Funny thing is when I first played through the roman tunnels, I didn't even know Toussaint was an enemy. Every time he talked or shot I just assumed "ah some kind of dark memory made manifest by the magic" because I never got hit by him or ended up close enough to hear the danger music. Then I eventually blew open a door to find two models for his body; one standing still with his shotgun while the other lay dead next to him. I grabbed the shotgun and just assumed this was supposed to be some kind of hallucination scene that got bugged. I never considered that I might have accidentally killed him from the other side of the door. I would only find out that he was a real danger after beating the game and watching other people's playthroughs.
I seem him rambling and chucked a nade at him. Then I found a shotgun and thought I might've killed a potential ally.
😬
You failed successfully
Very similar thing happened to me, didn’t even know he was a threat or physical presence until he shot a door down right in front of me and scared the crap out of me 😂
@@PsydaPretty much what I did and did not expect to kill him immediately. It made me laugh my ass off
This is awesome😂😂😂😂
What’s interesting to me is he’s just a normal guy. He doesn’t have any sixth sense about your location, and he dies in just a couple shots like any human would. Yet the encounter with him still manages to be one of the most chilling encounters in the entire game
i didn't play the game.
But i think i understand what do you mean abou this encounter :
During the whole game, you are trying to get out of the bunker without geeting killed by the beast that is always near. You always have this sensation of stress because of that monster that you can feel walking around, but can't see him coming. When you are going to the ruins, you hear a human yelling. You think at first that's an ally, but no. It's a friend soldier that fall into insanity and shot at everything that makes noise. Like the monster, you can hear his shouting, saw his shadow. It make you realise that even if there are humans in this place, you are on your own, stuck in a place that makes anyone fall into insanity and despair.
He has a belt of shotgun shells, now I know who took all the shotgun ammo 😑
I wonder why we can't just take it from his corpse
@@gusttavoquintasc.desouza2852 Facts, hopefully whenever they update the game it will become a feature
the game would be to easy he has like 50+ shells on him
I’d say like 30 or 35 but yeah still way to op
@@YuNewHandleBarI did a rough manual count and he only has like 11~ shells.
It would be pretty OP, but that's also about the same amount of ammo for the revolver in the whole Bunker so it's not too bad.
My friend streamed me the game and when we got here I was like "oh I know, you have to make him shoot the doors" and then this blind moron decided to shoot the explosive barrel that was in front of him and killed himself.
Needless to say that we laughed our asses off at the sheer stupidity of this situation.
On my first playthrough, I was simply trying to find him, thinking "oh he's probably the final boss or something", then he killed me since I wasn't paying attention. Best part was him blowing a door open with a shotgun, which granted me the achievement related to that. After I shot him, I started laughing at him just falling limp, thinking there were more like him in the tunnels. I still laugh now when I throw a grenade in the dark and just read "*SCREAMING*" in the subtitles, knowing it worked, yet feel bad at the same time.
@james_fisch All my grenades and bullets would be gone, man 😂 I'd be way too scared, and I'd just chuck everything at him
I remember shooting him in the head.
just seeing his silhouette in the fog, lining up my shot and then pulling the trigger. he was mid speech too.
it was just so real, the way he instantly stopped talking and dropped. That and he sound of the gun with the weight of the shot was just so fucking real. I love this game.
The sound and atmosphere are on fucking point in this game
Did you even know he was a threat at this point or did you just see him and were like “fuck that” 😂
I shot him twice in the chest and after the first time he was groaning in pain, trying to regain his composure, which actually made me hesitate to shoot him again because I was really hoping he would surrender but then right before he finally regained his composure I panicked and I shot him again, killing him. When he hit the ground I could hear him gurgle a bit before dying. It made me seriously question whether I just made the right call. Such a well done encounter
@@justafish4452 I had the game spoiled for me sadly.
