  • Thanjavur is known for its rich history and culture and is home to the Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Distance from Madurai to Thanjavur - 185 km.
Just in case if you have missed watching our previous Episode 5 of Rameswaram to Thanjavur, the link of the video is below.
    Link - • EP-5 Pamban Bridge | ...
Description of the places visited by us on the 18th Dec tour of “A day in Thanjavur”.
Brihadeeswara Temple - We started our day in the morning at the world-famous UNESCO World Heritage site Sri Brihadeeswara Temple.
The Brihadeeswara Temple is located in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. This temple is very ancient and dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple was built in the 11th century by the King Raja Raja Cholan.
Architecture of this temple is a good example of Chola architecture and execution.
It took Chola king only 6 years to complete the entire construction of this temple.
We also noticed there is a big statue of Nandi Ji carved out of a single stone. The height of the Nandi is 3.65 m, 5.94 m long and 2.59 m broad. The weight of the Nandi is 25 tons.
Then we had the darshan of Lord Shiva at the main temple. We had Darshan of “Shiv Lingam” Munshi Ji told us that this is a 12 feet shiv lingam and the weight is 12 tons.
Temple remained closed from 12:30 Pm to 4:00 pm
Guide Info - We explored the Brihadeeswara Temple with experienced guide Mr Munshi Ji.
Best time to visit - November to December is the best time to visit Thanjavur Temple, and if you are coming in summer it’s best you visit the temple in the Evening from 4 - 5 pm so that you can do darshan at the temple and in the evening you can experience the temple lighting as well.
Lunch near temple - After this, we had lunch at Sri Krishna Bhavan Restaurant, We had Veg South Indian thali. This was a Pure veg restaurant.
Thanjavur Palace - Then we headed towards Thanjavur Palace
Entry Ticket - Rs 25 per person
This palace is located just one km away from the Big Temple and has served as an important centre for both the Nayak dynasty and the Maratha kingdom. it was built by the Nayaks around 1550 AD and later expanded on by the Marathas between 1676-1855, and thus, is also known as the Maratha Palace.
Today, this palace has been transformed into a museum where visitors can observe old excavation statues on display.
Then we visited the Saraswathi Mahal Library, where we saw many manuscripts written on palm leaves in different languages.
After this, we ended our day
Hope you like this “A Day in Thanjavur” Episode

It is a mystery still on how the "logistics "of the Chola period worked out or how 'advanced' our Hindu Kings were, that they used "Elephant" to transport "granite" in the temple site while we are still struggling to transport nowadays using "Containers"!Radhe Radhe Harishji!Thank you for showing interest in the graphic development of Tamil language.
Brihadeshwara temple is example of our heritage legacy when it reached its 'peak' and proving any Science is part of the 'Sanatan'!🙏

Hi Harish: Very nice video of the Thanjavur Brihadeeswara Temple. This temple is an architectural wonder and it is a testament to the builders that it is still standing tall, after a thousand years. Early on when you asked what the Nayak king was wearing on his head, the guide mentioned "kreedam" meaning a crown. I believe the army of celestial beings under Lord Shiva are called "Shiv Ganas" (pronounced "gaNaas").

I think you missed out three major points. I’m surprised that the tour guide didn’t mention.
    1. The viman of main temple is made of single granite with weight of 80 tonnes. It is still unknown how such huge stone brought at the top of the main temple and kept there.
    2. Entire temple structure is made of granite stones interlocking. In 1000 years, there were several earthquakes, tsunami, cyclones, floods passed by but it didn’t damage a single things in this temple.
    3. The main temple’s viman shade doesn’t fall on ground.
Last not the least, every temple across TN, you will find a demon face with half hands inside his mouth at top of every temple including Maa Meenakshi temple, Rameswaram temple, Brihadeswar temple, all 5 elements of creation Shiva temples, Ranganathswamy temple etc and most of houses (at top of the front gate or entrance).
His name is Krithi mukha, according to Shiva Mahapuran, the sages were disturbing Bhagwan Shiva when he was in medication. So, Bhagwan Shiva created this demon and asked to eat all of them after he ate all then he kept on asking what he will eat further, then Bhagwan Shiva told him eat yourself. He obeyed Bhagwan Shiva’s order Abd started eating himself. When Bhagwan Shiva saw him, he almost eat his entire body and only left with his face and both hands which he was eating.
Bhagwan Shiva gave him blessings that you will be worshiped at the top of every temple and houses.

During the reign of the Pallava dynasty (Tamil Kingdom) which ruled over the areas that currently belong to Andhra Pradesh and northern Tamil Nadu, the Telugu language was not in use. It was only after the 9th century that the Telugu language started to gain prominence and became a widely spoken language in the Andra region. Tamil literature refers to Telugu language as a dialect with tougher pronunciations.

Thanks Harishji for your visit to Thanjavur. Most of the North Indian never visits this side. Mostly they will go Chennai, Kanjeevaram,Mahabalipuram,Madurai,Rameshwaram and Ooty and go to Bangalore. This side of Tamil Nadu having lot of Temples for your Prayers,Offerings,Architecture and Solution for your Karma short comings. I hope you will plan in future to bring out our Heritage to all. Yes people may not talk in Hindi but we never fail to help our Visitors. Best wishes to you!
