2023 Series Announcement - Part 1

- In this video, Tokyo-based woodblock printmaker Dave Bull announces his workshop's new series for 2023.
(A note on the audio issue that is bothering many people: I did carefully produce the audio track, recording it separately, then editing it to remove unwanted noise, etc, and properly getting it compressed and normalized. But at the time of exporting the project, I neglected to mute the original camera audio, and this is what caused the echoed/reverby effect. CZcams doesn't let us edit the audio for uploaded videos, so there isn't anything I can do at this point ... Thank you for your patience with me!)

For people who need a 'carving fix' right _now_, you can always see plenty of such work over on our Twitch channel, both 'live' and 'replay':

David - years ago you told a story, on one of your Twitch streams, of knowing a Japanese paper maker. Would you ever consider telling that story again for your CZcams channel? It was an awesome story and I loved hearing you tell it. I’d love to hear it again.
He should do the story about the block maker/planer as well
I don’t remember that one off the top of my head, but I agree! I want to hear any of the stories that he’s willing to tell and archive here.
I think more access to stories like those is a wonderful thing. Especially in today’s world where so much story telling is a fast, flash in the pan type type of content on reels and shorts. Not to say I think those are all bad per se, but I love that David’s videos are longer videos. It feels like bringing the old and new together. Yes, it’s a CZcams video archived on the internet. But it feels like sitting down with a person who has lived far longer than me in a life far different than mine. Just a chance to slow down, learn, and experience.
Love to hear it
i think we're all in agreement that David could tell any story and we would be waiting for the notification. "David Bull describes the time he clogged a toilet at a dinner party: 1.2m views."
he does have !
Never clicked faster!
Probably never found that one special porn from the past 😂
That’s amazing that you’re collaborating with the British Museum, congratulations!
I can't stress enough how much I love following these series of printmaking. There's nothing like it, and I'm glad you share it with us all!
I just realized that this channel technically falls under the Lost Media genre (which I like) and Dave and his Mokuhankan team are taking their steps further by recovering, preserving, and reviving precious lost art so they can be appreciated by today's and tomorrow's generation. That being said, I'm absolutely looking forward to this project!
I'm not sure it was ever "lost" 😄😂 The old publishers are today publishing contemporary woodblock prints of very high quality e.g. Adachi or Watanabe. Hundreds, if not thousands, of artists are today self carving and printing, many at higher quality than 100 years ago e.g. Tachihara Inuki (ukiyo-e) or Miyamoto Shufu (shin-hanga) or Paul Binnie (contemporary).
I recently visited your shop with some friends, I was the one who bought the "cheap thrill" and the hiroshige! You tested me on the eight veiws depictions. I just wanted to leave this comment to say thank you for your kindness while I vistited! I hope to visit you again soon before I leave Japan. My friends will tell you I was truly starstruck after meeting you! Can't wait for the next video :)
You have spent a lifetime studying, practicing, trying to save a beautiful art form; now, you've become the treasured.
I went to visit this exhibition earlier this year after getting into Japanese prints precisely because of this channel. Now mokuhankan are producing these very same prints. Full circle! Thank you so much Dave!
Just seeing David’s face makes one happy without reason. Great news of my day is this. New video 🎉
This is amazing news! Can't wait to see the end result (and of course the process)
David is one of the youtube GOATs, every video is so good
As a student of Japanese art and a professional carver, I appreciate your knowledge and explantion of various aspects of woodblock prints. I obtained an excellent volume comprised of drawings by Hiroshige of everyday life some of which were projected to be part of a print. I share your love of this wonderful discipline. Your passion and love for the art will shine forth in any project you undertake. Best wishes from Virginia, Cork Camden
We are watching a legend carving his way into art history. He will be up there, among great ugiyoe craver and printer, as a modern revisionist who brought so much joy to the world. Gentlemen, ladies, subscribe to him as if u are given a chance to subscribe to Hokusai.
There's nothing better than seeing someone, who is truly wholeheartly passionate about something, sharing info about it.
I watch some of your videos fro time to time and it fills me with joy.
In a world so full of "everything" and that moves so fast with technology, news, apps, etc... and where people tend to be a little lost about what they like becouse they have too many options out there, it certainly is nice to see someone so passionate, well versed and meticulous about what they love, specialy something so artistic.
