I personally think your channel should have exploded last year! I am growing 65 day corn since I am in corn country in MN and I want to make sure my corn doesnt cross with the field corn. Every 4th year tho I get to grow the longer to grow varieties when the farmers grow soybeans. Thanks for all you do to help people be able to grow more of their own food!

Wow, you really have a firsthand understanding of timing to avoid cross pollination! 65 day corn is nice because there's less of a wait until harvesting and less time for pests to find it hehe! I miss the views of cornfields driving around in the Midwest - it's been years since I've been back.
This year in our garden we grew sweet corn in raised metal beds and finally had our first success with sweet corn in our garden. It would always either topple over, or just grow weakly from lack of nutrients. Compost alone wasn't enough in our beds for this crop. We sowed into the bottom of 6 to 8-inch deep furrows this year. And as the corn grew, we periodically added compost and composted manure from our piles to the furrows, essentially "hilling up" the plants. By the time they tassled, the furrows were completely filled level, supporting the plants well at the base and the corn didn't topple over at all. The added fertilizer from the manure must have provided the nutes the plants needed, because it was a bumper crop.
Awesome, congrats on your bumper crop! Thanks so much for sharing your tips about the furrows you made - that's amazing that they helped them stay strong at the base and totally makes sense that they probably strengthened the root system as well. I bet the compost worked magic that contributed to your bumper crop!
I like your videos and love to grow vegetables. But, the most I can muster is a few deep pots on my deck for tomatoes and green beans. Requires the least amount of effort. Only because over the last year I got psoriatic arthritis. Out of nowhere and i'm only 51. So, I can't kneel or even sit on the ground without needing a crane to get back up, ha. Also in hands. I'd love to do a larger raised metal bed like that.
Good for you for growing on your deck, sorry to hear about your arthritis. It's the first time I've tried deeper beds, they seem to be easier on the back so far than my 1-foot-deep wooden ones. I'll say that I think the narrower/longer configuration would be easier to manage tomato plants that you're constantly harvesting from..
Heres something i think you may find interesting- Genetically modified fruits/veggies have no discernable health downsides, or benefits compared to organic alternatives.
That set aside, it's nice to grow your own if you're able to or want to, because you can choose the varieties you think taste the best. Garden corn tastes so good!
I bought some bicolor corn at Costco a while back. It was too sweet. I normally cream ours with a Norpro wood corn cutter and creamer (amazon $16.85)I like silver queen (white)corn. Sweet enough, but not too sweet. Only getting 2 ears feels like being cheated. I'm next door in peach state.
Hi neighbor in the Peach State! Silver Queen sounds like Mirage - my kids and I love the white varieties. Huge bonus of growing your own, you can pick out your preferred sweetness level and other preferences. Thanks for watching my video!
