THIS STORY:
John "Liver-Eating" Johnson, born John Jeremiah Garrison Johnston, was said to be a mountain man of the American Old West. He was born with the last name Garrison, in the area of the Hickory Tavern near Pattenburg, New Jersey. During the Mexican-American War he served aboard a fighting ship. After striking an officer, he deserted, changed his name to John Johnston, and traveled west to try his hand at gold digging in Alder Gulch, Montana Territory. He then became a "woodhawk," supplying cord wood to steamboats. He also trapped wolves.
Rumors and legends about Johnson started to grow. Perhaps top among them is that in 1847, his wife, a member of the Flathead American Indian tribe, was killed by Crow braves, which prompted Johnson to embark on a vendetta against the tribe.
Legends grew; It was then said that he killed and scalped more than 300 Crow Indians and then devoured their livers to avenge the death of his wife. It went on from there.
The movie with Robert Redford "Jeremiah Johnson" was based on him - and it is now proven to be all fake. Redford and crew didn't know it back then. As the 20th century turned, this whole legend unraveled. Most of these stories were lies perpetuated by a popular book called "Crow Killer", by Raymond Thorp and Robert Bunker.
But an archivist at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West Museum in Cody Wyoming named Nathan Bender paints the true story of this man. He has since written the new introduction of the book "Crow Killer".

It’s a shame they are not having someone come in and clean those logs up because it will be the feed for the next fire that happens. My husband’s family had a cabin up in Cripple Creek in Calif. and the last time we were there the under brush, down trees, rotting trees. It was a place waiting to be burned by a fire. It happened the whole area was left to burn because to much under brush to feed the fire. Sad when the forest are not maintained for the good of them. Also I have not got notifications for your last two videos. Just got it this evening, long after you posted. 😢

What a story Ron and what beautiful photography too I might add! What's wrong with that guy who won't let you film? That's just like cutting off his nose to spite his face. He would probably get a lot more tourists from those who watch your video then any he would lose because of it. Video's I watch are what draws me to want to see something in person. That just makes no sense.
It’s about money everyone thinks they should get money. No more for the love of the thing, the job or another person. Thankful Ron loves this and he is so classy in the telling of these stories.
I loved this video. So close to m home in Mile City. I live right on the Yellowstone River. I met Chief Joe Crow many times. A most wonderful man. I have had the deepest pleasure of working with the Crow in Montana. Great video Ron. I am so impressed with the fact that you dig for facts.

Great story, Ron. Thank you! There was a massive fire at Yellowstone back in the late 1980s. I drove past it on my way home on leave from Malmstrom AFB back then. I wonder if that's the fire that took out all those trees you were standing around. A lot of them were charred.

That's pretty crappy to poison wolves. Some of mankind are so cruel and evil. If John Johnson did that with the liver of the man he killed , he's just as sickening. Well, I'll never be able to go there so he won't get my 12.00 anyway. He's a jerk. Thank you Ron, I love hearing about things that I otherwise would never know about. ☺
The Indians would cut out your heart and eat it a a sign of respect. Johnson ste the livers to insult the Indians. Pretty damn gruesome either way, but it was the way of it.
Legends live forever
Thank you for this beautiful vista, Ron. I can tell you are relishing the history. It must be indescribable to walk in the footsteps of people you've only read about. I think what they did to Johnson's remains is shameful. They used his body to promote a movie, essentially. Now they monopolize it to make money. It's disgusting. They've appropriated his humanity for the sake of greed.

Redford made the movie on his own land with a low budget in 1972 as a pet project and in talking with him at the former restaurant Zoom that he used to co-own in Park City, he said he never thought it would go anywhere. Nor did he ever promote it as such. He was one of the pallbearers when they moved Johnstons remains to Cody as I recall but am sure that was out of respect versus greed as he had nothing to gain. The real Johnston retired to live with his brother in Hemet, CA (a real pit!) and ended up in some old folks home there before he was transferred to Cody. It is sad that they're now charging to see his grave.

The Missouri River is still treacherous with large tree trunks/branches submerged just below the surface. Stripped tree trunks stuck in the bottom pointing downstream to spear boats going upstream. Unseen dirt bars (like sand bars) that will ground your boat and if you get out to push you could easily step off into 30 feet of fast moving water.

Well, America's story is full of Tall Tales. Great video! I've never been to Yellowstone but did work up at Yosemite National Park for three years and lived deep in the woods. It was an awesome experience. Our National Parks are a sacred treasure.

I live in Woodland, Pennsylvania which is Western Northern central and I remember my Son Brandon had a visitor when he was probably 3 and slept in his room and Brandon described him to me but I never saw him 1st freaked me out but you never know what you get when you buy a house!!! I read that it was no accident that the big bloke put a bullet in his mates head ! It was over a squaw that fink fancied , so he challenged Carpenter to a shooting skill test then killed him !
like I said at the end of this production, only 50% of those stories are truth, at best. there are 3 different versions of Fink and the shooting. we will never know. pick the version you like the best I say! 👍

You looked great in the hat by the way❤ You must have loved to dig into the research at the museum. There was a book/ miniseries years ago called Centennial, it started out with the trappers and mountain men. I believe there was a scene of the Rendez vous you mentioned. Beautiful mountains it's like the Colorado mountains
I'm friends with the man, a retired pastor and school teacher (Tri Robinson) who led a study with his students on Johnson's life. The class found out that Johnson's wish was to be buried in the Rockies, but was buried in Los Angeles, which I guess he would've hated. So Tri and his students led a campaign and effort to move the remains from Los Angeles to Cody, to honor his last wish.

I wonder if Nathan Bender is related to the "Bloody Benders" from the Kansas, Missouri area. I remember that when Robert Redford was pallbearer at Mr. Johnson's funeral.

Hi Ron, I'll bet Bob Edgar would have let you film the gravesite of liver-eating Johnson. He was very knowledge in the Cody area and put a lot of work into trail town unfortunately he passed away period.

You could have flown your drone over the grave. I don't think that the tourist trap people own the airspace.
sorry, but her grave was 2 miles away from the gate, the remote controller signal cannot go near that far.
I fly the most advanced drone on this channel, and have filmed with it many many times here. not on this episode.
and even if I did get it that far, we could not go lower with the drone, further loss of signal, then you have the hill.
