    The director and writer's stated that the reason Allyson is still holding the knife at the end is due to the original movie. Audiences that saw the original movie complained about every time Laurie attacked Michael in the original movie she'd immediately drop the weapon. So that's the reason why Allyson is still holding on to the knife, there's nothing sinister about it.

      I know it’s thrown away in 2018 but still.
      (Not hating btw at all. I enjoyed the commentary VERY much)
      For the lovely ladies, In the original timeline, Laurie and Micheal are separated after Micheal kills their older sister. I assume the parents just have her up for adoption because they couldn’t take care of her with all the stress of Micheal.
      And also to protect her, I mean Micheal did kill his SISTER so, you can only assume that she is in danger
      But if I remember correctly it was added to the second film despite Carpenter not wanting them to be related. Which is kind of why it’s just thrown away. No one likes them being siblings lol

      @Xehanort10 Před 3 lety +8

      @@ashleywilliams4665 No. In the original Laurie and Michael weren't siblings. That was a retcon introduced by Halloween II. It was something John Carpenter regretted writing and I don't blame him because it's scarier that Laurie was a random girl Michael saw when she dropped the key off at his old house and he decided to stalk and kill her and her friends at random than her being his sister, wanting to kill her because of that and only killing her friends for being in the way. You can tell how much the sister twist was a last minute addition to II because the only hints at it were Laurie having a flashback to Mrs Strode telling her she wasn't her mother, visiting Michael at Smith's Grove, Michael stabbing a knife through the sister part of a drawing a kid did of his family and then Marion just tells Loomis "Oh yeah she's his sister."

    Well the main through line is how trauma doesn't affect just one person but the generations that come after too. Laurie became paranoid and protective, her daughter's childhood was completely consumed with paranoia and that's why her rebellion is trying to live as normal a life as possible, and the grand daughter now having to deal with both of their extremely different outlooks and a divided family. Her having the knife at the end was a symbol that the trauma has bleed down to the next generation. This also came out at the height of the Me Too movement and the writers said it's about women taking back their narrative

      @Xehanort10 Před 3 lety +13

      Yeah. Michael didn't care about Laurie. He wasn't after her and just broke out to kill again in general. Laurie was just projecting and assuming that because she wanted revenge on him for killing her friends and trying to kill her he must want revenge on her for stabbing him in the neck with a knitting needle, blinding him in one eye with a coat hanger and stabbing him in the gut with his own knife. And were Michael your usual killer he would. But he's so cold and uncaring that in his mind if he kills someone great but if he doesn't he'll just find another victim.

    The police officer wasn't Annie's dad; he was just one of the responding officers in the first one. Karen wears the Christmas sweater to kind of just move past Halloween because of her mom's trauma. The end where they focus on her still holding the knife is a nod to the original, I think. Laurie kept dropping the knife in the original so in this one the family is smarter now and won't assume evil has been defeated. @Alpha Omega Sorry, this is long. Frank's last name is Hawkins, and Annie's last name is Brackett, so that's how I know Hawkins isn't Annie's dad. Halloween is ruined for the family because of Laurie and her trauma so that's why I think she had the sweater on--kind of like what Vicky said, "If I were you guys, I wouldn't celebrate either. I would just put up a Christmas tree instead." Allyson still holding the knife, to me, was like a parallel to 1978; they've learned to never drop the knife, just in case. Just like in 1978 no one came to the door when Laurie was banging on it and this time when Allyson does the same thing, someone answers--maybe because the community learned from past mistakes? That it could be real and not a prank? I didn't like Halloween 2007. They explained too much and for me, ruined what was mysterious about him...The original makes it seem like he came from a good family but was just a bad seed...I think that's more interesting than just coming from a bad family-I know some killers become killers due to abuse, but I just didn't like it. 2018 wasn't perfect, but for me, it felt more in-line to the original in terms of the story, atmosphere, music, and characters.

It seems pretty clear that she essentially grew up like fucking John Connor, which is maladaptive unless you need to defeat Skynet one day. It is worth remembering that her kid was taken from her by the government - as in, people had to go up to that heavily armored compound and convince a woman who's spent her entire life's income on weapons to let them take her only child from her; they do not do that lightly. Shit was *rough* and you get a solid indication of what it must have been like throughout this - like when Laurie breaks into her house and casually holds her husband at gunpoint for most of the conversation.

