borning of original awesome reggae music with kaupapa messages genre , into Aotearoa - NZ, to the point when other original Reggae Leaders/bands visiting Aotearoa - NZ these days are all impressed by the songs of our reggae bands compositions, performance of those songs musically and especially our harmonic vocals we get these gifts through our culture and our ancestors with several polynesian and western - English languages. Hip Hop Rap is a current addition by our artists especially in all our languages ... !! Mean az!! Our Reo Māoori is currently booming throughout NZ as our culture was based upon Haka and Chanting .. an oral tradition. !! The B.V.'s that are impressive to us backing Stans Lead Vocal enhances the total harmonic, the Wairua - SOUL , the power and beauty of his cover version of Kanye West's Song UltralLight Beam!

Its a polynesian thing. Aotearoa (New Zealand) is pretty much the capital for all the polynesian countries like Fiji, Tonga, Niue, Cook Islands, Rarotonga, Samoa etc. Christianity was bought to the Pacific during colonisation and is stuck ever since. The style of singing however is all Polynesian. We just sing a lot about Christianity and spirituality.

Awesome Charlie, It's always a little surprising yet exciting to see our kiwi artists receiving some air time beyond our tiny little country. We're very proud of the quality of music we've developed through decades of influence from US & UK music and Uncle Bob (Marley) when he toured NZ in 1979. Our sound is a fusion of RnB, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Blues and Gospel wrapped in Island/Reggae vibes backed up with great vocals and that throwback sound we all miss and love from today's music. Kiwi's just prefer real music sung by real vocalist and played by real musicians. Thank you for sharing our music and artists with your followers and the rest of the world. Some suggestions -

Greetings Charlie from Canada - I am a Canadian Kiwi and I ABSOLUTELY love, love, love Stan Walker - he is an extremely special human being - God has kissed his vocal chords! :-) The soulful sounds coming out of NZ are predominantly the Maori singers. They have such rich voices - somewhat like the Hawaiians dare I say it. As well, the Tongan and Samoan singers have beautiful voices as well. I don't think it is about the singers all having been trained in church so much as it is the fact that these races are deep rooted in spirituality and reverence for the sacred and the beautiful in life. Teeks is a great example of this as is Holly Smith. Parson James, one of Stan's collaborators also a fabulous voice ... same as Tiki Tane, another Maori singer. I am so glad you have experienced the thrill of listening to
Stan and his band of merry minstrels. The same can be said of the female vocalists. They have the deep soul voices you could easily mistake for black women singers. Listen to
While The Cat's Away - all girl band. Ardijah another great band. :-)

Stan delivered that song beautifully n I really like his version. What a voice first heard him sang Purple Rain, he changed the tune n it was the best cover that I've heard so far. His voice I'm speechless whatelse to say? The man is so talented. Love it he slayed both Lyrics. Kia Ora to the Kiwi Land very proud of him.

We grow up singing in culture groups training and then compete over days against title holders in our own language, that’s our gospel but the skill levels come from the Maori language so someone like Stan has developed powerful pronunciation due to duel linguistic capabilities.
So in short the Maori language is actually a discipline to our children.

You aren't kidding about, "Wow, What a voice"! I have been obsessed with his music, for around 3 years or so now. All the New Zealand artists I have encountered, really, people around me would wonder @my sanity, that's how intensely I have been following the music of Ladi6, Fat Freddy's Drop, Maisey Rika, Ruia Aperahama, Scribe, etc., etc... There is such a shed load of talent there, that is exciting, how I wish it were more accessible. But Stan, as they say, is the MAN! I am so grateful for his voice and that he was able to learn how to sing again after his operation. Dodged a bullet there. I could literally go on and on, but you get the idea. Thanks for giving his music a review. Cheers!

Thank you for acknowledged that our lives need to matter. This is what unity is! Just a bit of information. This song is a kanye west cover. And this artist also overcame stomach cancer. He was afraid he would not sing the same, but he came back with the vengeance. God is good.
