My Life At Shaolin Temple

  • This video is based entirely on my personal experience at Shaolin Temple and I only used my own footage.
    I always wanted to do this video and now felt like a good time. I guess you could call this the 'Origin Story'.
    I hope you enjoy.
    Edit: I just recently changed my mind about my "no ads"-Idea. I realized asking you guys to support me on patreon on every video is a lot more annoying than a simple ad infront of a video.
    All I want is to create more and better content and if ads will help me do that, then that's the way to go :)

I was very fascinated by this martial art since my very childhood and after watching your video I had the courage to go there and met these people. It's difficult for me, to meet new people and i was motivated by your story, because you decided to do the same but in a different country. • @JonasAnandaKristiansson
      @JonasAnandaKristiansson Před 4 lety +181

      @@Rere-rj3ff Spirituality is beyond words and definition, beyond time and space. It is the inherent nature of what you/we are, beyond the ego/personal identity as the body-mind.
      Spirituality, as talked about especially in Western misunderstandings of it, is not spirituality, it is not the Dao, but another game of the mind that forms a spirituality identity, which is very very common, and makes people think "they are spiritual".
      Non duality, is actual spirituality, and not just concepts, the temporary like thoughts, feelings, emotions, relationships and what not, but actual spirituality, and your essence, is boundless, timeless, with no beginning or end. Pure consciousness (existence, consciousness, and bliss, aka Sat Chit Ananda) is "You", beyond the concept and thought of "You".
      This can not be understood, even touched a little bit, by the mind construct. It has to be a direct experience of the life one is. And any human being can "experience the Self", if one is willing to release the dumbed down version of self called "the ego"/personality, to realize the boundless nature of the 'divine', the self, "God", "The Universe".

      just like how one who is humble doesn't say "I'm humble" a spiritual person explains spirituality as a way of life by one's own example (hence the simplicity in training; "Watch.", "Listen.", "Breathe"), a technique of stillness, instead of as something you do for the sake of expressing it
      that's just a wild guess tho

    • @spastickid218

      Not to mention that it serves a different purpose. It hardens the body, and helps you have a higher pain tolerance. You think the Shaolin could be able to do kicks and falls that involve them landing flat on their backs without feeling pain? Anybody else does it, they'll be grabbing the back of their heads and shoulders from hitting the concrete. For Shaolin? They get clubbed in these areas on a regular basis.

    This line made a lot of sense to me. It's akin to when you're making a life change, or intending to undertake a large project that you tell people about, advertising it seems as if you're taking the energy and spirit out of your intent. I think in the process of trying to promote and flex ourselves in front of others, that we're really just after the short-term satisfaction and validation that people give us -- not the internal validation and satisfaction that comes from the pursuit of evolving ourselves. Wise words, indeed.

    Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang, and although his airbending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world.

I wished they would've addressed what exactly happened to Zuko's mom. The show was so good. Reminded me of that feeling when I first watched Naruto. But now it's all over. :(

    About 8 years ago (also 19 years of age) I was lost like you, completely uninterested in college, and having grown up on kung fu films decided to undertake the same adventure. I arrived in Dengfeng completely unaware of what I had gotten myself into. China is a different world and can be quite intimidating, especially as a laowai with very little mandarin ability. Like you, I wanted to train with the monks, but because I was a foreigner with no connections, no mandarin, and no wushu experience, it was made clear to me that was completely out of my grasp.
    I was sent to the Shaolin temple school in the city which was home to roughly 10,000 students, many of them orphans. I can really relate to the nightmare that was your first days, no friends (no one even to talk to), brutal heat and humidity, and the worst living conditions I had ever experienced, I seriously considered just packing up and heading home then and there. I didn't though, I gritted my teeth and tried to take the days one at a time. The extreme difficulty and suffering was juxtaposed with moments of bliss. I remember eating dumplings and watching a fireworks show put on by the school after a miserably hot day of training; the night was cool and I was in dumpling heaven with one of the best fireworks displays I had ever seen.
    When I thought my training was tough, all I had to do was look at the Chinese students. It's like you said, these kids are training 12 hour days minimum, I was totally blown away by their work ethic. My master was a specialist of one of the techniques shown in your video at 10:00, he would jump high in the air, and land horizontal in various poses on cement. When he preformed this for me I couldn't believe it, he wasn't a small guy at all and would land hard.
    Anyway, I only lasted a couple months at that school. I started to get quite sick and after some crazy opportunities presented themselves I ended up at a cleaner and cheaper school that had other foreigners training there, which is where I studied sun style xingyi quan for a year (but that's a different story). I can say with confidence that my time in China was the craziest and most valuable experience of my life. By the end of my time there I was in love with china, and it will always have a place in my heart.
    Sorry for the long comment, perhaps you wont even read it, but I felt moved to share. Two people from different countries, who abandoned the comforts of home with the same longing for adventure, both experiences - although different - resulting in a lot of personal growth. Isn't life beautiful?

