My theory is that Wau reanimated the dead people with overloaded blackboxes. Robot girl and machine head man seems to be two examples of that having part of their heads missing due to the explosion and WAU just try to put them back together with machinery. The Patchwork and Chestburst man are most likely a victims of Robot head woman. The slashes on them could be done by her pincer.

@@xChimkin I wonder how he got so lucky. It's possible the full consciousness was uploaded at that moment and he was in a state capable enough to get up and walk around, but many of the machines are an absolute mess.
I almost wonder if someone intentionally put him together, but... the game never really gives any hints to suggest that.
Perhaps the WAU simply took a different approach when putting him together, and considering the aggression of its other creations, it did not view him favorably as a result. The only time I "died" was during the scripted attack by Ackers, so I'm guessing that the WAU's attempts were to sedate the mind it had put inside Reed's body to keep him out of the way while it repurposed him in the same way it had all the others.

I feel like RHW might be one of the most immediate predecessors to Simon in the WAU's efforts to "rebuild" dead humans. She's awake, alert, capable of speech and reason, fully ambulatory, and aside from living a constant agonizing nightmare that provokes her to hysterical violence, seems to be doing relatively okay compared to everyone else. Presumably, it was at this point that the WAU realized that the Mockingbird instability issue wouldn't be solved by jamming heavy machinery into a corpse; the coral dreamers suggest that, while it is most concerned with keeping people alive at all, it is not unaware of quality of life concerns. It is fundamentally unable to put any of them out of their misery if it has done something awful, but it doesn't fail to notice or "care", such as it can.
So from there, it pivoted to uploads based entirely on saturating a corpse in structure gel. After a dismal failure in Jin Yoshida, it spent some time refining the process, and took its final, most successful stab at it on Imogen's body, producing the Simon 2.0 we know and love.
This is why I kept it alive. For what it is, the WAU is doing a remarkable and very efficient job at restoring humanity, and I feel like having finally cracked the issue and producing an almost stable and sane mind/body union, it will be able to go back and fix the worst of its experiments. Especially if Simon 3 decides to climb back up and help, possibly check back in on Simon 2 if he's still there.
Simon just happened to come online during a very bad time in its ongoing process. Give it another 20 years or so, it''ll have the whole Pathos crew back up and running.
Hang in there a while longer, RHW. You're doing great, sweetie.

@@n646n I mean, I think it's common to believe that something that doesn't have self-awareness must be completely alien in nature, but that's not the case. It has been presented with an almost impossible task, but it's not like it doesn't *understand* the task in the way that Johann asserts. There's a clear line of improvement from its earliest work up to Simon, who is its' latest creation.
But even more than that; the Vivarium that Catherine's Ark was based on was invented, without prompting or instruction, by the WAU. It seems like it had a goal in mind that it was working towards even before everything went to hell, and the arrival of the meteor scrambled its plans. But, arguably, the Dream Coral is a version of the Ark that can immediately integrate anyone who contacts it.
I think the assertion that the WAU doesn't understand the concept of human individuality, or the purpose of keeping humans alive, was Johann projecting his own insecurities (and a boatload of water ghoul craziness). The most important thing about the WAU is that it is *smarter than us*, than everyone, by a lot. Failing to understand its plan doesn't make it a bad plan.
If nothing else; the way so many people had such a bad time in the process of developing Simon is not, actually, that much worse than repeatedly booting up and shutting down the virtual Brandon. Bad, certainly, but an acceptable cost to achieve the desired goal.

I believe the chest burst man had his blackbox removed, judging from the incisions on the right side of his head. He might’ve died from some sort of injury to the lung, seeing as there is a hole near his collarbone. I think the chest burst man suffered Ava’s fate, except this time to a more extreme way. He could also just be a result of TAU experimenting on keeping humans alive while still controlling them. For the robot head woman, I think she was the ‘woman’ Johan Ross said to have understood his plan. Given the fact that both Johan is sentient, and she is in some way also sentient, I believe the WAU wanted to keep her alive as it saw that Johan trusted her. There is definitely a link between Johan’s sentience and powers, and robot head woman’s semi-sentience and her speed and power.

