Welcome to another drum-tec "custom mods" video! Today we´re swapping out the Roland TD-17KV´s sound module with an ATV xD3.
A CY-13R was added to the kit for improved playability & 3-zone triggering on the ride ("TD-17KV Big Ride edition" as we call it).
All Roland / ATV pads are fully compatible with both ATV & Roland sound modules, so there´s (hardly) any limitation for creative cross-platform custom kit setups!
You can find this exact kit or any of the kit components in the drum-tec online shop:

Your playing on the intro is inspiring Ralph, in my opinion your most tasteful and buttery smooth demo I've heard man alive that sounded so good! I'll be happy when I get back to drumming I was able to source a used roland and saving for the atv module from your site! I'll post some videos for you to check out in the future maybe you can give me some tips lol
Either you got the trigger setup better or maybe my ears are lying to me... But the whole triggering and the capture of hard&soft hits seem to be better with the Roland pads! I liked this demo better than the whole ATV combos (some of the softer nuances were kinda being eaten by the louder sounds, which is not happening this time). Anyway, excellent video as always! Looking forward to hear the new ATV kits
Thank you Andre, glad you liked it! :)
The sound is very good.
Love this setup for the price. Only the name is a joke ;) BIG RIDE 13 Inch?
"Big Ride" in this case refers to the standard CY-8 pad being replaced by a CY-13R, which has the 3 zone ride functionality & actually is 1" bigger in diameter. But you are right, it still is no 22" ride ;)
Tennis ball beater , Haha ! Good one👍🏾
It´s not quite a tennis ball, but reduces unwanted bouncyness in the bass drum pad reboud:

You are using the CY-5 Hihat/ FD-9 hihat controller here in the video.
Does the Atv cable snake from Ad-5/Xd3 have these 2 input cables standard?
Or are you using drum splitters? Because the Atv hihats are using only 1 cable.
Hi Chico, the ATV hats also use 2 cables (Controller/pad) actually. Kind regards!
@@drumtecTV Ok how is the triggering with the Roland Cy-5 hihat?
Great playing!! Would the Roland VH10 Hihat work with the xD3 module as well or is it only the CY5? Thanks!
Hey Lucas, I guess it would work, but to make sure please get in touch through service@drum-tec.de! Kind regards
@@drumtecTV I did and it seems to work but not great... Many thanks anyway!!
this seems to trigger tight as
Maby a stupid question but is this module working better with this Roland td-17KV set? Or is a Atv EXS-3CY a better option for using the atv xd3 module?
Does anyone know where I can buy a head for a KD-9? Mine has a big dent now.
Can the xd3 use the splitter cables from your website to expand the drum kit further?
Please get in touch through service@drum-tec.de regarding this question! Kind regards
I have the money for kvx. I am a beginner. Which of the two versions do I recommend for kv or kvx? .
I personally have the KV with the Roland CY-13R Crash / Ride. So you have almost the same as the KVx and it's cheaper. But the KVx would then have to be more extensive in terms of tools and sounds. Otherwise the KV is completely sufficient for me as an advanced drumer. Is also btw luxury for the price.
Do you have any knowledge about using Roland TD-10 pads and cymbals with your sound modules? I’m trying to decide whether or not to keep my TD-10 kit. Thanks!
- Tim
Hi Tim, generally speaking, all contemporary Roland pads should be compatible with the ATV sound modules. Since the TD-10 is quite old, I cannot give any first hand experiences, but you can get in touch through info@drum-tec.de and try to get some more info from our service team! Kind regards
I have a question. Did you have to adjust the pad type and sensitivity for the roland pads with the atv module or did you just plug in and play?
Hey Ronnie, the xD3's trigger settings are rather basic / limited, so the amount of adjustments has been pretty small as far as I remember. You might get in touch through experts@drum-tec.de though to get more info on this. Kind regards!
I upgraded my TD-17KV with a CY-15R. Is this a stock module? What a great idea to upgrade the sounds pretty much for free (if I sell my TD-17 module)
Hey Michael, the module in the demo is a standard ATV xD3 module, which is fully compatible with all Roland / drum-tec pads:
www.drum-tec.com/atv-xd3-electronic-drum-module
But be aware that it's functions & features are very limited compared to a Roland TD-17: The tom pads have only single zone functionality with the xD3, you cannot change any instruments or edit any sounds, nor add fx to the drumkits. You only have the kit sounds "as they are" and no possibility to mix/edit/add fx, the module only has a stereo output & no separate direct outs for live/recording. Kind regards!
How did you connect the extra cymbal?
@@rickardcox8868 There are an aux cymbal and tom ports on the back of the module.
@@michaelday6987 thank you! But I am planning on adding a ride cymbal that needs also bell function
@@rickardcox8868 you move the cymbal that you use for the ride to extra cymbol spot and plug the 3 zone ride into the ride slot that you just opened up
Hey man, really loving the playing. I have a quick question that I think you may be able to help me with, cant find an answer anywhere!
I have a Roland Td17KL and the dual zone ride is really bothering me. I want to upgrade it to a CY-13 Ride and plug it into the extra cymbal input on the cable snake (or move my current cymbals arround appropriately).
Anyway what Im wondering is, will the module support the three trigger functionality? Cheers man
Thank you! You'll have to use the ride on the ride channel (which has two cable inputs), otherwise you'll only get two zones (with one cable). You can use the CY-8 as a second crash on the crash 2 input. Kind regards!
@@drumtecTV cheers man, didn't realise I had an extra input away from the cable snake. Ordering a new ride now :)
@@joecfcfantastic jus to clarify: You are using a TD-17 module, not an ATV xD3 like in this demo?
@@drumtecTV yes I am using the td17 module
@@joecfcfantastic ok then it's no problem, the TD-17 has two separate trigger inputs (Crash 2 & AUX). Kind regards & happy drumming!
Is there a way to download this demo songs?
Hey Arturo, I will be releasing all songs/tunes I have used for the drum-tec demos as drumless versions in the near future. You can stay up to date by subscribing to my private channel digitaldrumming if you haven't yet:

@@drumtecTV Nice I am already subscribed I love your content 💙
You can't change the kits though, roland does everything.
You can get this exact kit or any custom kit configuration from drum-tec! :)

can CY-13R Ride work with td-17 module ?
Hey John, sure! It actually comes with the Roland TD-17KVX kits by standard :) You can find more info here:

Kind regards!
this module works with roland vh12 hi hat pad?
Please get in touch through service@drum-tec.de for this question, I am not sure if VH-12 will work on the xD3 module unfortunately. Kind regards!
I don't understand why some kits in the module use the same snare?
You are right, the amount of different sounds is a little limited. But there has been a new update for the xD3 module with 9 new kits (demo coming soon) :) Kind regards!
@@drumtecTV Now that's good to hear!
Sounds a lot like the old Alesis PRO drum module sounds.
Hi, I don´t know which module you are referring to (DM10, Strike Pro module? Maybe there is another older model that I have not experienced), but sound apart: no Alesis module comes close to the triggering & playability of a Roland or ATV module in my experience. Kind regards!
hmm it seems like downgrade for me....still much better TD17
Hi Zac, it´s actually neither an up- nor downgrade as such :) just another option which is fully compatible & in this case a little more affordable than a standard TD-17KV kit, although it comes with the additional 3-zone CY-13R ride:
www.drum-tec.com/roland/atv-drum-tec-edition-big-ride
www.drum-tec.com/roland-td-17kv/mds-4v-advanced-e-drums-with-live-sound-edition
So in the end, it´s all a matter of personal taste & budget :) Kind regards!