Thank you so much for sharing, for taking the time to set up the camera and record and for letting us know and learn about a technic that may be difficult to know about living in countries other than Japan.
(Excuse my English, I'm a Spanish speaker)
Blessings and lots of love from Argentina!
Dave I can not tell you how much I look forward to your videos and stories. I glad to see you are doing well. Best wishes for the holiday season from Charlotte, NC.
As a Canadian this must be even a bigger deal for you! So excited for you Dave! Can’t wait to get my hands on one of these!
Great challenge! I'm sure you and your team will pull this off ☺️ By the way, thank you for documenting your work the way you do: not only is it very enjoyable to watch, it's also a valuable source of information.
You'll crack it Dave, and I look forward to what you will achieve. Best wishes.
Firstly, it's wonderful to see you happy and well Dave. I think this project is so interesting, you've always represented a bridge from the past to the future. You're a programmer, but found woodblock carving. You're using modern technology in your process, but documenting techniques that haven't changed for hundreds of years. It's really fascinating! I wish you and the whole team nothing but the absolute best as always ❤❤❤
David, I have every confidence in your team's ability to complete this project wonderfully.
Wouldn’t normally respond like this. But let’s f**** go, really stoked for this
aw that's so sweet. I like that you went to his memorial. I look forward to getting this subscription!
What great news! I had actually pre-ordered this book "of everything". Can't wait to see this almost scientific cooperation.
Thank you for sharing I love what you do, it's absolutely fantastic.
David this is fantastic! Can’t wait to see how well these turn out. All the best from Toronto!
This is such an amazing project. I am definetly looking forward to seeing the results. Much love for you and your staff's passionate work on bringing beautiful works of art like those into as many people's hands as possible and moreover turning them into a new expression of artistry in the form of your wood block prints themself. PS: highly appreciate the little tidbit at the end ^^
This will be a truly historic project 🙏
Can't wait to see what the future holds. Great video as always
Such a pleasure to see you in a good health, David!
Your stories and craft are kinda safe heaven in todays crazy world.
Greetings from Russia, hope to visit you one day in your shop 🙌🏻
Visited your shop today during a family trip to Tokyo. Bought a beautiful print to bring back to the US.
I WANT one of Mokuhankan's prints. The next and first time I'll be visiting Japan I'll buy some and hopefully see you!
In the meanwhile (beeing a student with no money for luxorious prints) I'll try to make my own prints instead.
I have carved my first ever woodblock print on some plywood! The block is all bendy and not suitable, but it actually worked and i have a print of the keyblock!! Next is color 😁
Thank you and your community for beeing awesome and sharing your process and visions! 🥰
He’s back!! I’ve missed your videos so much! Hope you’ve been doing well! :) can’t wait to see what videos you bring to the channel next! One of my favourite creative channels on CZcams!
If there was every any unintentional ASMR this is it, awesome vids! Relaxing and Informative
So great to see you again and congrats with the new project! Looking forward to see the videos!
This is exciting! Can't wait for the next installment.
Very excited to see episodes as they come out! I've rewatched the great wave a few times at this point!
I was just at the British museum 3 weeks ago! Incredible!
It was wonderful coming to the shop and picking up my little bonsai print!... you really are in the thick of it there in Asakusa... terrific. I was really inspired to see Hokusai's paintings when I visited Obuse too together with his amazing Pheonix in Ganshohin temple. It was a wonderful story to hear how he walked to Obuse from Tokyo. Looking forward to walking along with you as this series rolls out.
i don’t think anyone has mentioned how PROUD of yourself you should be! as a fan i sure am
That's very exciting news! My imagination is running away with what this series will be like!
I'm soooo looking forward to the coloured versions of the scanned files
Wooohooo! I saw the Hokusai exhibition of these drawings at the British Musuem - so exciting to imagine twelve of them as finished prints
This is great news. C'mon 2023!
Oh I'm so excited for what is to come!
I'm very excited for this series, I hope you can visit London and run some workshops here, I'd love to join!
I am so happy you are producing another series on CZcams! I can hardly wait to see this project come together. Thank you for sharing your work with us.
I am very excited for the new series, 2023 is going to be a great year!!
I’m excited, I have faith you can pull it off !
I am soooo excited!!!!