@@duckman9467 Some of the best
I remember being super on-edge with this sequence. Dude sounded like he was literally everywhere, he's right in your ears when he goes, "Singing and singing...", apart from that you also have these horrifying shadows skulking around. Literally the only threat in this segment is Toussaint but it certainly doesn't feel that way.
I like how his design reflects what a lot of soldiers were perceived like. They were called "Les Poilus", the Hairy, because of their thick facial hair. This game is full of neat little details
I threw a random pot at a corner trying to get his attention and he immediately hit an explosives barrel and blew himself up, whole thing lasted less than 30 seconds
LOL
I really like the design of Toussaint
a blind shotgun wielding man who went insane after seeing something that should not be seen
and also the eye loss after, possibly, seeing something that he shouldn't is a trope that I really like
Lovecraftian Tropes at their finest
Amnesia is one of the finest lovecraftian series of video games.

Fun fact about the roman tunnels
If you look closely, some of the shadows are Ghouls and Wraiths from Rebirth
When I first saw a Wraith shadow, I wasted a bullet on it lmao!
If you ask me, I think Toussaint had it easy, (easier), than the rest of the soldiers in the bunker did. I mean yeah he went mad, gouged his eyes out and will likely starve at some point, but it's probably better than being hunted by a gigantic ghoul that was once your friend.
Hmmm but he doesn't even have the chance to escape or do anything really....if I had to choose, I would try to escape, as Henri did.
@@Dominik0-0but henri escapes just to be captured by the germans, he will probably be killed by the soldiers anyway
@@juliabrand4011eah it's really hard to tell for henri...
@@juliabrand4011 I heard those germans were "more kind" than the others. From another comment on youtube
So Henri might survive...🙏I hope at least
He won't starve to death.
Its implied he drank the otherworldly water albeit at possibly a smaller amount than Lambert did.
Seeing as how he went missing in May if I'm not mistaken and the game starts in July.
His transformation into a ghoul is slow.
The fact that Henri can absorb a shotgun shell is impressive😂😂😂
This guy and then Akers. Frictional really loves having it's human antagonists gouge their own eyes out...
Ackers felt way scarier tho imo
@@mhplayer That's only because of how Akers' AI was designed. Toussaint doesn't really chase down Clemént at any given point in the ruins. He just runs to whatever noise he heard and fires his shotgun. If there's any enemy that can be compared to Akers, it would be the Beast, since they both react heavily to sound, chase down the player, and rely on a tunnel system to quickly get around and ambush the player.
@@the_furry_inside_your_walls639 still though: acker's screaming as he chases you down was panick enducing. Especially when he was substancially harder to escape (ackers runs faster than you and there's little to no place you can go to escape him. Granted, he can be avoided by not doing any sound but he was still terrifying. The foreshadowing was also increadible as they show you his room before him).
Also special mention to when you crash down the escalator and get chased down out of nowhere when yout thought you were safe
Legacy of Event Horizon?
At first i thought, he's my friend, but then he shot me. Its funny because this game plays so many tricks with your mind so you forget some things, or do some bizzarre things. I mean the monster and light generator.
I snuck up right next to him, he chambered a round an I just blasted him before he shot me. I shot twice an missed my second round. He then ran an the fight was on. It was a pretty unique fight, but I found if you just hugged the wall an stayed quite he couldn't find you.
I like the detail of the shells on his bandolieer. Early shotgun shells used brass and later coat waxed paper the common red ones made from plastic only became a thing in the 60s.
Yup. Every video game set in the 1800s- mid 1900s gets this wrong (looking at you, hunt showdown). Does kinda bother me that a French soldier in Europe has a Winchester 1897 trench gun though, but it is possible since the US has made weapons for other countries and if this was after the US got involved in the war. Would’ve been cooler if he had an 1886/93 Lebel (I don’t even think the French fielded a widespread combat shotgun in WW1)
@@arthurleggywulf yea I was thinking about that too, especially since the average person thinks a bolt action rifle is only for sniping or some shit. Just looked at the prologue again and it’s definitely not a lebel. Can’t tell for sure what exactly it is, since the action isn’t shown on screen, but from what I can see of the muzzle the rifle has a cleaning rod under the barrel which the lebel never had since its magazine is there. Possibly a full sized berthier as it has a cleaning rod under the barrel, but many rifles of that era did as well
Do those modern casings smell like burnt plastic when you fire a shotgun? I hate that smell.