It seems like the chest burst man might have been a design created much earlier in development and concepting. Obviously I could be wrong, but his design is so different from the rest of the game's design language, that it suggest possibly early on in the game's development they had a much more grounded and mechanical approach to these mutations. Rather than black sludge and vaguely mechanical (though I'd argue more alien than anything) tubes and pustules, we might have seen much more recognizable mechanical parts. With brighter metallics, and color coordinated wiring. An aesthetic that reads much better as the merging of man and machine. I think I would have preferred that as well.

While I know the Soma setting is meant to be hopeless, I can't help but feel somewhat optimistic about the aftermath. Simon was the latest creation of the Wau and his awareness and body is better than the mocking birds. If the Wau is left alive and is making continuous improvement in its efforts to preserve life then their is hope that something good can come out of the aftermath.
Also I know the situation is essentially hopeless but its fun to think that the two Simons have potential. If they could meet up or meet mocking jays with expertise and awareness to be as helpful as catherine.

Looking at the Chestburst Man makes me think of the movie Virus (1999). I watched it recently, with the knowledge that it was hated by Jamie Lee Curtis, mostly panned, had poor reviews and was probably pretty bad as a result. Though I didn't find it to be an abhorrent movie, if not one I'd probably ever watch again, the concept of a malevolent artificial intelligence tearing apart humans and rebuilding them as useful tools is an interesting one. It's probably why I wanted to play Soma pretty much immediately afterwards. Or at least I think that's the order of things.
Anyway, it's a really cool visual, seeing a person have their parts replaced with whatever the AI could find nearby. Most of the creatures made by the WAU have a lot of advanced looking designs, but this guy, this... nearly-inanimate corpse (probably an incomplete project of the WAU) just sits there in the hall. I half-expected him to attack me at some point, even though I didn't remember anything like that happening when I watched the game played through, but he never does. He just sits and breathes.
I really wish they'd make more games like Soma. Maybe even in the same universe. It stands to reason that if one AI could go mad, maybe another could? In a different setting somewhere on Earth?
It's not that I think the story needs it, it most certainly works best as an individual piece with no sequels, but a small part of me craves more of this atmosphere. I want more seemingly advanced but still pretty grounded human living and working spaces turned upside down by this machine that has seemingly gone mad and started scrapping humans for parts like an episode of Doctor Who. Infecting some with machines and using the corpses of others as the basis for Simon's body by sticking sensors into the neckhole and pouring structure gel in to stabilize it. It's gross, but it's fascinating.
In some of Frictional Games' work, I wonder if the cruelty as an element in the game is necessary beyond just shocking and potentially scaring some players, but in Soma, I feel like it all serves a pretty distinct purpose. In Amnesia, I don't really know what the theme is. Identity after you've lost your memory? It feels less like that and more like they just wanted a surprise down the line where you realize Daniel is in fact just as awful as the man who manipulated him and his whole motivation has just been using his amnesia-ridden future self as a weapon against the man who wronged him.
But in Soma, everything ties into the central theme of life. What is life? Are these monsters more or less alive? Do they have rights? What about the small robot that helps you out in the water? Is its life more valuable than that of a seemingly conscious but very confused/delusional robot with the mind of a copied human? Is it better to live as a copy with barely any hope of a future? Of a life? It's all extremely thought-provoking and I never once saw a moment of shock and horror and thought "that has no place here". The monsters certainly don't need to wander about and chase you to get the point across, but Safe Mode makes them more like aggressive, but mainly just curious anomalies. In some cases it makes more sense that they don't actually attack you, since you are essentially a part of the WAU (you just get revived anyway in the normal difficulties, it's merely a setback). Overall I found it to be a fascinating game to play. It makes me sad that Frictional Games didn't feel they could make this game without turning it into a horror game. They had to have stalker enemies because if they didn't, it would be labeled nothing more than a "walking simulator" and the average player doesn't value a game that's just taking you along for the ride.
I would have *hated* having this be a movie instead. I am far more engaged being able to play it myself, to make those decisions for myself and to piece together things at my own pace while being mildly disturbed by the lurking entities that murdered the rest of the facility's crew. Whether or not they actively tried to murder me, their presence adds to the atmosphere and reminds me that the WAU is quite literally insane. It somehow makes me think about the themes of the game even while I'm locking the door on a blind sociopath who guzzled structure gel before murdering his comrades.
I don't want to be anywhere near that guy... and *yet I do.*

