      @Josh Back when I was doing this 'all by myself', before running a payroll, I _did_ actually issue financial statements to the stakeholders (the print collectors). I published them in the same newsletter that I mentioned in the video. Here is an index to some of them (look for the Annual Reports): www.asahi-net.or.jp/~xs3d-bull/hyaku-nin-issho/index.html#anchor_reports

    Now that’s how to be a fantastic boss! You gave the opportunity and initiative to a part time employee to use their skills to address a challenge. Then you gave them the opportunity to consider an offer to become a more permanent member of your team, all the while making sure they thought the compensation was within the range they considered appropriate and fair!
    Being a boss is giving the tools and facilities to your employees to prosper! If they are given the support, and freedom to pursue growing their skills, you as a boss and business owner will more than be compensated for their dedication!
    The more you show and encourage a fantastic employee to grow and implement their vision, the more they are going to love their job and continue to improve. Most importantly giving a fantastic employee the support you clearly have, the better the both of you are going to individually be rewarded personally and financially!
    Congrats to both of you and your business! You deserve it!!!
    Thanks!

      @seseragistudio  Před 2 lety +55

      You make it sound like I was doing something ‘special’, but actually, I was simply trying to be _practical_ . During the time she has been here, Watanabe-san has learned a lot about us; she has worked with me on pricing the antique prints, and thus has open access to our bookkeeping - our costs, etc. She has a clear view of our financial situation - how much we are selling, spending, earning, etc. etc. She knows what I am making, and also where other members of the team stand.
      So when it came time for me to think about hiring her full-time, I tasked _her_ with trying to figure out what a fair compensation would be. She went out and scrunched a bunch of government statistics on what people are earning in similar jobs, at that age and experience level, and then simply put it all together for me. She thought it was fair; I thought it was fair. Done deal.
      This is _so_ much better than sitting down with somebody in a kind of Management/Employee ‘face-off’, one trying to pay less, one trying to earn more. No thank you on that!

    • @letthetunesflow
      @letthetunesflow Před 2 lety +28

      @@seseragistudio You would be stunned at just how rare of a trait that is! You are so kind to take no credit for being a great boss. Doing exactly that, (taking no credit) just shows how great of a boss you are!
      She really does deserve a huge congratulations and the credit for her amazing work! I’m glad you gave her the opportunity to continue full time! You are very lucky to have her!
      Fostering talent like this is exactly what an amazing business like yours, and your employees does that contributes to people coming back over and over again, on top of your amazing prints!
      Thank you to you and your staff again on 100k!
      P.S. I’m sorry if I made it sound, in anyway, that she didn’t deserve all the credit! She truly does! I’m just so happy to see an owner of a company like yourself running it in the way that you are, it is extremely rare to see.
      Please thank her for me in person, you are lucky to have her, and each other!

    Dear David bull, you are an absolutely wonderful human being. Most of the business leaders in the world are portrayed as very serious, cold, only concerned about the growth of their companies and nothing else. But you have the excitement and curiosity of a kid and a drive even more than a young man in his prime. When I first found your channel i cannot believe that someone can have such a deep insight of the buisness aspects and have that artistic sense at the same time. the audience watching your CZcams videos may not even be from the same country, but you speak to us as if we are friends for many years. The warmth in your voice makes us feel like we are being treated as a guest. You speak like a member of our family and take us on a little journey, explaining all the things that are happening in every video. I am sure managing a team is not an easy task, but from the results you showed to us it is evident that you have done a wonderful job. Apart from this I cannot admire enough of your dedication towards your art. You are not shy to try out new techniques and technologies(you may be the only wood block printer and carver who also does CZcams videos and twitch streams In my knowledge.) You may be one of the very few people who came out of the disastrous year of 2020 with success at hand and a smile on your lips. Your ability to turn crisis into an opportunity is nothing short of a miracle. I bow down to each and every one of your team for their effort to make this happen.
    Wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
    Wishing you and your team members a very long and happy life.

