i know you're not changing the behavior or something this is just an opinion but i honestly wish if the dweller was going quick enough, he would shoulder bash through at least three blocks just to get to you and if you block him successfully, he's gonna back off and charge at the wall over and over just to get to you
My problem with cave dweller is it needs to be slightly less aggressive and spawn less often It’s so aggressive and frequent that it becomes less scary and more just annoying since it’s basically an immediate death sentence And I think some mechanics where it stalks you around corners and quickly runs down halls past you, and stuff would make it a lot scarier

I don't know how to config it exactly. Other sites claim that Cave Dweller is a "highly configurable" mod. Hope I helped because idk if I did.

The speed of this mob seems very balanced, I like that it will outrun you, but it’s JUST slow enough that you might have a chance of being able to make an unlikely escape.
I don't think he's all that good of a mob, he's scary but you can't outrun him which mostly ruins it. He should be around the same speed as you jump running. When he's this quick you can only resort to cheesing him by blocking off a tunnel or putting water down. Something that was mostly fixed with the Warden so you couldn't cheese him at least.
It should do a little less damage, or i'd imagine it gets frustrating being constantly killed especially early game, forcing you to basically never go into the caves or outside at night lol. Also the warden is pure bullshit.

Your paranoia of something being there when there is nothing there is what the horror of minecraft revolves around. Knowing some horrific monster is on its way towards you kinda takes away from that
I was thinking of making a resource pack a tad similar to this, but with the creepy ambient sounds from half life 2, silent hill and a few others, or even further in a few years if I get good at mc modding, I could make an entire cave ambient system with the said hl2-sh ambient noises

you can still kill it if you have a shield and a sword...i feel like its speed is the main horror element that keeps you away from the caves

I tried this mod like at 2 am and it was an experience, and went full panic mode when the cave dweller was just chasing me without stopping