I am so excited about this project! David and your team, you are the only ones in the world who can pull this off! Looking forward for the upcoming updates, loved the whole Hokusai Great Wave series 🧡
Ирина здравствуйте,читала комменты...увидела ваш...Я только начинаю...хотела спросить, а вы ? Можете поделиться опытом?
Dave, regarding the audio....I think it's just the echo of the room. Perhaps putting the mike higher up on your shirt will help. In your Twitch stream, you are looking down a lot and the mike picks up your voice perfectly. I think in this case, it just needs to be higher. Otherwise, there's nothing terrible....we just love your voice so much that it's the only thing we want to hear!
Great to see you!
This is really exciting news! I hope we will be seeing the carving process in long form videos / twitch streams!
Exciting news! It was a pleasure and a privilege to pop in a few weeks ago when in Tokyo and be able to say a quick, "Hi".
Everybody gangster until Sensei Bull drops another vid!
It's always good to hear from you, David. My best wishes.
What an interesting opportunity! I look forward to seeing the fruits of your labor and research.
Can't wait!
Loved watching the festival, and their isn't a craftsman anywhere else in the world I would want to take on this task, good luck to you and your team!
If there’s anyone up for the challenge it’s you Dave!
So good to see a new video from you :) Hello from Canada.
Whoa! Awesome!!!
Great to see you back online David. Look forward to the series.
so awesome to see you back
Hooray!
And all of a sudden Im really interested in this random topic that youtube showed me😊
DAVID!!!!! Big fan sir, love your videos! One of my favorite art series on CZcams, I look forward to your work.
Daaaaaaaviddddd! Soooo happy to see you again!
Thank you for sharing these videos!
Thank You Mokuhankan and Museum!
All best at work
Wonderful ! this is fantastically exciting ! Looking forward to seeing more videos and ... the PRINTS !!! Good Luck and thanks for making this possible !
Just stopped doing whatever I was doing the moment I got the notification. Great to see you back Dave!
very, very much looking forward to following mokuhankan's journey with this set
Hooray!!
loved the ending footage!
Always a pleasure Dave, have a wonderful 2023!
Wow congrats on the collab!
I am in ! Great !
LETS GOOOOOO DAVE
Such great news! Looking forward to this project!!
This is a fantastic idea! I cannot wait to get into this series.
Ahhhh man! Was just watching your video on The Meaning(s) of Life last night, and wondered when you'd release something else. My prayers have been answered!
I am glad you have this opportunity and that so many people will be able to see the beautiful work you produce, but the British museum should be paying you! Not the other way around! Royalties on public domain art??? To a museum with EXCELLENT funding? Why is a small business of crafts people paying the british museum for ANYTHING?
I just had to get that off my chest. I'm sure you thought about this decision long and hard and have your reasons... I'm looking forward to seeing the beautiful work you produce!
Enjoy these videos so much. I hope you are in good health and cant wait to see some more print videos. Happy Holidays, wishing best of health to you and your family.
I'm a minute in and I'm already stoked
Always a good day when you post a new video!
Welcome back !
Nice to see you again, and very excited for all of us with your project :) Greetings from Montreal
Wow! I am super excited for this project!!
This is exciting news David, Can't wait 'til i can subscribe to this project.
This is incredible news! I went to see these drawings on display at the British Museum a year ago and I was flawed to see the actual handiwork of Hokusai in front of me. I've followed you for years so to see this crossover is really special and I'm looking forward to their release.
Yaaay...
I like the room ambiance fwiw.
Looking forward to this Dave! See you back in the stream!
Was so happy to see an upload from you today!
What an awesome opportunity! Mokuhankan strikes again
This makes me really exited! I can't wait to see the next video, and the results of this amazing project!
Thank you! I am very excited for your new project and the videos--the Great Wave videos were wonderful as I waited for my prints! I'm looking forward to more challenges and discoveries in your next adventure, including seeing the staff and neighborhood again!
Fabulous!! Here's to 2o23!
This is great work. Just a polite reminder that Hokusai was a carver for many years. It's well documented in academic literature from eg. MFA and MIA. This seems to me fundamental to his and this story especially given Hokusai was also known to veto carvers not up to his standards.
I'll be going into this in one of the upcoming videos, probably Episode 3 ...
I find your content to be both informative and calming, looking forward to the new series.
