9mm EPC/PCC for Home Defense? Will it GET THE JOB DONE? Hornady Critical Defense Balistic Gel Test

- I've tested these critical defense in two different calibers now and they don't have the prettiest expansion/flowering out.
Will this get the job done from the distance it was tested? More than likely yes. While 9mm doesn't have the stopping power that a shotgun round has, I'd be able to get more shots on target, faster, than with a shotgun for sure.
Interesting test, but likely inconclusive until I test it with a barrier between the gel and the surroundings, i.e. clothing!

The polymer insert is to promote expansion and avoid clogging up clothing materials. Similar to the hornady ftx line of bullets.
Thanks John. That’s going to be a test that I’ll have to do soon
They also allow you to be able to carry a hollow point in states where it isn't legal.
I think the little ballistic tip helps with loading too. Rounding the nose off. It seems a hollow point will hang up, sometimes (not a lot), because some PCCs don't have dedicated feed ramps! Just a small, beveled edge at the chamber.
Another great video. That was some nice expansion. HD depends on the floor of the house. 1st floor set up for the parents and 2 floor for the kids.
First time viewer, thanks for the info. This kinda confirms the Hornady Critical Defense is a good round for my Ruger PC Charger with the 6.5" barrel. I subbed and will check out your videos.👍
Thanks for the video. Good gel test.
Good test indeed
Great! Finally, somebody tests PCCs for HD!
The red insert is supposed to give the bullet consistent expansion and not let it get clogged
I see a few youtubers if not most do a jell test without cloth cover. Hornadays plastic incert was to mitigate the cloth, fur.
We’re going to have to do that test next!
@@andrewmconrad it’s also what causes the expansion upon impact instead of having to
Be filled with a chunk of whatever ur shooting at before expanding inside and possible loss of expansion
Out of a PCC I would use Gold dot +p or HST +P. Critcal Defense is meant for CC guns like a 365 or hellcat.
Understood. I’ll have to give those rounds a try as well
@@andrewmconrad Critical DEFENSE is for short barrels, Critical DUTY is for full size 4.5 to 5 inch barrels for it would probably be more appropriate for subguns or PCCs
Yes I always wanted to see jell test done at range vs up close. I think you get a better understanding of what the round will do at the distance you plan on using the firearm for.
13 inches of penetration at 22ish yards is pretty good, but we need to see how putting some clothing in front of the round will affect it
12 gauge 3-inch 00-buck 15 pellets is my home defense ammo, yes the felt recoil is nasty but so does the devastation from this round.
That’s a big mama-jama!
I would have loved to see you do the gel test at 10 yards as well. Myself and a lot of others will be using it for home defense and will probably be within 10-15 yards and. Ot 25-35 yards.
Primary long gun is a Mossberg 500 410 loaded with 9 pellet #4 buck and backed with 4 pellet 000 buck in the saddle. My longest shot in the house would be around 12 yards. In case a mob storms the house I also keep a Keltec Sub 2k loaded with 147 grain XTP in happy sticks. I have been looking at 9mm Norma NXD 65 grain fluted bullets. Recoil is significantly reduced in my Hellcat and accuracy was very good. I have not tried them in a PCC.
My Aero EPC (born in 2019) did NOT like HPs. Got a replacement barrel from Aero but that didn’t help. Finally I installed a 12” guaranteed feed barrel from Macon Armory. I then tested 5 different HP rounds as well as those IMI Di-Cut rounds. It now eats everything except Golden Sabers. I was concerned that the extra barrel length might boost the velocities past what the bullets are designed to handle. But I only gained about 130 ft/sec so I think I’m okay. The gel test you performed certainly verified this. BTW….I can’t shoot a handgun worth a damn but I’m easily nailing it out to 25 yds with the PCC. I’ve also suppressed it.
I have this in 45acp and 9mm. Good to know how it performs in a pcc.
I’m still waiting for aero to release their epc 10/45. I’d love to do these tests in there
Somebody slap me for what I'm about to say. Honestly I think frangable ammo would be the better way to go. Almost eliminates over penetration and dumps all of its energy on impact. I feel so gross for saying this
Interesting you should say that. I did another test right up that alley. Should be out Saturday
I liked the Areo 9mm lower with matching upper, but went with a Faxon barrel with integrated muzzle device so I could use a rifle stock. It’s a good size, not too long and handles well. I agree that the 9mm pcc is a good home defense option.
What’s your feedback on the integrated Faxon barrel? I’m assuming it’s the 14.5” with integrated device?
I went with a 8” Faxon in my original epc build, but am looking at the longer Faxon depending on what the new ATF ruling is when it’s all finalized.
