The most powerful woman you've never heard of | T. Morgan Dixon and Vanessa Garrison

  • Everyone's heard of Martin Luther King Jr. But do you know the woman Dr. King called "the architect of the civil rights movement," Septima Clark? The teacher of some of the generation's most legendary activists -- like Rosa Parks, Diane Nash, Fannie Lou Hamer and thousands more -- Clark laid out a blueprint for change-making that has stood the test of time. Now T. Morgan Dixon and Vanessa Garrison, the cofounders of GirlTrek, are taking a page from Clark's playbook to launch a health revolution in the US -- and get one million women walking for justice. (This ambitious idea is part of The Audacious Project, TED's initiative to inspire and fund global change.)

There is no blaming going on here, and I appreciate that. It calls for personal responsibility and changes within the community, so this gets a thumbs up from me.

      Totally agreed.
I honestly opened with a dislike... and I'm truly not hateful. The amount of videos like this, even especially from TED, that are just stuffed full of hate and vitriol masked as empowerment is truly depressing and almost a given at this point.
This was not one of those. Bravo to these wonderful women trying to empower and enrich people and not get mired in blame, and utter futile nonsense that gets fed to these movements. Shame some others didn't have the integrity to hear them out before mucking up the like ratio. Surely many of them were similarly jaded by the disgusting content that regularly comes through this and other mainstream channels.
Definitely beautiful seeing people really trying to rally themselves on the Left without all the derailing, celebrity-endorsed utter insanity.
I wish this type of honesty, love, and vitality could sweep over all types of people.
      Amazing work, ladies!

      Citizen = Slave.
Every person should consider what it's like to walk in the shoes of someone else within Society.
That is the only way that we will achieve balance.
People are not born in the United States with trees on their back or whips in their hands, but they are born into organizations where they either have badges or a stocking number.
My video on Independence points to finger at everybody in a fair manner without embellishing one group to shine more than the next.
      It is a personal responsibility.
it takes personal strengths no matter who you are to make change.

@LOCAL COPE thank you I always appreciate contrasting views because this is how I will learn and remain neutral.
In my personal experiences, the instant one would notice the word 'idiot' in your comment would become immediately defensive and start attacking you, getting away from the subject at hand.
It's obvious that these subjects are very emotional and rooted in what has impressed Upon Our threads since we arrived here as babies.
I always consider myself neutral in any political social or racist standing and mainly adhere to a category and labeled of 'Artist / Creator'.
My people have never been spoken for and are clearly used abuse and manipulated since the beginning of time, just as woman or people with varying physical characteristics have been.
Thank you for re commenting envying educated and motivated enough to read my comment fully.
it is always a gamble or risk having an opinion or taking a side today if necessary. this is another area that we are growing in overcoming things to make the changes we want to see and feel.
I would like to do one of these TED talks in the future based on my experiences and information which include even this activity for this comment that is helping me grow and learn.
      Thank you I appreciate it.

I know more than I want to know about narcissism. my husband was diagnosed with it, but I did not know the full impact of what that meant until...The love of my life, the only man I have ever loved and been married to for 38 years, decided he wanted to date while married. He went online and started dating up a storm without my consent or knowledge. That old Knucklehead does not even "have it like that" in the love department if you know what I mean. Well, to make a long story short and sweet, he moved in with one of the side-chicks in Georgia and I am here in California living my life like it is Golden. Every day, I wake up and I asked myself, "Martha, what wonderful thing will you do for yourself today?" God has let me know I don't have to understand all the foolishness and "carrying on" that happens in this earthly realm. Just keep moving, so I am moving my mind and body to a higher realm of joy walking with GirlTrek! I am now a GirlTrek crew leader. Thank you, Jesus!!!

Seeing the Trekers in the woods reminds me: to anyone out there for whom hiking in the woods is very new, make sure you remember to use tick repellant. Tuck the hems of your pants into your socks and do a quick tick check afterwards. Just being in nature for 20 minutes has proven health benefits like lowering your blood pressure, its so worthwhile....but dont forget to avoid those ticks.

If I organized a fat white women’s walk I would be in trouble and called prejudice. I find this ironic. Especially since I think of all women as my sisters. Black and white. And yet it’s okay to target get black women? I would never exclude black women from my talks so why do they exclude me? There are more more fat white women than black women. But I do understand their point. It just bothers me some because I wouldn’t aim any talk specifically to only white women. Black women would always be included. And there are plenty of socioeconomically challenged white women out there. More than black. However, neither are in the audience or listening to a TED Talk which is a shame.
