Dave is the Bob Ross of woodblock carving
My brother met you in that very room a couple of days ago and bought a print. I'm jealous !
Were you busy, returning some videotapes?
@@carlweathers5714 We understand that reference.
Fastest click of my life, received a woodblock print recently and LOVE it! :) Late Merry Christmas from the states, wish you and yours the best!
Bought myself two ukiyoe heroes prints at twitchcon! They're currently the most beautiful things hanging up in my dorm! Thank you so much!
just discovered you randomly and already hooked. so cool that you're so fluidly shepherding this ancient art form into modern times via twitch, patreon and so on.
Merry Christmas Dave!
Happy Christmas Dave!
Perfect video to chill out in bed, at the end of a busy day
I was wondering yesterday when a new video was going up. Thanks!
It’s funny how this year’s ‘Japan Journey’ collection happens to coincide with me travelling to Japan for the first time! I’ll be having a journey of my own from West to East and I’ll make sure to visit your shop when I eventually make it to Tokyo this Spring!
You're like the Bob Ross of woodcarving, a pleasure to listen to.
This subscription sounds like the best so far!! Very exited for this! Good luck!
Love the new series, Dave. Can’t wait.
It’s the lining up of the prints on the blocks that really impressed me
Notification squad. Hope you had a great holiday David!
I'm very excited for this series. If every print is as gorgeous as this one then it's going to be incredible.
Absolutely beautiful work David
Instantly subscribed. It was such a great experience visiting your shop and meeting you in person. The two Hasui prints and your Great Wave print I bought arrived in best condition and are now proudly displayed in my home :-) Really looking forward to this new series!
How interesting, I too bought two Hasui prints and his great wave a few weeks ago from the shop. Great minds and all that
Beautiful work. I think you really hit the mark,. Hope to get a print.
I'm doing it this year. Love the concept.
I'm happy I found your channel David!
You keep my brain working just by listening to things you have to say about woodblock printing, so thank you!
I just signed up for the subscription today. Thank you for all of your hard work Dave. I hope this is a good year for you.
YESSSSSS!!!! ANOTHER UPLOAD!!! I've been checking the channel every few days for months hoping you guys uploaded again and I missed it! So glad you're back! Merry Christmas!!!
This is going to be a beautiful series!
The amount of work that goes into these prints are incredible. Amazing work.
Amazing, can't wait to visit your shop in March!
I greatly enjoyed tuning in on some days to watch the carving of this January design! Definitely looking forward to the other designs.
Yet another fantastic video. 👏 love the channel and work. Your craftsmanship, enthusiasm and presentation are awe-inspiring. When I have some spare money I will purchase one of these beautiful items! Keep up the good work team bull 😎
I spent the first years of my life in Japan- your print block of New Year's reminds me of my earliest memories of the Snow Festival in Yamagata- a winter full of warmth.
I would like to thank the CZcams algorithm for recommending me this channel, the most interesting thing I’ve seen on CZcams in a very long time, really good stuff
Saw this on your Instagram. Wow, just wow.
Nice to see you keeping things fresh, Dave.
I’d love a David Bull print...one day. I’d love to attend a workshop with David and learn everything I can about carving a block[s] to print...one day inshallah.
IN SH ALLAH 🙂
You people are obsessed with sky man 🤣
@@jtaco4101 How about you stop desrespecting other people's beliefs for no reason?
@@jtaco4101 I've been contacted by that sky man a lot of times , yee of little faith.
You're back!! Was just saying to myself the other night that I haven't seen a David Bull video in a while.
As a Koitsu fan this is really exciting. I look forward to seeing more videos in this series. Beautiful first print, and the box/stand is a really good idea.
Happy holidays David and everyone at Mokuhankan
The new series sample looks beautiful and serine.Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
I'm so excited!
I was about to sleep! Now I have to watch the whole thing
This looks like a highly interesting series, a nice departure from the previous prints revolving around gaming, really bringing Japan into homes worldwide. I also find it really interesting what you said about the work being 'tedious.' It seems to me that this is what separates designers from craftsmen - not just within printmaking, but many other fields. You have the naturally creative, who wish to manifest their imagination, and you have those who take pleasure in the process of making it happen. It also seems like these don't often overlap - you said yourself that you didn't feel so passionately about designing prints (before you separated it from the carving process). I, myself, know for definite that I am more of a designer; my passion is always directly linked to my creativity. I too would probably find carving quite monotonous. However, that doesn't stop me from admiring the skill and care you put into your work. Thanks for another great video!
