  • Leaking raw water pump on our Ford Lehman 120, replacing old style pump with the new updated pump. Living our dreams aboard our 36' Island Gypsy trawler, Unfettered. Traversing the Great Loop from Lake Michigan and through the Illinois waterway, Mississippi river, and the Tennessee Tombigbee waterway, to the gulf and stopping for an extended stay in Marathon where we will have some fun and get ready for the east coast part of the journey. I do this stuff professionally and have accumulated many tools over the years. I always admire and am amused by how much these guys get done with water pump pliers, adjustable wrench, pocket knife and a Leatherman.

Nicely done, if you are worried about the hose clamps coming off when you are not there, you can turn off the seacock.

The time to test fit is before the gasket and sealant are applied.

Nice work. I would have cleaned up the salt while the pump was out of the way and also ordered the red paint from American. You could paint the new pump so it matches, and also keep the engines touched up around the bolts from wrenches, etc. Nice clean engines, so nice to keep them like that.

Is it possible to put that pin in the wrong way?

Thanks for posting this. We have a 1983 Island Gypsy 32 with a single 120 hp Ford Lehman diesel. I noticed the black box with a lever and chain in the lower right corner of your video starting at about 2:26. Our IG has a panel with two similar levers connected by a chain positioned on the bulkhead forward of the engine room. One lever is labelled "engine" but I have not been able to determine what these are for. Any idea?

Weren’t you supposed to install a block off pin in the oil feed hole before you put the pump in? I had to do this when I replaced my pump. Did the same replacement you did and got the pump from American Diesel. We always close all sea cocks when leaving the boat. No reason to leave them open when the engine is not running. Close the fuel off at the tank too.

The body of the waterpump behind the helical cut gear (Dorset engine) or the straight cut gear (Dover engine ) blocks that hole off. Never in 40plus years of working on all models and hp ratings of those engines heard of having to block that oil feed hole off when the proper saltwater pump does it anyway.

Do you have the spx/johnson part number or any other details of the replacement pump? Do you remember where you bought it from?
