Description of the places visited by us on the 18th Dec tour of “A day in Thanjavur”.
Brihadeeswara Temple - We started our day in the morning at the world-famous UNESCO World Heritage site Sri Brihadeeswara Temple.
The Brihadeeswara Temple is located in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. This temple is very ancient and dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple was built in the 11th century by the King Raja Raja Cholan.
Architecture of this temple is a good example of Chola architecture and execution.
It took Chola king only 6 years to complete the entire construction of this temple.
We also noticed there is a big statue of Nandi Ji carved out of a single stone. The height of the Nandi is 3.65 m, 5.94 m long and 2.59 m broad. The weight of the Nandi is 25 tons.
Then we had the darshan of Lord Shiva at the main temple. We had Darshan of “Shiv Lingam” Munshi Ji told us that this is a 12 feet shiv lingam and the weight is 12 tons.
Temple remained closed from 12:30 Pm to 4:00 pm
Guide Info - We explored the Brihadeeswara Temple with experienced guide Mr Munshi Ji.
Best time to visit - November to December is the best time to visit Thanjavur Temple, and if you are coming in summer it’s best you visit the temple in the Evening from 4 - 5 pm so that you can do darshan at the temple and in the evening you can experience the temple lighting as well.
Lunch near temple - After this, we had lunch at Sri Krishna Bhavan Restaurant, We had Veg South Indian thali. This was a Pure veg restaurant.
Thanjavur Palace - Then we headed towards Thanjavur Palace
Entry Ticket - Rs 25 per person
This palace is located just one km away from the Big Temple and has served as an important centre for both the Nayak dynasty and the Maratha kingdom. it was built by the Nayaks around 1550 AD and later expanded on by the Marathas between 1676-1855, and thus, is also known as the Maratha Palace.
Today, this palace has been transformed into a museum where visitors can observe old excavation statues on display.
Then we visited the Saraswathi Mahal Library, where we saw many manuscripts written on palm leaves in different languages.
After this, we ended our day

It is a mystery still on how the "logistics "of the Chola period worked out or how 'advanced' our Hindu Kings were, that they used "Elephant" to transport "granite" in the temple site while we are still struggling to transport nowadays using "Containers"!Radhe Radhe Harishji!Thank you for showing interest in the graphic development of Tamil language.
Brihadeshwara temple is example of our heritage legacy when it reached its 'peak' and proving any Science is part of the 'Sanatan'!🙏
Thanjavur is also famous for world renowned paintings sir 😊.
Sir, This Tamilnadu Travel Series is One of the top 5 best series in your Channel Visa2explore.all episodes are wonderful
Thanks Harish ji, we love your channel and content - you must get tourism award from Govt of India 👍
I felt that Thanjavur in itself needs two to three days... Especially Brihadeshwara Temple .. And the other two world UNESCO heritage sites... Also the famous Thanjavur paintings
Brihedeshwaar is a Magnum Opus Monument, it's magnificence can be felt only if one can visit this Extra ordinary Temple.....🙏🚩
Yeh tour mein maza nahi aaya Harish ji
@@Purvi71237 Purvi Ji, Places pasand aana aapne aap me ek contest hai, Harish Ji jo place visit kar rhe hai explore kar rhe hai or uski jankari de rhe hai wo ek bdyia kam hai, like mujhe history pasand hai food pasand hai so I like this series. Or sabhi series harish ji bhut efforts se bana rhe hai, So I respect him and his team.
Beautiful tour of Brihadeeshwara temple. Also beautifully explained. Enjoyed this tour. Extraordinary temple architecture.
108 is auspicious number in Jainism and Hinduism both.
Definitely there is connection between these religions.
Vrihadeswara Temple is a sculpture of High architecture splendor of thousand of years which will last long. The sculpture of Marco Polo in the temple campus is a wonder by itself. The museum consisting so many stone sculptures of the time shows the richness of stone carvings during the period ✌️
Harish ji, thanks for making us realize how dwarfed we are in front of time and history.
Thank u Harish ji. Because of u i have visited the famous Tanjavyr temple and came to know the richness of Hindu kindom in South India. ❤❤
Thank you so much Harish ji for covering the Ancient and such an important destination of Bharat that is Thanjavur.... I believe until now not many vloggers have covered this part & your among the first one to cover my Native place.... The temple is a great place to visit and worship🙏
Very magnificent architecture.one must be lucky enough to see this temple.
True
Harishji, as you said missed "Dharasuram" world heritage site.
It will take minimum 5 hours to know the intricacies of the temple.
Gangai konda cholapuram will be a great visit.
Hi Harish: Very nice video of the Thanjavur Brihadeeswara Temple. This temple is an architectural wonder and it is a testament to the builders that it is still standing tall, after a thousand years. Early on when you asked what the Nayak king was wearing on his head, the guide mentioned "kreedam" meaning a crown. I believe the army of celestial beings under Lord Shiva are called "Shiv Ganas" (pronounced "gaNaas").
I think you missed out three major points. I’m surprised that the tour guide didn’t mention.
1. The viman of main temple is made of single granite with weight of 80 tonnes. It is still unknown how such huge stone brought at the top of the main temple and kept there.
2. Entire temple structure is made of granite stones interlocking. In 1000 years, there were several earthquakes, tsunami, cyclones, floods passed by but it didn’t damage a single things in this temple.
3. The main temple’s viman shade doesn’t fall on ground.
Last not the least, every temple across TN, you will find a demon face with half hands inside his mouth at top of every temple including Maa Meenakshi temple, Rameswaram temple, Brihadeswar temple, all 5 elements of creation Shiva temples, Ranganathswamy temple etc and most of houses (at top of the front gate or entrance).
His name is Krithi mukha, according to Shiva Mahapuran, the sages were disturbing Bhagwan Shiva when he was in medication. So, Bhagwan Shiva created this demon and asked to eat all of them after he ate all then he kept on asking what he will eat further, then Bhagwan Shiva told him eat yourself. He obeyed Bhagwan Shiva’s order Abd started eating himself. When Bhagwan Shiva saw him, he almost eat his entire body and only left with his face and both hands which he was eating.
Bhagwan Shiva gave him blessings that you will be worshiped at the top of every temple and houses.
Wow sir, good piece of information there.....thanks for expanding my knowledge 🙂😄
@@sriramsankar8958 You are welcome. I have little knowledge about Brihadeswar temple (Big Temple) and its history. I was witnessed when I visited with my parents in December'23.
One mistake sir , pallava dynasty their mother tongue was not telugu they were using prakit and tamil .. hope it will be rectified 😊
🙏💪💪🇮🇳💪💪🕉️❤️🙏
Last year we have visited this temple. All it was written in Tamil. Now, for your detailed info thank you so much. Stunning architecture.
If anyone is interested in knowing more about how this temple was built, there is a great book series written by famous tamil writer Balakumaran called Udayar. I believe english translations are available. It will give you goosebumps guaranteed.
Where can I find these resources?
What a surprise temple had made in just, 6 year, that's great अर्किटेक्❤❤.

