  • This is a basic overview on the Autel AL539B scan tool. I was not paid for this video. I was sent the product and asked to try it out and make a video on it. Overall I found this to be a very powerful tool for the price and a definitely useful tool for an automotive DIY enthusiast.

    Buyer beware, this tool can get you in trouble. Let me explain, I loved this tool so much that I purchased a second one to put in my glove box for mobile work. The scanner works great, battery tester has no problems, volt/amp meter is perfect....
    the main problem is the ohm meter function. The ohm meter is not calibrated well enough, it’s mainly for testing opens and shorts. Today I was working on a wiring harness problem for coworker and I borrowed their fluke. I discovered the battery to chassis ground was 40 ohms. The vehicle was delivered to my bay for repair and I showed my apprentice using the Autel 539B and now I’m reading shorts. Surly the fluke was wrong, my meter is never wrong...right? I repeat the test with the same fluke, 40 ohms; then borrow another fluke, 40 ohms...ugh. Now in real out the big guns. I grab the Snapon Zues, 40 ohms. My meter must be bad. So repeat the test with my 539b I have at home, short. I borrow another 539b, short. Are all the Autel DMM bad?
    I contacted Autel tech support and they referenced me to the owners manual. Autel states this is not an ohm meter, it’s a “continuity” tester

      Well that is certainly interesting. I've only used this so far for voltage testing as far as the DMM functions go. Good to know.

    Also been told yesterday by Autel in UK these units were made in 2015 and never updated. So these are old technology. This does not mean the technology was bad then though. Supposedly there are new battery testers just about to be released by Autel which connect in to their scan tools.

    When it says..."waiting for vehicle to respond" it means that you did not have the ignition key on. Turn it on, but have the engine off. Also, the message about erasing previous code pertains to erasing codes from another vehicle you may have tested. If so, you can erase them unless you need them for some reason.

    That battery could be replaced , I saw Astral open it. Looks like a standard size that Amazon or eBay would have.
    Double-sided tape on one side or some sort of glue holds it onto inside of case.

    Bought for code reading and smog readiness testing. Seems a bit too simplified if you have problems.. So still not sure it is all that good for testing in SoCal.. However the battery tester was a big surprise.. Not perfect for heavy use batteries. However for quick checking and a general idea of battery health for autos, it is my go to tool for a couple of years now..

    I have a question. I bought the same tool. It says AL539B on the box wrapper, but on the tester itself it only says AL539. Does your tester work as an AL539B?

    • @DIYAUTOCAR
      @DIYAUTOCAR  Před 3 lety

      Mine also says AL539 on the unit itself.

      The b means something like box. So it's an al539 and the b means the plastic box. DeWalt and Milwaukee do it like that but with different letters

    Went to a job today with my AL539B and after replacing Harmonic balancer crank pulley on 7 series BMW the customer had a flat batt. 8v when checked with Fluke multimeter. No chance to turn engine. just click. SO the battery was fitted down into the hole in the boot where it lived and on the top was no markings like CCA etc, and no figures either to put into this battery tester. Not without removing battery which was a long one I could see. So with my jump leads out of my van to battery I let it slowly get charge back, only not before having tested the battery. no jump leads connected for the test. I guessed the battery. Told the AL539B the CCA was 700 and ran the test. It came back saying battery only produced 143CCA so battery needed changing. 10 minutes later with my heavy duty jump leads from a lorry juicing up the battery the customer went for engine start. The BMW 3.0 started. I disconnected the leads. ten mins later he switched engine off and tried to restart. It cranked perfect and restarted from just the battery which the Autel AL539B had said was rubbish.
    Were my guessed figures the real reason here, or was I close enough with my guess but the tool is not accurate? Finished that job and left. unfortunately will never know the battery figures. So have to simply watch out on other cars. Verify if the tool is good or poop.

      The batteries of mine that have tested bad with this tool and still started the car ended up failing me in cold weather. For science, I also took one of them that tested bad to the parts store and it also tested bad. Normally if a battery tests bad for me but starts in the summer fine, then it likely won't reliably start in the winter. I've also had plenty of bad batteries start fine with a jump and even start back up like 10-15 minutes later just fine. Leaving them sit overnight usually is the real test though.
      That has just been my experience at least.