I was certain he would’ve been a one hit kill when I encountered him. Having it not be that makes sense for people who don’t want a ball breaking experience, but just the thought of it possibly being a one hit kill made the encounter more tense for me. With that possible chance, I decided to put him out of his insanity with a single clean shot to the head. The way they made guns feel impactful in this game is astounding
What I like is that even though you carry a firearm, it does not make you feel invincible or heroic
every shot has weight and the tremor that follows after with the ringing in the ears is heavy

that about sums it up nicely

Oh dear, I´m not sure If I can live up to those standards
@@umukzusgelos4834 you're doing great already.
I think the fog people you see are both monsters and former protagonists from the amnesia games
Survivors trying to find a way out thru the dark fog by reaching their hands out to feel for a way to guide them
Monsters limping(Maybe injured survivors) and sulking around the dark looking for prey that hides from them
Pretty sure some are the ghouls
@@chaosinsurgency6636 Yes the silhouettes are soldiers, as well as the ghouls and wraiths from Rebirth.
I love this character, I wish they did more with him, making him harder because it was pretty easy with all of the ammo scattered around the place, but it didn’t stop it from creating a very real threat and sense of feeling weak.. Him singing created this creepy feeling as you walk around the ruins.. to only find out he has a shotgun when he shoots a rat.. That feeling of being overpowered is not only bad.. But it’s Fear.. especially when he knows your there.. “Hide and seek is over!” Got me shaking in my boots as I hear him rack the shotgun and getting towards me, reloading the revolver ever so slowly as he keeps singing creepily..
God I love this character, He is the definition of insanity. They did a amazing job creating such a masterpiece.

toussaint doesn’t need autotune 🔥🔥
I never even realised this guy was blind and you can apparently sneak up on him. I just went full FPS mode when he showed up and started blasting and lobbing grenades until he quit shooting back.
His blindness is a bit finnicky though, if you stand in front of him, he will still notice you for some reason, even if you stand still
I just love how terrifying they made a normal dude with a shotgun, while the main monster is an unkillable beast.
If anything, it should be in your advantage since he's blind, but his senses are so well-tuned that you end up sneaking around him in fear.
Well, considering the setting one finds themselves in, a fellow human being who is a little unstable and unpredictable and bears a weapon that outclasses your own should by all means be interpreted as terrifying
@@umukzusgelos4834 Absolutely, further considering there's nothing but darkness in and fog in the area which makes it much more harder to find this gentleman
Could you look at the model of the ghost hallucinations found in the tunnels at some point?
I thought of making a separate video were I want to go over the Lore links between the Amnesia Games, If I have the time to make it I will most likely include them there
There's one that resembles the empress, or at least i'm pretty sure i saw her, maybe my mind was playing tricks on me.
@@Antik554 I know for a damn fact there's a wraith and ghoul model used for those ghost things might have a soldier one too
@@py4762 Maybe you're right, it wasn't the Empress but a Wraith.
A few notes I want to make:
I doubt the tainted water made Toussaint go mad since he’s unable to reach it; I doubt that any of the excavators ever noticed that they were able to enter the crater from the ruins. Also, the water turned Lambert into a pseudo-ghoul creature, so whats to argue that the same fate would happen to anyone who drinks the tainted, ethereal crater water? I think he just went mad, I almost went mad when I forgot that you had to do a box puzzle in order to get out.
Additionally, do you think the Roman Tunnels take place in the Other World, or are intersecting our world and the other world? I’ve never played Rebirth nor the other Amnesia titles but I’ve been thoroughly invested ever since this game came out lol.
