How The Last of Us's Fungal Invasion is Already Happening | The SCIENCE of...The Last of Us

- I actually happened upon a lot of this information totally by mistake. I didn't really have much to say about The Last of Us that hadn't already been said, but then I found out that the fungal invasion of our world is actually a thing that's already happening. It's really spooky stuff.

How freaking good is The Last of Us on HBO? Seriously. If you're not watching it, you should be. Episode 3 alone was probably one of the best episodes of television I've ever seen, only narrowly beaten out by the episode that revealed the White Ranger in The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers.
It's literally the game for the most part so that makes sense
Don't worry about the ranting, and asides. I missed them!
I didn't even play or watch TLOU lol.
Austin, don't overdo your expectations for next video pls
Dang, when I went to school I think they were still teaching there was only 5 kingdoms, but now 6 is borderline obsolete. Am I that old?
hey Austin what about crispr
Gotta love the "good" news that the "funguses" won't "directly" kill us.
it's fungi
@@lilyofluck371no you aren't

The science was the only reason I subbed to GT in the first place
Same
not the only reason I subbed, but certainly the only reason I stayed subbed post-fnaf
GT and Matt are sellouts..
Same as brian
Me too
I find it so funny that despite parting ways, Mat and Austin still wind up covering the same things within weeks of each other.
I mean, they probably still talk to each other.
The most recent science on this is so much scarier, it doesn’t attack the brain it just manipulates the body, meaning the host is conscious of what’s happening but is incapable of stopping it. I’m not sure how much research the crew did but wouldn’t it be the absolute most if they gave Frank MS (someone slowly losing control of there body over time as their mind stays relatively intact) as grim parallel.
Meh. Science lies
@B dubb lmao you know what channel this is right? The show is called because science!
Came to comments to mention this... the fungus penetrates the muscle cells and forcibly contracts them to make the thing move...
@@Zatchess because science is a different show run by Kyle hill that ended a few years ago as he left Nerdist media and now runs his own channel making similar content but with freedom to choose his won topic
This show is called THE SCIENCE! (with all the capitalisations)
@@bdubb5390 want to explain how? or are you just going to deny that its true that evidence suggests cordyceps doesn't effect the brain, but the muscle cells and forcibly makes it move
I think listening to Austin try to pronounce biology terms is my new favorite past time.
New drinking game, take a shot for every mispronounced term! You won’t have to worry about fungi anymore by the end of the video!

I love the "I am being informed by my writer, who is me." part XD
The infection in the show has supernatural qualities - from the speed of infection, to the vector, to how quickly the types of infected evolve. The show makes the infection look almost like a Grey-Goo scenario that has more in common with Horizon Zero Dawn
I once worked with an English teacher who would say the word Gemini as "gee-me-nee" and I couldn't believe my ears. A master's holding English teacher didn't know how to pronounce Gemini as if he has never heard the word before. Same here, I had always heard fungi pronounce "fun-guy", so I'm shocked to hear Austin pronounce it differently throughout the video.
It’s probably a _poe-tay-toe / poe-tah-toe_ sort of thing.
It's more of a toe-may-toe toe-mah-toe sort of thing.
Beatrix Potter the woman who wrote Peter rabbit also wrote papers about fungi, she wasn't allowed to present her work because women were not allowed in the scientific society.
She really deserves more credit than writing a children's book.
I wrote up a character that was a cordicep that high jacked an old truckers brain, trying to imagine what it would be like being one thing a moment ago, then suddenly get flushed with knowing how too operate an 18 wheeler, a desire to visit 7 separate husky waitresses, ect. It freaked out for a while. Contemplating a hospital visit, settled down a bit, used the waitresses to start a very secret family. But never brought out the end. Just stuck with being hidden and secret.
I had a dnd campaign where I played as a modified druid that was just constantly a mushroom, he spent most of the game having an existential crisis.
The Science has always been better than other theories. I was worried when your posting slowed over there, I'm glad you're sticking with it. Thanks Austin!