A great Christmas present!
Wonderful to watch you work
So lovely! I hope these are available on your online shop soon.
The web site is ready ... mokuhankan.com/subscriptions/
The master returns!
Looks like a wonderful subscription. I signed up immediately!
TIL I need to watch your Twitch streams. Carving looks like SO much fun...
I love David Bull! His voice is so soothing and I'm able to fall asleep so easily!
His craftsmanship and work product are incredible, too. It's great to see someone who really cares about his craft.
Please forgive my ignorance. I don't mean any disrespect. I really have a burning question:
Does Jed Henry have the more skill-related job, whereas David has the more labor-intensive job?
From my narrow view, it seems that it takes more technical skill to design the artwork in the first place. But it seems it just takes time, patience and following a routine to carve and print.
I guess what I'm saying is this: I can't do what Jed Henry does but David makes me feel like I can do what he does.
And maybe that's just because he's so good at what he does, so he makes it look easy. That's what a professional does. A professional makes something look incredibly easy. So I'm aware that could be the case here.
Can someone please help me understand?
Again, I don't mean to discount David's work or expertise. I'm just trying to understand if it's more than just following Jed's lines with a blade.
I feel like I'm misunderstanding how technical David's job is, but I just don't know what I'm misunderstanding.
Thank you and happy new year to everyone!
Thank you for posting!!!
Finally! Merry Christmas everyone!
I’m new to the channel but the art seems amazing and I’m very interested to see where it goes, I also love the relaxing tone of the channel and hope to see more videos !!
Some day Im going to watch all your videos. !
Love your work thank you
I need this subscription!
Would love to stop at your shop one of these days. I’ll make it my duty to stop by when I visit Japan.
for some unknown reason youtube unsubscribed me . But i'm back and enjoying the videos you put out
Merry Christmas! :)
Jed is such a super talented & creative artist.
Cool video! Thanks, Dave!
We love you David Bull!
Now this is a wonderful holiday gift! Hope you're doing well Dave.
Your subscriptions are probably going to drop from what the characters subscriber numbers were but don't be thinking that you're loosing everyone. It was bound to happen. I'll be glad to continue my support in any way I can. Just keep doing what you do even if it's only one person left.
Well, so far it's looking to be the other way around ... we have received a number of subscription requests from people who like woodblock prints, but who weren't so excited about the game theme ... And also, we're not doing this for the short term; our blocks last a very long time, and we'll be issuing all these sets for a long time to come!
Merry Christmas dave!
YES!!! HE’S BACK! #epicchristmasgift
What a wonderful idea for a series and just how promising it looks! Then again, nothing else is ever expected of you, great great work to you and your staff :)
On a private note: I inherited a set of woodcutting knives and chisels from my grandpa. Some of them Kirsch some other brands I do not know (I'm German). They are in perfectly clean shape and actually still sharper than anything I ever used. My question is: should I try sharpening them at all once they get dull or leave it to someone who knows his craft? I am absolutely an intro level carver and sharpening is where I know the least. I want to use the tools, sure, but I would be incredibly sad if I ruined them..
Thank you so much for everything you upload and comment on this and other websites, and enjoy this last week of January - according to the calender I am using at least, hehe.
Thank you for these videos. Free education, as it should be.
Are you going to continue for a full year in Japan? That would be massively interesting, in another video you talked about how art gets changed by history and changes history. I was curious if you think about that video when you create each month. A snapshot of current Japan perhaps 🤷♂️
Maybe good idea is sand cuting part with sand paper, to remove knife marks?
Wonderful new project
You're amazing
Think the series looks amazing but sadly I can't risk getting hit with 12 VAT fees for them due to the excessive mark up the postage service levies on that so I'll have to wait until 2020 when I can order all the prints at once. Great work Dave!
Looks good, some scenes of modern Japan (e.g. salarymen, familymart, trains, etc...) in ukiyo-e style would be cool
Finally!