    I was a subscriber of the 200 "Scenes from Nature" print set from the off -- and wow, having received the Dragon print on Christmas Eve, I'm totally satisfied from my subscription over the year!
    Great carving, printing, the little stories behind the printing or carving in your off videos, it all adds up to a great collectable experience. Especially in the larger format, that and the repro of authentic designs, it was enough to make me convert from a video watcher to a video buyer! Subscribed this year, and I really have loved it!
    Wish you all the success with the 2021 series. The Matchlabel prints video is supremely interesting -- imagine in 100 years, if people are haggling on "Meta" for the authentic Dave Bull versions ;)
    Thanks again and best of luck in the coming New Year!

    Any mission critical supplies I would prioritize above anything, to make sure you are cultivating an alternative and a backup plan. Having a business that relies on something or someone that has no alternative is a business ending situation!
    Please hire or delegate someone to making sure that part of your business is taken care of! If that’s you or someone else that’s up to you! But don’t let something like that get swept under the rug!!! Having anything in a business relying on a single point of failure is a huge problem!
    So thinking about these business issues is absolutely critical like you have said. Those lessons you are talking about is your most important thing to focus on! Don’t get lost in the fun parts of the business! Get the backbone reinforced!
    Love your work and just want to see you continue to prosper!!!
    Congrats on the 100k your whole team really deserves it!!!
    P.S. I hope this didn’t come across demanding or telling you what to do. I just would hate for a single point of failure to effect you business, we all love you and your employees too much and their Amazing work!

    Lots of thoughts after following for a couple of years. It has been a real pleasure watching David and Mokuhankan pivot from the original business model in the midst of the pandemic with a flexibility that a lot of small business don't seem to want to welcome, and his plasticity in willing to learn new things as they come has really helped them grow (how many older business owners are creating/editing videos, streaming on twitch, etc). I know this is a big team effort and everyone is pulling their weight.
    Also it says a lot that people are bought into this very traditional and older art form and I think it's great. I myself don't have any art around my house save for a few prints from Mokuhankan and I think it shows that there is a real want for this, especially the *accessibility* of printing to people who want some really high quality physical art to share or display. I wasn't able to do last years subscription but I hope 2022 will be the year I sign up!

    I met you in 2017 and didn’t have enough money to buy some of the prints that I wanted. Since then I’ve gotten a pretty decent raise at work, and I can’t wait to visit your shop again whenever everything opens back up and buy some prints in person.

    In the spirit of naming each print series, I propose a global name for your entire body of work "Persistence In The Face Of Adversity." You are truly an inspirational person. And over the years, not only have I learned a lot about your craft, you've taught me what it means to be a decent, honest, hardworking, and caring human being.

      Something I read long long ago had quite some impact on me. It wasn't that it 'changed' anything in me; I was already 'who I was' I guess, but it certainly reinforced something inside. And now and then, when sometimes a decision needs to be made, I remember it, nod, and then move forward.
      I have no idea where it came from, but it goes something like this: "Live so that when your children think of fairness and integrity, they think of you."
      (And thank you for the kind comments!)

    Been watching since the Kickstarter in 2013. You and the staff at the shop are all awesome! Not sure if I should be happy or not that you're so successful that you're almost suffering from it. Prints for 2022 look great, and I'm excited to see the rest as well as how this change of format will turn out.

    Fun fact: stamp albums are usually made with acid free paper making them ideal for archiving these prints! Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵😷

      @seseragistudio  Před 2 lety

      I thought to too, but I did receive this email a few minutes ago: "With your matchbox prints I would very strongly suggest you offer storage guidance on PVC versus mylar etc. The cheap stamp albums use PVC and I have seen firsthand how storing in 1980s plastic turned to a thick gooey glue (imagine a thick nori that requires solvents to remove) completely destroying the paper." I'm going to have to look into it carefully.

    • @suzisaintjames
      @suzisaintjames Před 2 lety +1

      @@seseragistudio, 🤔 hmmm, while that is true, some people use books with plastic to collect stamps, according to the American Philatelic Society, stamps should be mounted to acid free paper with hinges or mounts. Those books with plastic sleeves aren't meant for archiving. They are meant to hold the stamps short term until you get around to mounting them in your permanent album. The one I thought you were showing has black cardstock, acid free paper and the only plastic may be in the cover. Nothing else. I guess you need to do a "short" to clarify. 💖🌞🌵😷