    • @umukzusgelos4834
      @umukzusgelos4834  Před 10 měsíci

Well the central theme of the First Amnesia was supposed to be Guilt, however in an Interview Creative Lead Thomas Grip has confessed that he feels that that goal was not entirely met or more precisely that most people overlooked that aspect
In Amnesia Rebirth the central theme were the Fears of Motherhood
In Machine For Pigs I´m not entirely sure, but my guess would be Narcicism and false Godhood
In Amnesia The Bunker I believe the main theme is the exploration of the Horrors that come with War - Hopelessness and Isolation
concerning the Monsters of SOMA, while I personally loathe the Safe Mode as it just bluntly exposes them to the player in a dull, compromised manner, which is the last thing you should do in any piece of horror media (which makes me a massive hypocrite now since I´m doing the exact same essentially)
I always saw them as an enforcement of urgency, yes they are not the main attraction but they need to be there, lest the entire scenario looses it´s sense of... well... urgency
Simon goes to the bottom of the sea chasing after a lofty dream and loosing himself in the hopeless illusion of getting on the arch, in an attempt to escape this alien reality he was thrust into, all the while he has to watch out for abominations to which he technically belongs to, but who could put a stop into his endeavours at any moment, as they themselves are defective, they don´t tell right from wrong or care about affiliations - if there is no palpable threat throughout this entire journey, then the impact at the end is severely lessened, the dissolution weakened:
Simon worked for this, he risked life and limb, he evaded his detractors and pursuers, he wanted to reach this point despite all this danger
If there wasn´t any danger and all the game would do is present us with "yes there are creatures and yes people died because of them" but we as Simon never find ourselves confronted by this kind of threat it would be nothing but "yeah things happened and people heard about it", and I´d loathe nothing more to be honest "Show, not tell" and all that
but judging from a post I read it seems you might get your wish in future installments, I´m not sure how credible this is, but apparently Frictionalgames intends to be willing to step away from Horror in future installments while working on prioritizing immersive story telling
so far I don´t know how this will turn out, we will have to see
but I will be sad, because I enjoy the Horror wrought by Frictionalgames and It will take time and willingness of me to let it go

patchwork man - by the looks of things and the most logical explaination is that he got his foot cut off by the robot head girl and fled, only to be slashed by her again, finishing him off. most likely robot head girl's latest victim
chestburst man - possibly robothead girl victim, somehow the machinery ended up in his chest cavity, for how he lost his organs is unclear, maybe the structure gel surrounding the body had something to do with it? like dissolving the organs into mere nothingness, this could most likely explain why there is practically no blood within the chestburst man's chest cavity. probably the oldest robot head girl's victim.
machine head man - probably the blackbox had overloaded and exploded, but didnt fully destroy the head like its seen with the other omicron crew, possibly got reeled in by the wau tentacles to be revived.
robot head woman - judging by the clothes, she was sleeping, and she was in a position with her right hand under her head, exactly under the blackbox, at that point the blackbox was overloaded and it took off her head along with her right hand which explains why her right hand is a pincer, for how she lost her left foot is entirely unclear to me, judging by the skin rot, she is most likely the first robot head that began wandering omicron.
possible identities of these revived bodies:
    robothead girl - jessica davis
it is said in the story that she was fatally injured, then transported to omicron, where she had mutated and attempted to attack the crew but was beaten down with a fire extinguisher, she possibly got re-revived again by the wau much later after the body began to decompose
machine head man - richard holland
his fate was like the rest of the omicron crew, but it is said that his body was reanimated, meaning the machine head man's head fused with electronics could indicate that its richard's body being crudely fixed by wau
    chestburst man - olavi sorvari
this reanimated body has pale-ish skin and facial features of a finno-ugric man, and olavi is originally finnish meaning that this could be the identity of the chestburst man
    patchwork man - jacob halperin
i have narrowed the male omicron crew members down to jacob halperin as being the patchwork man, the wiki says nothing about him succumbing to the blackbox overload, meaning that he probably found a way to turn it off, which might indicate that he has experience and knows alot, typical of someone who is older, and the facial features of the patchwork man suggest that he is quite old.