"/Smashing/ designs"
Hehehe, you're the best Mr. Bull!
Where have you been Dave!!! We've missed you good Sr!
finally a new one!!! yay!
Yayyyyyy! New video 😁😁
Merry Christmas Sir
David, I found your video among my recommendations, probably because I have been looking up wood sculpting videos. But I have always been a fan of Japanese art, and I want to get into this art. Is there any way or guide to start? This art is beautiful
Mr. Bull have you ever considered making prints centered around the game Omori? The game’s style reminds me a lot of your prints! Omocat is the game creator, and their art is quite beautiful.
Long time no see, man!!!
A Christmas miracle!
I could warm my hands from the glow of that print! Amazing! $45 is a great price! Any idea how much the shipping to USA might be?
All the information you need is on the web page shown in the video: mokuhankan.com/subscriptions/subscribe.php Thanks for the interest!
finally got rid of the gaming theme... love it
We're not 'done' with the gaming theme - it has been _very_ important to the growth of our business, and the continuation of this tradition - but it doesn't hurt to spread our wings a bit wider now and then! :-)
Have you considered making prints of Miyamoto Musashi ?
What is the significance of the container of water beside the light? Is it a makeshift lens? A ballast for the bulb? I'm confused and intrigued. I tried googling lamp with water next to it and other variants but came back dry. Please David, let me know what the purpose of the water is. I feel like I have to know.
This question come up without fail during every single live stream ... Luckily, I don't have to answer it on those occasions, because the other viewers soon jump in to do so. It diffuses the light from the bulb, leaving no shadow of the carving knife to disturb the view of the lines to be cut ...
@@seseragistudio thanks for the reply and apologies for asking it. I don't watch the twitch streams so I'm not aware it was a bothersome topic for you. I admire your work and attention to your craft.
anyone else think that thinks it would be amazing if David Bull made a japanese version of the Flammarion woodcut? (Used famously on the cover of The Discoverers.)
It's has been quite sometime since your last video, hope all is well with you.
OH MY GOD, IT'S THE NEW BOB ROSS!!!!!
16:09 Not possible David
Have you ever considered streaming when you're carving out a block on CZcams or a platform like Periscope?
www.twitch.tv/japaneseprintmaking/
@@seseragistudio Thank you for the link!
Also at around 14:02 is the work on the second from left person an imperfection in the paper or did a hair fall on the block during proofing?
I can't afford the prints right now, will these be available indefinitely? I'd really like to have this collection.
Yesss
So good. Question: at 19:13 there's an de/embossed scales pattern on the Yoshi dinosaur...? Or is it just painted to look 3D but isn't? What's that called? How achieved? Why used so rarely? (edited: fixed the timestamp)
Ummm ... are you perhaps commenting on the wrong video?
@@seseragistudio Oh, sorry, I meant 19:13. Thanks for the quick reply!🙏
@@xamishia It's simple embossing (karazuri), printed from a carved block that has no pigment applied.
@@seseragistudio Thanks. So the embossing is there for the color blocks too, it's just obscured by color? Or is the rubbing much harder for karazuri?
What's the trick to get all the layers lined up when printing?? I've never understood how to get them all lined up 😅
They have registration marks in the corner of all their wood blocks, from the key block to all different colour blocks, so the same paper just need to be aligned in that registration mark.
Do you have to take and pay each month when u subscribe, or can you decide not to pay for a month if you dont like one of the pictures from a subscription?
The point of the subscription is to take them all (in that set); we don’t sell these prints individually. The reason behind this is to create a business model that allows me to ‘guarantee' to my staff that I will actually be able to pay them each month … something I can’t do based on fluctuating shop sales ...
Curious haven't seen that metal sim used before, is it just to help hold the block down while keeping hands clean?
It's used to avoid pigments from bleeding into the registry guidelines (basically carved sections on the woodblocks to guide and secure the paper during phases of printing)
And here I was today wondering what happened to David these past few months and this video pops up
Bob Ross 2.0
Put my name on the list
I really don’t know how to subscribe, I’ve been looking on your website but I can’t find anything that asks a payment or anything
Subscription information is in the 'Show more ...' of the video page. But here is our information: mokuhankan.com/subscriptions/index.html