Wanted to take this rare opportunity to point out that orange has a rhyme contrary to popular myth. Orange with sporange. Sporange is a fungal structure.
So now you only have the more difficult task of writing a rhyming verse that ends with orange on one line and sporange on the other.
@@bvoyelr My favorite fungal structure is Sporange! I like it more than the color orange! 😎

my anxiety this week peaked during this video, please make more of it i just cant get enough of that existencial dread, love your vids💜
I swear, Austin can make anything interesting. If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be Austin
"Today were going to..Replace my kitchen sink"
[Us] "You S.o.b. im in"
Austin you are awesome having kept this show going through everything as long as you have. That being said thank you for my new reoccurring nightmares.
I still can't believe we will get these Videos regularily now.
I originally posted this on the Game Theorist sub reddit, but since ya've left them I figure I'll repost it here in the hopes that you see it.
"How Accurate ws Vault-Tec?"
This is an Idea for Austin cause I love The Science and I know he loves Fallout!
I realize that the Vaults in Fallout were taken to extremes, and any experiment that pushes its variables that far is doomed to fail. However, what if the experiments done were scaled back and designed with people that had empathy. What are the real world effects of "confinement," and would that variable cause significant change based on the tests?
I imagine this could maybe be a mini series where you look through the vault experiments list and compare with real world studies that tweaked similar variables, like how the vault in Fallout 1 has its water purifier breaking would signify "group loses resource at X period during test."
I dunno, seemed like a neat idea, and something Austin would give the best love too if it sparks his interest.
what I want is part two of the post-nuclear survival video. I want to know how to make pottery, not for some far flung survivalist fantasy, but to make crucibles, and have some heat resistant material to work with.
also potteries are pretty
The Japanese actually built a small scale model of Tokyo and released a slime mold into the city looking for food. Turns out the slime mold proved its sentient by actually making the subways more efficient when it moved outward.
I love your videos. I am so glad you’re doing better because I found my love for science by watching your videos back in high school. Every time I see you post I watch the video as soon as possible. Keep up the good work!
Your videos were my favorite part of GT. Very glad you’re still making them.
Very happy to see more stuff from Shoddycast, glad to have you back Austin!
That last part reminds me of antibiotics
Its often the case when given antibiotic for a virus, you will develop a yeast infection that must then also be treated
Of cause this was about 20 years ago, and things have since changed, but it really does show just how delicate your own body's ecosystem can be
I’m so glad your back Austin. I genuinely missed your presence on this platform. Glad you’re feeling better :)
I like your beginning rants in the ShoddyCast videos.
They’ve been one of my favorite parts.
WELCOME BACK ! I hadn't seen that channel was starting to live again! Its GREAT to hear your voice again and science ! YEAH!
"AcChuALly"
Cordyceps spreads not into the nervious system nor the brain, but the muscles themselves, it is thought infected ants are even conscious while the hyphea extends through their body, making the whole process a lot more terrifying.
Luckily, although cordyceps can infect a variety of arthropods, it only can "control" ants.
Great video as always.
Great video as always. Thank you for the video. Great way to start Saturday.
Welcome back austin. Missed you and hope you are doing well. In those quiet months i was worried.
I am so happy that you are making videos on this page again. Keep up the good work. Love you dude.
Always loved your style of videos. Shout out to all those that made this happen!
Realy loving the comeback that you're making in the new year
Always happy to see videos from you. Be well.
How Freaking GOOD is it Austin's back? Its a highlight of my year i love to hear and see
I just had to turn the notification bell on cause holy crap i didnt know you were back it is so great to hear you making a comeback i hope all is well family wise and here's to hoping this might be a true return to times of yore
wow ive not heard that intro since the math behind genji's bullet deflection
I'm so glad to see you posting ❤️
Always good to be surprised with a shoddycast video thanks man
This popped up in my feed, and I was like, "wow this guy is ripping off Austin's thumbnail design what a dush!..." So I click on it, turns out it was you. Good vid, I thought it had been a while since I've seen you upload on there. I miss when it was a group channel. I loved the science, the film analysis, the Japanese lore, and all the other variety. Glad I can still find your content!
