    Great idea and excellent video, thanks for making and sharing this! I think the colored electrical tape is a nice way to ease into classifying one’s locks, and agree the $700+ is cost prohibitive for the vast majority of folks. Have you considered selling a $10 PDF with *instructions* for how someone can assemble their own Dojo, with exact working links of exactly who to order from, what modifications need to be made, etc.? You could make a little $ for your efforts, help the community, and sure people could “pirate” the ebook/PDF but at only $10 why bother, just give Sandman something for his trouble and feel like a good person instead of a jerk 😊

    I think it's a cool idea.
    Some ideas:
    1. It would be nice to have something written on the lock itself that defines it as a training lock.
    2. It would be nice if it would be possible to open the lock by turning the cylinder in both directions, so it be possible to practice both.
    3. It would be nice if you could buy each color of lock separately from the other locks, and then you could choose from several types of cylinders the one you want. It will also help the locks companies, because they will have another market to sell to, so they give the cylinders for less.

    Merry Christmas, Sandman. Hoping you're well with your partner and family this festive season.
    I remember when you first proposed the idea to me and a few other people -- you were looking for some locks that would come in a KIK system and would go through the ranks. I'm so happy that the project finished, but unfortunately as speculated, it is at such a magnitude that the price just cannot be justified. I think the biggest issue is the lack of lock bodies which can house given lock types, which severely reduces the choice of lock, thus increasing the price as other, more economic options, are unavailable (think the MIWA U9, black belt lock from Japan, 10 bucks each or thereabouts).
    At the same time, maybe it's for the best. They would be a big investment even if everything here was halved in price. That sort of thing is a big commitment for a newbie. Either way, I'm sure plenty of people (myself included) will be taking inspiration from this idea. Maybe there will even be a machinist who makes universal lock bodies for the major types of cores (KIK, euro, oval, australian standard) with matching adapters. That would be cool.
    Have a happy holidays, mate. Love your work.

    Very nice review! The lock classification group list you presented is quite dated. Locks are currently ranked by all black belt members and a select few other members on a spreadsheet, once there is a decent number of rankings in for a particular lock, the locks in question are presented to the lock classification council (Peaceweapon does an excellent job with all the logistics on this). Traditionally, we would have CorrectJeans decide on all classifications and present the belt change list, however Peaceweapon now presents it based on the council approving or denying the rankings presented from the lock classification group. The council was changed from just CorrectJeans to include Rein and GravityKarma, and eventually expanded to including a few additional LPU mods.

    As a former martial artist I like that the belt system gets harder as you go up, and teaching is part of the higher belts. In order to get your belts you also need to source all the locks, kinda like building your lightsaber before you can become a Jedi Master. lol If I was to buy a lock set, the locks would all have to be the same size. OCD is killing me looking at the smaller locks in the line up.

    • @sandman_locksport

      Pac Lock said they could give me all same size, but I would have to buy in bulk, minimum quantity order. Since I was just buying one of each color, they were only able to give me what they had on hand. This was just meant to be a proof of concept and prototype.

    If you put together belt packages, like a kit with everything you need to attain that rank...... I personally have had many issues tracking down locks for advancement that are not sfic's. Like 2 locks of each type required, a booklet of tips and instructions for challenge locks, pin creation, pick making, etc. and have a tool option like tensioners and picks needed for the keyways of the locks in the package

    I suppose it would be more practical to have just the first 6 belts just as cylinders, cos thats what youll be practicing your picking on, but have a printed jig to put them in to have them in a daisywheel. The other four are very specialist and probably better to get them individually in the vintage market, or from locksmiths.

      The Master LOTO lox can be very difficult. If you have 10 of them, 8 of them will be extremely difficult, and 2 will be a wash. They’re not meant for hardened security, they are just meant for reminding someone to observe an element and proceed with caution in a specific process whilst removing the padlock. I think what makes them so difficult is the lack of precision manufacturing.

    This might be a stupid question, for that I'm sorry. On the clk website, which type of Kik cylinders are we looking for? For instance, the yellow SC1 has 1 for patio doors, 1 for Sargent locks, and 2 for deadbolt, 1 US4, and 1 US26D. What one would be best for the paclock and do you just snip off that little tail bit and slide it in? I don't think I'm even a white belt with these questions lol.

