Stan is 100% self taught. He is however a very religious person. I am not sure how much time he spent singing in churches but he is Maori, and we tend to spend a lot of time singing on the marae and amongst all our cousins. Most maoris (like all pacific islanders) can sing to some extent and I think that stems from all the waiatas (songs) we learn as kids growing up. Mainly maori songs played on the guitar.

Hey Mr Boyd you might a,so be interested to know Stan sings without a stomach after an operation due to stomach cancer. He is an amazing survivor who just lets the spirit flow through him when he sings. A blessing to us all ❤❤❤❤❤

stan is a national treasure in NZ thanks for doing this man. I just got stevie knight too react too this song now you doing it. your a legend. had the pleasure of meeting him on a couple occasions in my own home town. cant get a more down too earth guy. but he can also sing with the best of them. I suggest his amazing grace cover next 😄😄P.s yes he has a church background but not the kinda church your use too over here we call it a "Marae"

Stan’s a national treasure in Aotearoa, NZ. But his personality makes you feel like he’s one of the cuzzys (cousins) he’s so humble, down to earth & funny! I attended a church service once where he was a special guest and he kindly asked everyone, please don’t take photos of me I’m happy to do that after church but for now we’re in the house of God so let’s keep our focus on him… like who does that? No one! He’s been one my most fav artists ever since ❤ And what you hear is exactly how he sounds in live performances too

Most Maori and other Polynesians are awesome singers and we are natural at harmonies, B.V.'s and Choir Choral singing ... After we were visited and welcomed Bob Marley back in 1979 ... Bob Left a huge imprint on our music and messages - kaupapa (issues) music and the legacy he left with us on our music spawned borning of original awesome reggae music with kaupapa messages genre , into Aotearoa - NZ, to the point when other original Reggae Leaders/bands visiting Aotearoa - NZ these days are all impressed by the songs of our reggae bands compositions, performance of those songs musically and especially our harmonic vocals we get these gifts through our culture and our ancestors with several polynesian and western - English languages. Hip Hop Rap is a current addition by our artists especially in all our languages ... !! Mean az!! Our Reo Māoori is currently booming throughout NZ as our culture was based upon Haka and Chanting .. an oral tradition. !! Not exactly he is from New Zealand but was discovered on Australian Idol, he has some great songs, he also beat cancer a few years back.

Speaking as a Maori, in our Maori culture we have a deep love, respect and spiritual connection to God, our family and our land (again in a spiritual capacity first before physical). Song is very much embedded into our culture (like many) which tells stories, bonds family to each other and many other purposes. Rhythm and song like African Americans, is very much in us, not taught, is a natural part of our being. Of course some are more blessed and talented than others, like Stan Walker, the backup vocalists and musicians witnessed here, who are outstanding! Gospel beliefs are very much paralleled to our culture, hence the spiritual depth he/they manifest through their beautiful performances and selves. They are connecting naturally through accomplished singing etc, but it is more an intense positive feeling/emotion you experience before you can analyse the physical performance itself, that is gospel, spiritual experiences that connect with your soul that are truely uplifting through the medium of song and the blessed talent.

He's a fellow kiwi (New Zealander....not the fruit😊) Amazing Grace/I surrender should be next on your list. Gospel is only one side of his music. There is more...try "Bigger" for example. He has an amazing back story...from a difficult abusive childhood to stomach cancer and surrender to God...an absolutely talented inspiration ❤

He is Maori bro. We sing and dance. Its in our culture, we grew up singing. Every function (bday funeral wedding, get togethers, parties etc) our whole culture is focused on song and dance.
I originally thought this was a cover rendition of Kanye Wests version. He is from a place called New Zealand. He is a naturally talent gifted self taught singer. Who won Australian Idol back a few years ago. Welcome to hearing just one of our home grown artists. Unfortunately the algorithms in CZcams you will not stumble across this on your own.