The ghostly apparitions also through me for a loop. At first I thought it was him moving around, and I was wondering why my shots weren’t connecting when I obviously headshot him. Then, that’s when it hit me, that I was seeing things. The Roman tunnels aren’t like any other place in the bunker; without the Beast it feels eerie.
I can answer some of your Questions actually;
The Roman Tunnels are on Earth but they are connected to The Dark World through Rifts
traces of these rifts can be seen at the strange, obsidian coloured, vibrating rock formations at the walls of the tunnels,
the same formations are found in the pond at the bottom of the crater were the Mysterious Water lies
the protagonist from the previous Game had a device with them that allowed them to seek out the rifts and cross over between worlds
the water it´self also comes from this other world were it is specifically used to create creatures similar to the Beast in this game it probably leaked into Earth through the rifts at one point were it lay stagnant and undisturbed until the warfare blast open the crater and revealed the spring
Isn't Lambert just a full Ghoul? I mean hes still changing somewhat but hes basically a full ghoul just in the early stages.
@@ghostlyblue5735true, but the water was tainted by the rats, hence why he’s so different
@@jejeakle I don’t think rats did anything, it was just the pure amount of vitae that oversaturated him. It could also be the diluted water not transforming him properly which is why he seems half baked, but it definitely has nothing to do with rats, he doesn’t show any rat like behavior or rat like appearance any different from the ghouls from Rebirth, he just seems much larger because of the Vitae of war. If rats really changed him, he definitely would get larger that simply wouldn’t make sense.
I watched Markiplier play this game and I was like "wait what if we save him" but from watching this video it makes sense you can't save him because he lost his sanity and is trying to shoot you
I never knew Toussaint had a burning death animation, I always just shot him in the head and that'd be it
I had no idea you could kill this guy, I just ninja'd my way through the fog and left him alive and he was super pissed when he realized I was escaping lol
This is a bit old at this point but i wanted to point out the firing animation. Hes not pulling the trigger from what i can tell, hes just pumping the gun and when it comes forward again it fires. Indicating that hes using a trench gun as that was the only shotgun you could do that with. Slam firing a trench gun is taxing on your shoulder if you dont hip fire it. This man has been fighting demons for so long that hes barely affected by the lack of sight. Just an interesting tidbit of info i gleaned from that animation, the devs of this team put a lot of effort into the animation and detail even if you couldnt see him very well. That firing animation is so clean and well done its a masterpiece at this point. The pump animation is when he runs the tube empty and racks another shell, to which he will go into a reload animation immediately either with the left or right hand reload. This man must have been equipped with the shotgun for some time judging by his proficient reloads and the speed at which he can cock that gun, from what i remember some of those trench guns had one hell of a pull to them. Yet he does this with little to no effort. Bravo devs Bravo
That is two Frictionalgames games where an enemy has torn their eyeballs out, out of pure insanity (happens in SOMA aswell)
The whole time i thought the shadows were other people and prayed he wouldnt somehow bump into me
nice, i was looking for something like this yesterday
I knew the moment I snuck over to those rats only for them to get blasted. It’s either him or myself. You read notes about him, saw his eyes he ripped out, you hear his singing get louder and louder. He is lost with whatever supernatural forces are at play. I knew he would blast at whatever sounds he heard.
That entire fight was soaked in genuine panic for me. A trench shotgun at that close of a range, Henry or any soldier would drop dead.
I ended up throwing a brick near a red barrel and shot it as soon as he stopped in front of it.
I wonder if he was one of the cultists that used to be there participating in practices of the cult before the WW 1 took place hence the reason why he started to sabotage once they found the ruins or maybe he was one of the children of the character from previous games?
Because actions of Tuscon are pretty weird if you think about it he was alredy acting weird before they discovered these ruins.