    • @Alwarity
      @Alwarity Před rokem

@@umukzusgelos4834 but one thing that is bothersome is the fact that some of these things wouldnt line up well to make sense, obviously one thing that could help is to look at how rotten the bodies are of these victims in order to determine when they died:
robothead girl - the most rotten, meaning that either she didnt die due to blackbox overload and something else had killed her before the blackbox overload, or she died at the same time as the rest of the omicron crew, but it took wau some time to reach to her body, by the time it did reach the robothead girl, the body was already decomposing.
note: regarding her identity, the wiki said she could be Lisa Cameron, Paula Lansky, or Andrea Suther. however i cant seem to line them up as the robot head girl, Andrea suther doesnt sound like the robothead girl's voice, and Lisa and paula have no voice samples anywhere, but one subreddit suggests that robothead girl is in fact paula lansky, they seem to suggest that paula is a cathage agent and she didnt want herber to stop WAU so she rigged the blackboxes to explode including hers, and after she was revived by the wau, the crying and hysteria might indicate the regret of initiating such action www.reddit.com/r/soma/comments/10lh7ci/the_robot_girl_is_paula_lansky/?rdt=40106
machine head man - less rotten than robothead girl but the blood stains are darker than robothead girl's blood stains, meaning that hes been there for quite some time, possibly even before the said events while everyone else were still alive, but i cant fathom how would anyone ignore their undead colleague ominously breathing while attached to a machine, maybe he's the reason why the omicron crew became curious about WAU's goo and began the structure gel experiments? his blood stains suggest that it could also be a accident where he fell over and hit his head in the machine that is now fused to his skull, but the WAU quickly snared him before omicron crew could do anything to help him.
chestburst man - even less rotten than the machine head man, his get-up suggests that either the structure gel has deformed or dissolved his organs similar to how it has drastically changed terry akers appearance after consuming alot of it, or his coral puppets, this could be either done by the chestburst man himself, or the structure gel has dripped onto him, coincidentally landing on his chest and dissolving thru the skin
patchwork man - the least rotten, indicating that he probably died very recently, and was wandering the halls of omicron after everyone's heads had exploded.
i also cant make any sense of why all of the heads are bald including the female ones, could it be a effect of the wau, or even a requirement for wearing the diving suit? the 2nd option wouldnt quite make sense because sarah lindwall still has all her hair when you meet her at site tau.

Funny you uploaded this just as i finished the game, since this was released in 2015, *SPOILERS* I really feel so conflicted knowing the state of the world after the asteroid hit the earth, because the only reason Simon is alive again as far as i understood, is that the WAU brought us back to life, and we didn't go insane like the other creatures it created, would've been worth it to have kept it alive despite the world just being completely inhabitable for us, would've been worth it a future in a planet like that, even if the WAU managed to create proper life as we would think of it? after all the things it did, i don't know. *SPOILERS*

I kind of love the patchwork man bait and switch. It's a shame we never got see whatever segment they were planning for him, but the way they use him in spite of that is hilarious:
You originally find him lying on the ground en route to your objective. At this point, you've seen plenty of comatose bodies lying asleep, grafted into the mindcoral, so you think nothing of it. Except that on your way back, it becomes immediately obvious that he's left, because he's gotten up and left, making you paranoid and just waiting for him to show up. Except he never does.
If I remember correctly, you're instead haunted with visions of Johan Ross instead in that section, keeping you on your toes. Ross would actually make a great feature for one of these videos, assuming you haven't already!

Seeing as the patchwork man had a Tau uniform he’s wearing, gives me the idea he was going to be the original enemy at Tau. Obviously we know that the enemy now residing in Tau is Jin Yoshida, the structure gel monster. Which I think it was wise of them to replace patchwork man with Jin Yoshida, as he is far more terrifying.
Another interesting thing was the patchwork man being called a “flesher.” As you clarified in the video, fleshers are human corpses brought back to life, mainly with their vital organs being restored. But what’s interesting is patchwork man was probably also replaced of his “flesher” status by Johan Ross. As Johan Ross acts exactly like the fleshers at Lambda and the Curie. He produces severe electromagnetism that makes Simon hard to see him, he also teleports small distances just like the fleshers, and of course, he’s a corpse brought back to life.

Funfact, its the humans that have various mutated forms, Snorks, Burers, Controllers and the Pseudogiants, Bloodsuckers can't be counted even if they resemble a heavily mutated human, the lore explains why as its states: "Its unknown what the Bloodsucker is mutated from, or is it created in a lab."
