Top 5 Things to do in North Dakota
North Dakota is one of those states that tends to get overlooked when you're planning your next summer vacation. In fact if you asked most people what they know about this state all they could probably tell you is that it's above South Dakota. That's about all I knew before we purposefully planned a trip there to take in some of the sights and sounds. So here are our top 5 things to do in North Dakota. This list is by no means exhaustive, we only barely scratched the surface of this great state. Let us know in the comments if we missed your favorite North Dakota attraction.

This video made me cry 🥲 I just feel so strongly about moving here from Maine to start a new life, been researching like crazy and just being where I am now I feel that I'm really missing out in the world, you guys have bison and wild horses! That's amazing, wild horses are kinda rare nowadays aren't they? I so badly want to be there right now exploring my new home but I gotta wait 6 more months to save up as much as I can for the big move. I'm so excited to live there and to see all that North Dakota has to offer! I plan to move to Fargo so not sure how far some of these places in the video are to it but I wrote it all down to explore later on when I get there! Quite peaceful here and "North Dakota nice" is a phrase for a reason.
There's more to do on the east side, but it's flat and a higher crime rate. What little crime we have.

This is old info from when I was a kid but it's probably somewhat reflective today, though heavy toward "other": 45% were Germans, and 40% were Norwegian; the rest were Polish, French, UK, Eastern European AND Irish, especially in western Pembina County. (Sweden was noticably represented, but most who came over stayed behind in Minnesota.) As for the Irish, it seems you can't quench your thirst in the state without running into one. A visitor once wrote home to Boston that N.D. "is a strange place, the rivers run north and the Irish vote Republican."
The fine video covered only western N.D. On my list a!so would be: Lake Sakakawea, Turtle Mountains and Peace Garden, Pembina Gorge, Fort Ransom and the Shyenne River, Devils Lake aka Spirit Lake, Kildeer Mountains, Red River of the North and the Little Missouri River. (For most of these destinations, don't just go there, N.D. doesn't have a Gettysburg or Cooperstown, N.Y. Go online etc. for info, set your objective, and arrive with a plan.)

Best five things: 1 get cold ears
    2 play in snow
3 go into ditch on a windy day
    4 get hypothermia
5 wear a lot of snow clothes but still get cold
Edit: this is the just the bad stuff North Dakota is a very nice state
Just saying you should go to North Dakota in the summer
Edit 2: it’s rare to get hypothermia once you get used to the cold

I was exiled to Grand Forks Air Force Base in the late 1970’s for 4 grueling years. (It was hell for this 18 year old without the uninvented Internet and a long distance phone call cost $1.05 per minute adjusted for inflation)
Northeastern North Dakota is the total opposite of this video. (5.5 hours east)
Furthermore, I see you visit during their extremely short summers. (July 31 through August 2nd)
Come to Grand Forks in January and bring your kids, because you may need to sacrifice them and eat them to stay alive. Needless to say,
    I hope to never return.

I am a native North Dakotan and have survived for 72 years winters in Fargo without eating any children. 😊. I know you are making a joke, but the winters are not all that bad, you just have to be prepared for them. Granted an 18 year old, without transportation, would only have what was on the base for entertainment. But you could go hunting or read a book. If you would have gone outside a little bit longer each day you would have found that you could actually survive the winter. ❄️

I embraced North Dakota as best as an 18 could, 1,050 miles from home. (southeastern Illinois) I eventually bought a snowmobile, cross country skis and fishing. I’m not a hunter. I had 2 extended weekends at Lake Ashtabula and Devils Lake and was skunked both times, but Minnesota made up for that 10 fold. The U.S. Air Force provided us with excellent Artic gear, but it was still a deadly environment, especially in the late 70’s.
The worst was the townspeople of Grand Forks. Some (not all) treated us with great disrespect, calling us “Scum Basers” and looked as if we were aliens from outer space.
The females, attending University of North Dakota, wanted absolutely nothing to do with us guys from the base. We stuck out like a sore thumb with our required short haircuts when long hair was the norm of the time. It was 4 years of hell, not what any young man should be exposed to. It was like an open air prison and my only conviction was to serve my country.
