You don’t have to cheese it and get every top pick and make 100 moves, but there’s zero reason to not at least sign a 1y MLE guy every year, or if there’s a younger guy then a multi year deal. You can flip them or use them and flip someone else for an upgrade…no downside to using your MLE for a 1y deal or ideally even a 1-1 (2y w second yr TO) at all.
Those teams deeper in the sim are insane, like 9+ guys that are all 83+ with multiple stars. Pretty hard to compete w those teams if you aren’t making at least small upgrades when you can, trading guys you plan to let walk in a package for a young guy on a multi year deal or whatever it may be. Tough to lose those salary slots and not have multiple 80+’s to package together. And it’s usually not great to draft in the 20s or late teens when it’s so easy to move up. That can be the MLE signing with a guy you’re gonna let walk plus whatever mid to late 1sts you have and you can grab at least say pick 6.
Or trading your high 1st for someone that has 2-3y left on their rookie deal with high potential and a good overall. The auto gen drafts are usually pretty top heavy. Some years there’s nothing special, but sometimes you’ll see a crazy 84 overall monster. I know it’s tough to try and balance being semi realistic and not cheesing super hard vs not doing enough. I totally get it, and nobody wants to see you just get 7 85-95 overalls and cycle through them once they turn 30. Maybe should at least take advantage of the small stuff though.
The main reason I posted this was not using your MLE in multiple years which is obv small, but it adds up and there’s 0 reason not to. A team that’s good IRL that has their MLE is gonna use it, or before the new CBA made it tough to use the TMLE and reduced the amount of it, teams basically always used it. Before they made it to where second apron teams couldn’t use it, it was a rly valuable tool. I think it was around 6.4-6.5M Y1 the year before they changed it, and good teams (especially ones not deep in the tax w cheaper owners) either used it to grab a decent role player, signed someone that could be useful but also is a 6.5M expiring if they want to move them, or take a chance on a younger guy.
LAL used theirs on Lonnie Walker for 1y, they’ve always been rly bad at cap mechanics. They never used their MLE or TMLE to get max team control on 2nd round guys or undrafted guys before the rule changed, they just never seemed to prioritize team control. They should’ve signed Monk to 2y TMLE instead of giving it to Lonnie, or if Monk wouldn’t do 2y, then signed Lonnie to a 2y deal with 2nd yr TO instead of just a 1y. Lonnie had no real market at that time above the min or maybe the BAE, but instead of taking adv of that and doing a 1-1 deal, they just did a 1y deal for whatever unknown reason. Team control is important and so is having a guy for 2y if you want, that way you at least can offer the early bird rights deal that’s usually a bit above the MLE. If you have a guy for 1y at the TMLE and they do well, you’re not gonna be able to retain them. The 120% non bird rights isn’t enough, I think the final TMLE was 6,479,000. So the most you can give a guy after 1y is 7,774,800 Y1 and it’s pretty unlikely that’ll matter.
Vs having them for 2y where you can offer them the early bird deal like the deal AR got, it’s almost always a bit more than the full MLE Y1 plus 8% raises instead of 5%. If they got Monk to take a 2y TMLE deal, it’s possible they could’ve retained him. SAC signed him for 2/19.4M. The MLE that year was 10,490,000. It was 12,405,000 this year and if Monk signed 2y he would’ve been a UFA this summer. LAL would’ve had an extra year of him at 6.8M, AND could’ve offered him up to 4/54 or something in that ballpark. Or like 2/25M whatever. Bizarre to me they let him go sign elsewhere for the min tbh, he’d be a decent bench guy and surely he would’ve stayed for like 2y/6M with a player option…& they’d have early bird rights if he did well. Pelinka is p bad tho and LAL is cheap.

Kispert is a beast in my 10 year rebuilds I do, gotta sign him when you can, he’s cheap too. Plus not keeping Jaden Hardy is always a bad idea