    If it's possible, as this would be for collection and practice purposes, replacing as much of the bodies with 3D printing and assembling a kit for the core and remaining components might be more affordable. Or possibly a universal body of sorts with custom painted/sleeved cores (sleeves for core tolerances, possibly) and adapters to fit the body. In that second case there could just be one body to be accounted for, with a limited number of smaller adapters, all of which could be metal again. Some companies offer metal 3D printing, as well, so early orders could be made to print other than ordering the cores. (Do any of these shown locks have unique security features in the bodies that couldn't be overcome with an adapter to seat them?)

      White belt, because raking is only allowed at white belt. Even if it’s an orange belt level lock. But good on you for making your own pick, and for slaying locks. But there is no skill in raking, that’s why it’s only allowed at white belt.

      @sandman_locksport  Před 3 měsíci

      @@Cris-ih3jx there is a skill in raking, it’s just very minimal. Be proud of that skill. But you can’t rake a high security lock. That’s why security pens were designed in the first place to thwart raking and bumping. You have to be able to single pin pick those. I can teach anybody how to rake a lock, and under one minute. It’s a very low level skill used on low level locks with loose tolerances

  • @TequilaDave
    @TequilaDave Před 5 měsíci +1

    Although I do love the karate belt system for ranking locks sometimes you can get a real easy or difficult lock which doesn't fit. For example I've picked an MT5+ which had a ridiculously easy sidebar. I've picked locks ranked above what I would rate myself according to the system, some because I've progressively pinned them or they were just easy ones.
    Personally I think you should rank youself as to what you can consistently pick, ie get a bunch of the same locks and see how many you can get open.
    I do love the idea of having a whole coloured set of padlocks but being a UK picker the white to blue choice would be different, probably more Abus and Squire etc.

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  Před 5 měsíci +2

      I don’t disagree, it’s just a loose guide. I have a couple green belt locks that I haven’t picked yet. I have purple belt locks that I can open in under two minutes. But they make up a very small percentage of the rest of my collection, I own over 300 locks, so I love using the system to classify them. I feel that it is nearly perfect. But it will never be perfect. Every Lock is different.

      @@tylerwine1962 I just realized I used a normal KIK for brown belt, because I have a Primus in there. I have two Pac Locks in brown. One for my primus, and one for an interchangeable core, which is a different size.

    24:57 Dang, I'm purple as well, have a respectable collection (a couple Medeco's, MTL Interactive, EVVA 3KS, Goal D9, Paclock, American, etc.), and have absolutely no idea what sleeved and non-sleeved is. I tried to look it up, but I'm not having any luck finding information. Not trying to criticize the criticism, but I'm genuinely interested in what the heck you're referring to. I do locksmithing work down here in Chile, so I'll recognize there's a possibility that I just don't know the word in English

      Ruko 500 locks, I believe they are made in Denmark or Sweden. They have a sleeve similar to an interchange before. Ruko 600 don’t have a sleeve. I picked a Ruko 500 on my Instagram. They are listed on the lpubelts.com site as well. Thanks for watching.

    Do the American 1100 series locks have the ability to swap the cores for this purpose?

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  Před měsícem

      No. The 1100 cores are too small. So the lock is too small

    If it was “certified” or approved by the sub Reddit I’d definitely buy this

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  Před 3 měsíci

      Why would I need their approval to buy the locks that they have already approved on their list and assemble them together in a row for my collection or to sell? you’re telling me you would rather prefer to just buy these individual leave from nine different sellers? That’s weird. That doesn’t make sense. Also they have a creative common copyright, which means as long as you just mention them that they invented the system then you can do whatever you want with it.

    Hey Sandman, just started watching your stuff because I only started a month and a half ago haha. I'm up to orange rank now and would be wondering if I could "rent" that set. I'll pay you and send it back after a set amount of time, that you decide. Let me know!

      @sandman_locksport  Před 3 měsíci

      Congratulations on your orange belt! Many locks will be slayed by you I'm sure. I will not be renting or loaning anything from my collection to anyone ever. 15 years in this hobby has taught me that. Call pac lock and they will get you situated with the bodies you need, and a locksmith can get you settled with the locks. that's what i did.

    Seems this could be made cheaper by designing a plastic lock body that can hold these cylinders. or try to commonize lock bodies as much as possible, and sell the cylinders along with 1 or two lock bodies

      @sandman_locksport recently got my orange in the discord. I'm not experienced enough to say what it "should" be ranked at. But I do know that locks move up and down the rank system as the mods get feedback and more locks get added.
      Love the idea of progressive colored lock bodies. Would even be interested in funding a startup for the lock idea. Will definitely be borrowing the electrical tape idea.