      Where are you from? Did you learn a martial art in your country first?
      There is something special about immersing oneself completely in a different culture to learn a skill, sport, or a language. I have done it twice.
      Life is incredibly short.
      Our window for personal growth never ends, it just depends on how one views the world - as an opportunity to engage or something to be shielded from.

      @Gerhard Symons Well put! I am from the US, and I trained boxing in high school for 2 years before going to China. I was surprised to find some similarities between the two. These days I train mostly BJJ, with some kickboxing on the side.
      In my country in particular, people seem to confuse comfort and pleasure with happiness. Difficulty is something they wish to eliminate from their lives rather than an opportunity for growth. I think a lot of people are miserable due to this mentality, but its a misery they know, and the fear of the unknown keeps them perpetually tied down.
      It's very sad, and so many people are sick and lost these days, but I think it's changing slowly but surely. Where are you from friend? Are martial arts a part of your life as well? All the best.

      @xKazenokami Hi there!
      It's nice to hear you are ready for some adventure. First off let me say that it has been 8 years since I was in China, and based on my internet findings, things have changed quite a bit! The "teach foreigners kung fu" industry looks a lot more legit than when I was there, and I imagine Dengfeng has changed a lot as well.
      The school I spent the majority of my time at was actually in Fujian province and when I was there I paid 450 per month for training, and room and board. However that school is closed now and the owner has opened a new one in a different location. I just looked at the website and wow, it looks insanely nice compared to the humble academy I attended: www.risingdragonschool.com
      Not surprisingly, the price has increased. It looks like my old master Deng Fu Ming is still teaching, he was a great teacher and a genuinely good guy. I cannot speak for the rest of the crew tho. Also I met quite a few people from this school: www.wudangwushu.com who swore up and down that it was extremely good, and based on their knowledge and skill I believe them.
      Honestly tho, if you want a place in Dengfeng I would suggest you learn a little bit of mandarin and just go there and shop around. Spend a week or so at a bunch of different schools and find one that fits. If money is an issue your cheapest option is likely at a school for chinese students. However, be prepared for a very lonely, uncomfortable, and all around difficult time, but if you can handle it, i'm sure the benefits would be immeasurable! While I was wandering Dengfeng looking for a school, many places tried to make me pay a way too much and didn't take my training seriously. So be aware that many schools see you as a cash cow and some haggling may be necessary.
      I wish you the best on your journey! stay strong!

      If you are looking to explore the spiritual aspect of chinese martial arts I can only recommend the second school i mentioned. Even though I never had the chance to attend, the people I met from there gave me a lot of details about their meditation and qi gong practice, it all seemed to be taken very seriously. My school had great teachers and training but the spiritual aspect was missing. As far as the more chinese schools go, I think spirituality isn't a major aspect of most of them... and it seemed to be something that wasn't easily shared with foreigners. Keep in mind that the super traditional styles and ways of life aren't easy to find, especially for a foreigner. Kung fu is definitely smoother looking than karate, but is it more effective in a fight? Well... I have a whole lot of opinions on different fighting styles, what works, and why but I wont get into that now. Regardless, there are innumerable benefits for going on a chinese kung fu adventure, I guess you should just ask yourself what you want from such a trip.
