  • Dr. James Dedecker, director of the Michigan State University Upper Peninsula Research and Extension Center in Chatham, Michigan, and the crop research crew begin the 1st cutting of the 3-year low lignin alfalfa research trial. Low lignin alfalfa is bred to maintain quality at later maturity than other alfalfa varieties. This is meant to allow higher yield without sacrificing quality. This trial is a test to see how these varieties perform at
Chatham. The plots were damaged by alfalfa weevil, an unusual problem in the U.P.
