All these scan tools available on the market are great for DIYers, but sadly this has also led to an increase in auto theft. For criminals in the know, it's super easy to steal a car nowadays that have a push button start. If they can gain access to the vehicle and have a blank fob and mid level scan tool, they can program the fob to start the car in a couple minutes. Sometimes older tech can be better.

Pro tip: If you have a kid away in college (or anywhere) buy a scan tool, put it in a ziplock bag and leave it in the car they are using. I bought ANDEL AD200 for around $20 BUT for some reason it does not reset codes so I wish I bought the ANDEL AD410 ($35). One can also stop at the box stores and get a free scan too. Good luck and here is hoping you do't get the call I did that the light is on.

Mostly older, 50's 60's and a little maintenance on modern cars. having to work more on modern cars lately as my kids are starting to drive etc.. My Innova 3100 died. Am looking at replacing it. On your recommendation, considering Blue Driver or mid level, Innova or topdon etc.. ($300 - $400 range) Is there really enough functionality improvement to warrant the the extra cost?

  • @recoveringnewyorker2243

I have an old SPX scanner that stops at year 2006. I paid $200 for it. It’s very useful for reading live data. When it gives you the code it also gives you the definition. However, it will read codes that are not pre-programmed into it. In that case, it shows you the code, and the screen reads “Definition not found. Please consult service manual“ It has saved my bacon more than once!

When I was a teen, I had an uncle.. And he was the scan tool... Checking the battery was taking a pair of pliers, carefully touching one handle to the negative side and the other to the positive, If you got a bright blue shower of sparks, then the battery was ok, If you got nothing or next to it, battery was dead...😂.

I use an EML327, which plugs into USB, initially bought to use with my Ford Transit via ForScan. It's just an interface, not an actual scanner as such, but the upside is I can install various brands of software onto the laptop. The downside is I need to cart the bulky laptop around to use it.
You would remember as well as I do Scotty, the days when a multimeter and hand held tach would tell us all we needed to know 😅🤣

Those ELM devices work quite well with a tool called "Torque" if you have Android.

Ahh, the days gone by. My grandmother used to say, “Don’t buy any car with things that are too fancy. The more new things they have, the more things can break.” She was in her eighties when she died in 2011. Smart lady, and a real spitfire. 😂😂

I have Autel MK808BT, MD806 Pro and Xtool A30M. The MK808BT has bluetooth paid $500 3 years ago only free one year updates. MD806 has lifetime updates paid $230 3 years ago. A30M has bluetooth dongle and lifetime updates I paid $200 last year when scotty reviewed it. The A30M is my go to it has bi directional but the MD806 pro does not, and the fact it does almost everything the D7 does except key programming. For the price point the XTOOL A30M is awesome when I need keys I use MK808BT but like scotty said it does not program keys on every car. I programmed key fob on 2019 accord sport worked like a charm.

I wanted key programming so I got the D8 with Bluetooth. It also unlocks special function access when scanning and selecting the different modules.
The A30M would be my next choice if I didn't need it. I think it's the best value for what it offers especially the bidirectional control

By any chance does anyone of Scotty's fans remember the company he recommended for getting auto paint? I can't find the video.
Some knuckle head skimmed the back of my sons 2021 Corolla. The plastic bumper has tire crap on it and they scratched the paint on the metal in front of the wheel also.
    Thanks for any help

I had a constant problem at one point with the engine light in my Audi. I would always panic and used to call a repair shop immidiately and make appointments. got fed up with it that and bought a 100€ reader. I used the device about ten times to clear the engine light on my own until I got bored and eventually changed the lambda sensor that was giving the fault code. Even a cheaper reader saves your time and money - clearing the code at a shop always costs some 20-30€
