I admit I was a little nervous when you were installing the cover screws. I kept waiting for the tick tick sound of one rolling under the engine. Do this job before drinking coffee.

That’s funny because I actually did lose a screw under the engine. Fortunately, I was able to find it quickly.

I see jabs go sells three screws for $10. We have a great hardware store in town and I found the same screws for $.25 each.

At that price it would be wise to carry a set of spares onboard!

What about the little round rubber piece that goes in the center?

My pump does not have any round rubber piece in the center so I’m not sure what you are referring to. For the benefit of our viewers that have a pump that does, perhaps you could provide more information on that.

I will kindly disagree with you on the fact that the blades will automatically find the correct direction. I found this to be false after disassembling my pump after I had purchased my boat and put a full season on her. So I actually don't know the age of the impeller as I did not install it, I only know it was at least one season old with at least 50 of my own hours on the engine. When I opened the cover, 3 or 4 blades were in the wrong direction. People say there is a space that allows the blades to extend enough to find "the right direction". I saw no such space when I looked, and my blades told a different story. I would suggest to anyone looking for info on this, that if you want the blades to be in the correct direction, put them in said direction. And the easiest way to do so is to put a hose clamp around the impeller before install to hold the blades in place, and then the impeller slides in without any persuasion or percussion. The clamp will slide itself off when it hits the housing and it's done. Install screws and float down stream. Peace

Interesting. I wonder if it’s possible there was an oversized impeller in your pump that prevented the blades from straightening out? I have never personally experienced that problem but maybe I have just been lucky. I find your hose clamp solution very interesting. I will have to try that. Thanks!

@@CruisingThisOldBoat the hose clamp trick is the best ever. It insures all the blades are in the same direction with zero fuss. I've heard of people using zip ties as well but the clamp is reusable and easily adjustable incrementally as you keep the blades in the correct orientation. I am actually going to install the new impeller right now so I will report back if it was the correct size. I am relatively certain it is, but I will let you know 👍

@@CruisingThisOldBoat so the impeller was identical. And as I sit on the boat in my driveway with her running out of a bucket, I can't even get her up to temp without being under load (without those 3 opposite folded blades... Can't get her above 150° before the hose can't feed enough water as I bring the rpm's up. Pretty crazy. Definitely try that hose clamp trick though, I pulled my impeller out several times in a couple of minutes with it. Some people say it takes 2 but I find one in the middle does the trick. Been boating for 40 years and just found this trick recently and I'm kicking myself for not thinking of it😂

I think what might have happened is sometimes when you start the engine, the engine does it start right up the shaft turns backwards just to hair but enough to turn some of the fins the opposite way