    For those interested, there are three separate story lines that starts with the original movie. Two of them has Laurie as Michael's sister:
    1. Halloween, Halloween 2, Halloween 4, Halloween 5, Halloween 6 - Laurie is Michael's sister.
    2. Halloween, Halloween 2, Halloween H20, Halloween Resurrection - Laurie is Michael's sister.
    3. Halloween, Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills, Halloween Ends - Laurie is not Michael's sister.
    The Halloween series was supposed to be an anthology of stories centered around Halloween that were never connected. That's what Carpenter originally wanted. The studios however had noticed the growing popularity of this genre of horror movie so they wanted to do that with Michael Meyers. Carpenter begrudgingly wrote Halloween 2 as sequel to the first. Then the studio wanted there to be a reason why Michael was after Laurie so it was added that they were siblings. During the production of Halloween 2, scenes were added to the TV cut of the first movie, filmed while they were shooting the second. Primarily these additions were hints of Michael's motivation. Somehow Carpenter was able to convince the studio to go back to his original concept for the Halloween series; Halloween 3. Unfortunately for Carpenter the demand for more Michael began so great that the studio never went back to Carpenter's concept again and I don't think he's written/directed another Halloween since.
    Incidentally in the 2018 Halloween (and in the trailers for Halloween Kills) you'll see people wearing skull, witch, and jack-o-lantern masks. These are identical to the same Silver Shamrock masks that were featured in Halloween 3.

    Most serial killers have a target demographic. They go after certain people for reasons known only to them; resembling a condescending parent or unfaithful loved one, being responsible for a personal event in their lives, etc. The terrifying thing about Michael Myers (besides from his apparent immortality) is that he has no demographic. All of his kills are victims of opportunity; there's no way you can track who he's after next, and everyone around him is a potential target.

    In the original sequel which John Carpenter never really wanted to make they came up with the plot twist that Michael was Laurie's brother and regretted it because it killed a lot of Michaels mystique. It's much scarier not knowing why he does what he does and is why this movie does away with that twist early during that conversation her granddaughter has with her friends. That being said I still enjoy some of the original sequels and how 4 and 5 set up Danielle Harris as a future scream queen.

    In Halloween II, they did indeed make Michael & Laurie siblings. The Halloween timeline is...complicated: it's been reset/retconned like 4 times, including this 2018 sequel/reboot. Halloween (2018) ignores all of the sequels previously made and, in doing so, they removed the family ties between them.

    Just a bit of background here. They were brother and sister in the previous sequels, which this film ignores. In the original film (1978), they were never meant to be related. The whole sibling connection was a narrative inclusion for Halloween II (1981) which Carpenter and Hill wrote the screenplay for and produced. This would then become the story arc for the subsequent sequels and would remain so until 2018, where this new sequel would retcon it from continuity. So, they are not related in this new timeline. According to Carpenter, he came up with the sibling idea whilst downing a entire 6 pack beer because he couldn't think of anything else. There was never meant to be a sequel to the original Halloween, but Carpenter was contractually obligated to work on a sequel regardless. And now here we are with currently 10 Halloween films (excluding part 3), soon to be 12 with the 2 upcoming sequels Halloween Kills (2021) and Halloween Ends (2022), both of which take place on the same night as Halloween (2018).

    There's a couple of reasons why the original Halloween doesn't look like a low budget film. The first, obviously, is the fact that you had so many talented people at the beginning of their careers looking to make a name for themselves. Director John Carpenter and cinematographer Dean Cundey, who would go onto lensing films for Spielberg such as Jurassic Park and Hook, were 100% committed to making it look like a big Hollywood production. So, they really went out of their way to make it look as great as it did.
    The other reason is that John Carpenter chose to shoot the film in 35mm anamorphic widescreen as opposed to the cheaper option that most low budget films at the time used, which was 16mm academy flat. The fact that the film was such a beautiful 2.35:1 aspect ratio with amazing production design and lighting made it look 10 times more expensive than it was.

    Yet with that said Halloween Kills definitely makes it feel like he's just a supernatural entity.

    The story of Laurie being his sister was explained in Halloween 2, which I see you’ve just recently watched so you may know already… anyway though,
    “That girl? That Strode girl? That’s Michael Myers sister. She was born two years before he was committed; two years after his parents were killed and she was adopted by the Strodes…”
    So Michael’s parents had 3 children; Judith, Michael, and Laurie(assuming that’s not a name the Strodes gave her after adoption…) We are supposed to assume Laurie was either out in the car when his parents pulled up on the night Judith died, or that she was in the house somewhere… but that’s the only backstory we get.

    Jamie Lee was actually Michael's sister. It's revealed in the second movie by Dr. Loomis. John Carpenter wrote her in as such as a way to create a second film. Rob Zombie continued that narrative as well in his films. For whatever reason that fans didn't understand, the writer of this film changed it and it pissed a lot of people off. The curse of the thorn is what causes him to be so super natural in the need of the person cursed with it to kill off their family just like Jamie Loyyd tried to do in the end of the forth movie when Micheal was incapacitated. However everyone has their own opinion about it and I like Micheal just the way he was written by John Carpenter. 😉