Yay Austin video can't wait to make dinner and enjoy it -> this is some gross stuff but its a video game its fine -> why is there 8min left ? -> we are all going to die -> we are going to die but not yet
This Ladies and Gentleman is how an average Austion video looks and I am addicted
How did I not know THE SCIENCE!!! is back?!?!
genuinely my favorite videos series on CZcams, I learn stuff and the 'pandantic' (is that the right word? What ever, don't care) nature of it makes me laugh my butt off. thank you for making more!
Pedantic ❤
So happy to see you back! Always happy for more Science!
Is Austin's show on game theory canceled or something... Haven't been watching them lately...
i absolutely love the science and i'm so very ecstatic that hes uploading on shoddycast again lol.
^_^
God I hope you do the Control video next. Hearing about Psychology and one of my favorite games of all time was amazing. I don’t know how many times I’ve listened to that video at work but it’s fantastic
Thanks man I'm glad u found that passion again.
Huge credit for being clear "this cant happen" because I've seen so many that mention the ant thing and go "see it can totally happen" because that misinformation gets more engagement but you kept it realistic and honest. Even though it would have been easy to technically not lie by just leaving out the bit about human brains being too complex for it to have this effect on us
Gotta love seeing Austin learn from his time with GT. I honestly am so excited to see where Austin takes the channel I was subbed before he went over and damn it I will support this man!
Whatever Austim is huffing to make him do science vids again, KEEP IT UP!
Actually I kinda stopped watching Shoddy Cast after Austins Rants went away. I was kinda a casual viewer but I've watched THE SCIENCE with austin multiple times. It's good seeing him around again.
Sad to see him censor himself.
Love you Austin, keep the good content going.
Bro thank you so much for listening to feedback and not wasting our time at the beginning of the video 🙏
Sounds like fungi are a bit of a planetary reset system. Life thrives, leading to temperatures getting cooler, leading to fungal blooms, leading to extinction events, leading to a warming temperature, leading to a recession of fungus, leading to a thriving of life.
My favorite part of every week is hearing Hi it's me Austin.
Dear Austin, I know you've been through the wringer trying to get where you are. But I want you to know your rants set to classical music and filled with equal amounts of science and profanity are truly a joy to behold. Love ya man, keep it up.
I concur
How freaking good is it to have Austin back ^^
when Austin said "I am just yelling in the booth" he is my spirit animal 🤣🤣😂😂
So happy to have you back here. Let THE SCIENCE continue.
Loving your work :)
Love your show keep it up!
every time I hear you say even the mildest of good things that is going on in your life makes me smile, hope Mrs Austin and mini Austin are doing well too!
As soon as the music started and the dear naughty dog popped up. I couldn't help but smile. Time for an Austin original
The patrons are real homies here.
They kept both Austin and this show alive !!
Is so good to have you back
Fucking hell, you've been missed my friend, all my love from Amsterdam ♥️ Awaiting your next project patiently
fungi are so terrifying but fascinating lol Awesome vid, loved it ❤
I've always wanted to know more about how they deal with the fungus. Every time someone tried explaining... it gave me a splitting headache.
Love your videos. Thanks for the educating entertainment.
Austin THANK YOU for taking subjects you can't discuss on MatPat's channel to ShoddyCast! So glad I kept my subscription to this channel hoping for exclusive content away from your uploads to the "other" channel. I say "other" cus I only really watch your videos on Game Theory lol.
I love to see The Science On this channel once again!
I wanted to contain my enthusiasm for the return of the original SCIENCE man, in case of gotchas, but I shall now go nuts and shout his return from the mountaintops
I'm so fucking glad to come back and find the science back! I loved the old stuff and wasn't as massive of a fan as the Game Theory version of Austin's videos. it's so amazing to have the official vibes of The Science back!!!