I think he was just a bit mentally unstable prior, mostly because of trauma from the war. And then the whispering from the other world got to him. He used to just be an normal drafted French soldier. I feel like his story is more of Frictional's attempt to show the awful sides of war, while the monster is the more straight forward monster enemy.
no
As far as I remember from the Dark Descent, the cultists who had any type of connection to the Other World eventually dissapeared at least before the 18th century, and only a very few who had direct connection or were even beings from the Other World knew anything related to it (like Mandus, who is a descendant either from Daniel or Alexander). So he probably was just a common footsoldier who went insane do to the supernatural
A closer look on SOMA monsters plz? Specially Jin Yoshida. Thanks.

Ok don't hesitate to correct me if i'm wrong
I think that the fact that Toussaint Beaufoy is using a shotgun is historically incorrect: because the story take place in 1916 and the shotgun was a weapon introduced in WW1 by the United States but they only arrived in the war against Germany during 1917
Bro im so glad im not the only one who saw the shadow people after we killed him. I thought i was crazy cause i couldnt find a video or mention of them anywhere. I thought the blind guy somehow survived so i never came back to that room.
That guy shot me in the head twice. And i somehow survived...
My first playthrough I actually greeted this dude with open arms like a dumbass, picture this: it's late at night and the only light you have is coming from the screen, when you're in the dark claustrophobic bunker with nothing but rats, the sounds of artillery and the beast to keep you company, the feelings of isolation, loneliness, and despair are cranked to 11 (I swear the game starts to actually wear on your mind the longer you play it like this) so when I heard his mad ramblings I legitmately ran to his voice, my mind filled with thoughts of no longer being alone in this tomb of stone, blood, and destruction.
As I got closer and slowed down to walk he said he could hear me, I thought he might have a shred of sanity left only for him to turn around and put me in the dirt with his shotgun instantly, I loaded a save and once again I was overtaken by the despair and loneliness, despite there being another person in the bunker, I still had no friend.
I commend your bravery, I for once felt deeply unsettled by his ongoing gravelly singing after getting so accustomed to artillery bombing and rustling dust coupled with the Stalkers guttural Garble Warbles
I saw the Apparitions in the Area and mistook them for him, so it took me a long time to even progress in that area and meet him in person
@@umukzusgelos4834 In regards to the shadowy apparitions, they're the reason I said the game begins to wear on your mind when you play it late at night with the lights off for extended periods, even after I left the Roman tunnels and went back to the bunker I swear to god that I was still seeing the apparitions, that's when I knew I had to take a break.
(I had been playing for nearly 4 hours straight at that point)
Amnesia the bunker is such a great horror game, especially for someone like me who's a lil bi**h when it comes to horror, it had my full attention and terrified me throughout, though for me it wasn't the beast being scary
(granted the beast is definitley scary as hell)
It was the fact I was completely and utterly alone, trapped in a dark cruel maze with seemingly no escape, no matter what happened in the game I made sure I always had one last revolver bullet...if you know what I mean...
Seriously an amazing game, I can't stress it enough.
P.S sorry for rambling on much like Toussaint, but I just wanted to add these are great videos, I appreciate getting a proper look at the beast and Toussaint, cheers!
Still not sure how a French solider has an American trench gun but it is an awesome shotgun so i won't question it
Eh at least it's a correct time period firearm as it was produced and used during said war and era. I do wish they would have added a Lebel to use, but that's me just being a history nerd lol.
Ive not played amnesia the bunker yet but i can feel the terror of being hunted by someone withna shotgun and judging by the thumbnail someone blind with a shotgun.
If this game was any more realistic, that belt of shells he'd bore on his body would've all gone off and torn apart every horizontal surface in that room due to the fire of the infernal petrol and thus, it's heat emission.
Очень странно что с Тусена нельзя взять патроны для драбовика, а зарежать драбовик можно только найденными патронами.😐
Spoiler for the game:
During my playthrough at a call with a friend, we both had an epiphany our lad has been huffing and puffing some smoke or whatever gas is in this area.
