    My husband (passed away 2 years ago) loved to garden, it was his passion. It made me feel good to hear you put into words how he felt too when it came to gardening. Although I don’t have the same passion, I do enjoy watching your videos. Sorry that you are going through a tough period. Good luck in your new chapter of life. And remember “keep calm and plant something”.

    I am also from up north, Minnesota, and lived there 12 years, moved to Minnesota per Father's Airlines job. You are definitely not just a gardener but an Extension Master Gardener, you have shown this and your advocation as well. Many blessings on your transition Cortney, you seem like a warrior and a great Mom.

      Thanks so much for the encouragement, kind comments like this on my channel help me keep plowing through. Minnesota is a beautiful place, like Michigan. I very much miss northern summers when it gets so hot and muggy here.

    Cortney - Keep your chin up. Life is an adventure, and I'm sure you will have a wonderful garden at your new place. I definitely agree that with prices going up in the store growing your own garden is something everyone should do no matter how big or small. Saving money on even one item/plant is cost effective in this economy. Also love your daughter with the butterflies. Your kids will have great memories. Thanks for your gardening advice. Take care.

    I’m so sorry that you are in a difficult transition period, and I know your garden brings you joy and calms your heart. I am a beginner gardener and grow strawberries, peppers and a few herbs in 3 GreenStalk vertical planters. It’s fun to check them every morning and evening to see if the peppers have gotten bigger or if more babies have started to appear. I think I’d eventually like to add a raised metal bed, but I’ll probably try to become proficient with the GreenStalks first. I hope your home sells quickly and you find and settle into your new place soon. ❤

    Your philosophy and approach to gardening are great. Gardening is a journey and our paths are not always of our own choosing. I've had many gardens over the years, small and big, and each one was better than the last. Your best garden will always be the next one. It may be a struggle getting it started but the effort and results make it very worthwhile. We're with you during this transition and looking forward to seeing your future garden space.

The house is under contract 🤞 which has been a journey in itself so far since it’s very old (1790’s). I don’t think my next place will be this old. LOL

    I'm so sorry that you and the kids are going through this. It can be so hard when life takes a turn you didn't see coming and finding a new direction. We do mourn those dreams and expectations that are gone but that's when you take a breath and make new dreams! You are strong and it shows just making these videos take effort but by all means ask for help when you need it. Once you get settled you and the kids should take a break and go dominate some storms with Reed that would be awesome to see and how can you not have a joyous time with him! You got this girl I know you do and if you don't mind I will keep y'all in my prayers. I really appreciate all you do to share your knowledge with us❤ NEVER STOP GROWING🌱💪🏼

    I lived in upstate NY when I was little and we had a large garden and the corn and green beans were my favorite! Sorry you are going through tough times. It's definitely hard now, but It will get easier as time goes by. When I divorced, my kids were 3, 5, and 12. We had to leave the state (VA) and move to NC. They are now 23, 25 and 32. The adjustment was hard on all of us, but we made it through, and you will too! Glad you have gardening for your therapy. Will say prayers for you as you heal.

    A tree fell on our little gardens fence and the deer have gotten in and ate not only the veggies but much of the leaves of our plants too! I'm putting them up on the porch! You are a gardening pro! Do you have a degree in horticulture? Do you work outside the home? I'm having to take a part time job and homeschool and it's a challenge but it will all work out! Never stop growing!!

      Oh my goodness, sorry to hear about the deer! Fingers crossed for you, I bet your porch will be a safe bet because maybe they won't want go so close to your house. Looking back, I wish I would've gotten my degree in horticulture (Michigan State) but it's in graphic design/advertising. I do freelance work from home at the moment while homeschooling, also trying to grow this channel to combine my gardening passion with my design background. Just taking things day by day trying to sell the house and hopefully move before school starts again. Hang in there, I'm sure you'll find your rhythm working part time and homeschooling, it might just take time. Yes - never stop growing!!

      Thanks so much for watching! I wish you were my neighbor because I would love to learn how to grow flowers. It's my dream to be able to grow both veggies and flowers - maybe I could experiment with a really small cutting garden at my new place. We've had perennials (coneflowers etc. for pollinators) and my daughter's butterfly garden to attract monarchs, but I would love to have a cutting garden as well! A new endeavor always makes us worry a bit but the way your heading with this gardening and such I'm positive you're going to be just fine 😏👍
    A question about your parsnip..we have wild hog weed invasion in Ontario Canada here but it looks like your parsnip are they the same thing? Maybe it wild parsnip here ...🤔
    These plants are huge too and can burn the skin

    • @CortneyGrowsFood
      @CortneyGrowsFood  Před 2 měsíci

      Thank you for your encouragement! Yes, the gardening definitely helps. I've heard garden variety parsnips bred for human cultivation can have the same effect, especially if you're handling the leaves in sunlight. We haven't had issues, knock on wood. I believe they're in the same family as wild parsnips. Giant hogweed is different than wild parsnip but I think the reaction can be even worse from what I've heard. I can see how even garden parsnips can be invasive since they've self-seeded in several of our raised beds.

    Thanks as always, I learn something new with every video. I do have a question about the mulch you use. When I think of mulch I think of wood chunks but what you use is more like strings or straw strands. Is this a certain type of mulch? Is chunks versus strings better? Thanks again

    • @CortneyGrowsFood
      @CortneyGrowsFood  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Thank you for watching, I'm glad the videos have been helpful. In my experience, any natural mulch that's easy to get (that doesn't have pesticide/herbicide residue) works. I use pine straw (pine needles) because I can swipe them up from the woods behind the garden or they're pretty cheap if I buy bales in bulk from local businesses. When I lived in Michigan I never saw pine straw used, it was always shredded hardwood or chips. Here in South Carolina pine straw mulch is EVERYWHERE. I've been using it for 11 years now and haven't seen a negative effect on the soil. Some say it will affect soil pH, but I haven't experienced that.