Welcome back good sir!!!!
The beginning was a little rough and all over the place but you did a great job after the mid point. 👍
Dear ShoddyCast/Austin
Hello I'm here today for multiple reason first to say thank you for continuing to make a wonderful series. Second, to recommend an idea. I'm a college student studying for marine biology but I love animals in general though and love Pokémon. A idea I had in mind came form the most resent series of from sun and moon-scarlet and violet. The idea mainly being involving ecology of how Pokémon interact with each other and the environment and the other being adaptations and evolution made from the interaction. This can be done with reginal variants, paradox forms, and convergent evolution. With some pokedex entries you might be able to make a food webs or top down to bottom up interactions for whole regions . Last being hey I would like to work for or with you if possible. thank yo again and I hope you have a nice day
Sincerely Lewis
We need an "Ant's Life" x "The Last of Us" crossover movie
What's really funny is that there's a fungal infection that affects corn, what's ironic though is that many people believe is fungal infection ruins corn but actually it's entirely edible and is considered a delicacy by some. While there is a risk of fungus hitting our food supply is also a chance that it could improve it
More fungus in the soil can be beneficial for propagating plant nutrition. Some farmers generally try to keep a Bacteria/Fungal balance in the soil to keep weeds from being the only plant growing.
I worked at a farm where we had a process to rejuvenate the pastures with cows by having them knock down weeds and fertilize the soil.
Austin! Please upload that RDR 2 video about tuberculosis. It was great information to have and a great video about the disease.
As an aspiring writer your videos are so freaking helpful. Thank you!
So is the show version of Cordyceps actually a fungus? It spreads by tendrils, but your definition of fungus said it had to spread via spores to be classed that way.
I’m the game they use spores, probably only chose to change it for tv to not have the actors wear masks
Fum fact: funghi where the first to inhabit the land coupled with some bush like plants there where no trees yet but you would see meters high mushrooms standing tall everywhere (they where just long stalks basically no cap on them) and small bushes not higher then your waist surrounding them. This is years before the first animal would come to land .
So the thing about that "Ant Fungi" is that the actual zombie fungus DOES indeed go after other insects. Not the ant form but the spider form or other forms that do indeed attack many other insects.
Cordyceps have numerous versions for the many ants in the world but there are other forms that infect spiders, wasps, butterflies, even just flies.
So us not being ants does not truly free us from the chance. There are a lot of versions out there.
i love your opening bits i dont see the reason to cut them back
Damn I missed your videos. Finally a new vidoe
Ight boys and girls time to support our local science nerd! This man legit made me like science! I’ll follow ya anywhere Austin! Except maybe to the bathroom
Honestly I kind of feel like death by fungus would be one of the sickest ways to go out. Like as a choice between the non-noble death methods I might choose that one. That's one reason this is my youtube name.
Thank you for getting on with it - cause ive heard Far, Far too many people regurgitate "how good it is" im pretty sure i would hate the show just in spite of
8:55 missing a little bit of context: the ants don't just "climb and climb", they seek out the lowest branches' lowest leaves, and typically on branches facing north.
Great work
So happy to see The SCIENCE! Is back
Is his show on game theory cancelled? I haven't been catching up on those channels
Thanks for covering this! I was wondering about this exact question. Your show continues to be excellent!
I really miss my weekly dose of Steve strength, hope you reupload it soon.
Austin I have a suggestion for a science mini video. The SCIENCE behind the fat man launcher and if it would be feasible given what we found out in your video about mini nukes.
Thanks Austin, can't wait to think about this every time I take a shower
See...all the things the algorithm forces you to change are things I love. I loved your old expletive breakdowns and loved the ranting and the rambling at the beginning😅
I spent a good 5 minutes going "huh???? what the fuck is the Chromista Kingdom?" and spent that time trying to figure it out. I was NOT aware that they split the protista kingdom in such a way.
HOLY SHIT HES ALIVE I HAVENT SEEN YOUR VIDEOS IN MONTHS