@@dennisschafer8594 yep, I went with the longer barrel to avoid the hassle. I like the integrated muzzle device as it allows for as more compact package. I first saw this on a Thunder Ranch rifle and it makes even more sense on a 9 mm.
@@timlee5260 did you go with the standard flash hider or the muzzle break?
@@dennisschafer8594 it looks like a A2 flash hider with a solid bottom and five long slits. I have a 8.5 inch Faxon barrel in 9 mm with a stainless brake from Delta team. It was cheap and looks nice.
Have you guys had any issues with feed?
Hey Andrew, I believe you can use a heat gun from Harbor Freight, or a Dewalt or a Milwaukee to get the wrinkles out of your gelatin. Ask Tools and Targets he does tons of gel tests. It might seem somewhat petty to some people but it really will make the gelatin smooth and clear.
I think those wrinkles are from shipping because it shipped in a plastic bag inside a box inside a box and who knows how hot it got while shipping. Nevertheless, I have to melt them down and I know thwy'll be feesh and smooth. But thank you. I don't like the wrinkles either 😂
Thanks, that was pretty informative. I have a PC 9mm and I was wondering if it was even worth while to use JHP in it.
I think so because it’s so accurate
Have you shot federal HST’s out of that epc-9? I’ve heard it has problems shooting it so I would like to see a video of you shooting it. Thanks
What muzzle device and hand guards are you using? Is that an aero EPC9? I looked through your videos and couldn’t find one about the build itself
Have you had any malfunctions running range ammo? I've had stove pipes when shooting 115gr FMj on my epc9 with 11" barrel.
Critical Defense is made specifically for compacts. You might have better luck with Critical Duty or they even make 147gr HST HP. I am curious myself as I think of buying a PCC.
I think it’s to help the round in flight to go straight and less drag
That definitely makes sense. That could account for the increase speed along with the longer barrel
M&p with 18 seeds of V Crown
Solid choice
My quick grab gun is a Ruger PC carbine 16" barrel with 124gr V Crowns, curious what kind of speed that length barrel puts on the round, and expansion
I’d be interested to know as well!
Check out Buffman here on CZcams. He does tests into gel with chronographs and uses multiple barrel lengths. A spoiler, sometimes the longer barrels shooting handgun rounds slow down. FPS is good at 4 inches, great at 9 inches, and slow back down on 16 inches.
@@mattjaxdad8693I think certain ammo types that are for shorter barrels drag in longer barrels. They burn up their propellant quickly so that extra barrel slows them down.
Lucky Gunner did some testing with your rifle. Gold Dots and HSTs in various weights.
Pcc I would use a Henry 45-70 but don’t have one anymore 🤣
I really really need to get it back to you 😂😂
@@andrewmconrad no problem man I’m just messing with you. I feel like it’s in good hands.
@@ryanpettit82 It’s been sitting in the box. I haven’t used it since the last video 😂
Pistol, PCC, and hand combat for self defense!!!
Good video! Has anyone ever had issues with this ammo in their guns?
I haven’t had issues with critical defense in any of my weapons. I have had issues with certain JHP’s in my EPC though. But I know that critical defense runs smooth
A friend of mine had a Hornady Critical Defense 9mm round jam in his S&W full size.
The red tip stopped the round from feeding when it hit the feed ramp.
First time I've seen that happen with that round.
I had that happen in my Glock 19 with the Venom 9mm ammo but cleaned the feed ramp and it hasn't happened again.
I'm not sure if the feed ramp was dirty on my friends S&W but I guess the moral of the story is to keep your feed ramp and weapon clean.
assuming you have a clear shot into an intruder, yes, this gel test is valid. But, real world, the bad guy probably isnt naked nor would he likely be just standing out in the open. Try some underwood stuff. Much better barrier blind ammo.
I love my epc 9. I had a 8.3 cmmg barrel laying around so I used that for the build. Everything besides the barrel and the bolt is aero. I use a faxon bolt with the 308 spring and aero solid buffer. Has the 510c green on top 😳
EPC?? Had good luck with Critical Defense loads...also HSTs. Not so much with G Dots.
Indeed. I need to try those soon
Home defense- 9mm pcc over AR pistol??
Coming Saturday 😈
barrel length?
8.3"
Sir put your GoPro in 60/120/240 fps
don't buy guns
use those for danger close other wise HST 115/124 if it won’t feed HST ditch it any full sized HG/MCK over PCC otherwise 11.5 the ♉️G3 best travel pdw just make sure it runs HP keep HP in factory mags and JSP/FMJ/+Woods in coor. extendeds for 🛻/🧱/🤖🤣