Your all videos Great informatic ..
Hi Harish, you have captured it well although there is lot more details to the temple and Chola dynasty. I had spent 3 days there and feel it’s not enough to know the history. Sad thing is there is widespread vandalism in the palace with people recklessly writing on walls. Hope the government takes notice urgently and maintains the place. Thanks for your Bharath Darshan
During the reign of the Pallava dynasty (Tamil Kingdom) which ruled over the areas that currently belong to Andhra Pradesh and northern Tamil Nadu, the Telugu language was not in use. It was only after the 9th century that the Telugu language started to gain prominence and became a widely spoken language in the Andra region. Tamil literature refers to Telugu language as a dialect with tougher pronunciations.
😂😂😂😂 narrow minded linguistic biased guy can't digest truth... read properly history pallavas r Telugu kings.. just by changing tiruchirapalli to Trichy nd chennapatnam to Chennai can't change history.... there r almost 2 crore Telugu people in TN... don't forget vijayanagara Empire saved u From madurai sultans..or else ur history' would have been different
Please guide us how to book room in Ttdc in Rameshwaram, Kanyakumari, Madurai
Very informative volg sir, such an old architecture of Tanjavur Heritage.

Wow!! Incredible! Absolutely awesome temple, beautiful palace and library. Wish we could see the inside of the library. Your temple tour guide was very informative and has a lot of knowledge about the history and architecture. Wonderful! I love history and ancient architecture. Thank you so much 🙏🏼
Amazing temples.
I'm suprised the guide did not mention about the 25tonne dome on the main gopuram(Viman) which is carved from a single rock. They had make an incline for several kilometers to put this dome on top of the gopuram and use elephants to move it
I heard from hero of aparichit
i think the dome was 80 ton
@@blockbuilds5818 Correct. I have always heard of it as weighing 80 tons.
@@SK-xw4guI just checked wikipedia. It says "The sikhara, a cupolic dome (25 tons), is octagonal and rests on a single block of granite, weighing 80 tons."
Yes I have read about it in Udayar written by the prolific tamil writer Balakumaran.
