- Rameshwaram to Thanjavur is 250 km distance, we decided to travel there via Karaikudi, which is the food & Culture capital of Chettinad region
In this video you will see India’s first vertical life sea bridge at Pamban, then Karaikudi local food and a visit to see the Chettinad architecture. We learnt about the luxury heritage property converted into a hotel ie Chidambara vilas there after we went to see the same.
Just in case if you have missed watching our previous Episode 4 of Dhanushkodi, the link of the video is below
• Ep-4 Dhanushkodi - Ram...
Description of the places visited by us on the 17th Dec 2024 tour of Rameshwaram to Thanjavur.
Pamban Bridge - Pamban bridge is at a distance of 10 km from Rameshwaram temple.
Pamban Bridge is a railway bridge that connects the town of Mandapam in mainland India with Rameswaram.
Length of railway bridge - 2.06 km
The new railway bridge is a vertical uplift from the centre to let the ships pass through.
Lunch at Karaikudi - We travelled 140 km from Rameswaram and reached Karaikudi which is famous for its “Chettinad Cuisines”. We had our Chettinad lunch at Priya Mess. This restaurant is famous for non-veg food.
After lunch, we explored Karaikudi with Mr Mandikandan ji (Tourism guide) He is a French teacher by profession and has an interest in Tourism as well.
Desotta Bakery - Then we headed towards one of the famous and oldest bakeries of Karaikudi - Desotta Bakery. We came to know that this bakery is since 1962. We tried some of the cake options there and that was all so delicious.
Cashew Cake - Rs 22 per piece
Honey Cake - Rs 22 per piece
Chettinad Houses - After this, we visited a village - Kanadukathan which is famous for Chettinad houses & its Architecture and we also saw a Chettinad Palace from the outside.
Handloom Weaving Centre - After this we visited the 100-year-old Handloom Weaving Centre also known as “Tamil Theri”.
We met the owner of this centre, Mr Venkatraman who is a major Chettinad Saree producer. Also visited their Saree Shop and bought one Chettinad Saree from there.
Saree Cost - Rs 1200
Chidambara Vilas - After this, we travelled 10 km and reached at Chidambara Vilas which is 120 years old heritage property.
We experienced an amazing view from the terrace of Chidambara Vilas & also understood the Chettinad architecture.

Chettiars became rich because they did business in south east asia during colonial times. Most of the hindu temples you see in Malaysia, Singapore, burma, Indonesia etc are build by chettiar community. Even some of the gopurams in meenakshi temple are build by tamil chettiar community. One thing missed is the entrance gate of chettiar house it has elaborate wood carvings and chettinad temples are also magnificent it will look very rich in inside.
yes - actually before this i was not aware about house architecture , all i knew that their food is famous...
@@visa2explore their food is famous because of the amalgamation of South East asian and local tamil cuisines. Two thousand years ago it is said that they had traded with romans, greeks, Chinese etc in the coastal city of poompuhar, after the early cholas time this city vanished due to cyclones and floods.
What is unique about the ingredients that go in Chettinad cuisine?
@@Manishsharmaseven9 chettinad cuisine uses most number of spices than any Indian cuisine, chettinad masala means it should have at least more than 10 spices. The unique blend of spices and curry leaves was first done in the chettinad cuisine, when you are doing a masala using heavy spices many don't add curry leaves as it dominates the flavour and fresh coconut is used instead of malai. Also the use of shallots and native ramnad/salem gundu chillies make it more unique. Chettinad cuisine has more than 1000 dishes.
Chettinad 360 chicken is in the menu here in North by the Tamil eateries serving Chettinad chicken dishes. I think there's minimal use of herbs and high on masala laden semi gravy chicken. Although, I never tasted assuming high level of heat from masala. If it's rich on flavors over heat. It can become a main attraction of evening snacking here. Where in your case is mostly a lunch dish. The people in North rejoice in dry snacking form rather as a main dish.
I am from Tamilnadu don't know so much about KARAIKUDI Thanks Harish Bali Sirfor wonderful coverage
जिसे ट्रॅव्हल करना पसंद है वह फर्स्ट नंबर पर सब तरह की जानकारी के लिये आपको ही प्राधान्य देता है! Thanks Harishji ! 🙏
Wow again a great episode. God bless you all. Om Sai Ram 🙌
The saree place was a new experience. This is something a very rare to watch. Wished, they also had men's wraps (Dhoti) in similar design to buy as souvenirs. The chettinad traditional welcome at chidambara vilas by Thangaraj was a nice gesture. Glad you kept a traditional welcome cloth worn throughout the visit. I think the smell of bricks on top of the Vilas architecture during the monsoon would be a refreshing and unique experience.

Great Chettainad houses. One more very special, interesting, informative and special episode
Chettiars are typically have hand woven saree business for generations together and are very prosperous people. Karaikudi and Chettinaad food is mostly non veg only. Houses are huge and like palaces only. It was pleasure watching this episode. Very interesting indeed. Pudding 🍰 cake looked 😋👌👌🌹🌹 👍

Heard a lot about the Chettinad region of TN , thanks a lot for showing this region, it's cuisine, it's houses and architecture.
Ten years back I had been to Pudukkottai on way to Thanjavur from Rameshwaram, just like you are...
Had veg lunch at a hotel, it was rice rice and rice only but was so tasty that never thought about chapati..
And believe me the people at that place couldn't speak Hindi or English, we interacted with gesture and by showing what the other people around were eating 😂
When we mentioned that we are from Maharashtra....
Believe me --- they asked about Balasaheb Thackeray...