After looking what possibly looks like amnesia sillohuetes or ghosts appearing in the smoke. We were merely seeing illusions or visions that could make us mad. So I checked my inventory and wore my gas mask. Everything was fine. Our boy in the Roman tunnels wasn't and this was possibly what got him this way. I hiding in one of the spots only for him to trolick to a door next to my spot. He slowly turned to look at me. Apparently me Crouching staying silent isn't enough for the man that is now blind (probabaly good hearing) spotting me. So I had to put him to rest. Amnesia Bunker was really crazy and was my first ever playthrough of the series and I really enjoyed it. Probabaly one of the most semi realistic horror tragedies of what happened to the French soldiers
I didn't ever think to use the molotov
I never got to encounter him. I heard an explosion after he shot the rats and then there was just a shotgun laying on the ground but no body to be found... so I thought that part was in the script.
well, lucky you
Was i the only one who didnt start seeing the shadows until after i beat the shotgunner and started trying to shoot the shadow people?
I initially thought that the fog mightve had some chemical in it
Great videos bro!
I have a request, could you please take a look at the trapped German soldier? I would like to see his face!

Still scary this guy.
Something interesting about Toussaint is that you don't need to kill him to pass the game. You can obtain the detonator by just being sneaky, since, you know, he's blind xD The devs even include voice lines in chance you leave the roman tunnels without killing him, in which he can alternate between cursing Henri or pleading for him to not leave him alone.
"I´m not finished with you, come back here!"
"I´ll find you! I promise, I´ll find you!"
"Come back you Coward!"
Do the guy thats trapped in the jail cell next!

My guess is the strange apparitions in the area are ghouls on the other side of the rift. It's clearly a weak-point between worlds if the rocks from the Other World are there and the presence of the Shadow in the last stretch of the game should you fall in the pit. I don't think it's the Other World itself, or there'd be more than Harvester fluid and phantasms, but the architecture suggests that it was at one point opened up the same way Herbert entered the Other World, through an astrological event that only happens irregularly, and perhaps the buildings themselves came through or the people from that other world established something there (that seems less likely, but it could be), or maybe just the Romans who possibly worshipped them (we see signs of Roman architecture in Rebirth around these rifts as well).
But yeah, the apparitions kind of look like people, but their stance is awkward, which makes me think ghouls. I can't imagine what else they could be. This game takes place before Rebirth, so it's *possible* the Other Worlders are still alive, but I doubt it. They likely died off as far back as Ancient Rome. Suppose it depends on how long Alexander was trapped in the "real" world.
Is it possible to get past Toussaint without killing him?
Yes
Yes, just place the box for escape and explose the door where the detonator is with à grenade or brick, after that goes to the little hole and take Lambert's dogtag and doll, after that just do the same route where you came from and quickly to not get shot at
Yep, he even says unique dialogue as you leave
You know he doesn't need to look that scary because he can FUCKIN LOAD A SHOTGUN BLIND! I really wonder how he did not blow himself up sooner. Or even worse, shoot something or someone he wasn't supposed to.
When you watch Toussaint burning at 2x speed, it's actually pretty hilarious 😂.
I want to hear his reaction to Henri’s voice yelling out “YOU CAN’T FUCKING SING TOUSSAINT”
*french cussing incoming
so how many times he needs to shoot before he starts reloading?
I believe it´s twice

I am wondering, how did the French get an American pump action shotgun before the American joined in the war. I thought 1897 shotgun was American only weapon by the time of 1917
Maybe, maybe, MAYBE it was privately-owned and brought into the war that way. Soldiers would (rarely) bring shotguns for the purposes of hunting small game prior to 1917, never really for combat though.
But yeah they shoulda just given him a Lebel rifle or something, would've made just as much sense.
@@ScotterationRetard or a double barrel shotgun that was pretty common civilian gun in Europe. I think pump shotgun at the time would be too pricey and "exotic" for Europeans. Let alone someone officer would bring it to the battlefield from his private collection. Also double barrel shotgun would suits better for the gameplay purpose where you only have 2 shells at most to shot
